Hello to the elves and their elving assistants.
The Dec 20 Stew is Full On Christmas.
Hour one is dedicated to the memory of and a couple of lifelong friendships with one of our own, Monica Miller.
I would like to dedicate my hour of the Christmas Stew to my forever friend, Monica Miller, who passed in 2019 and who had a long-running radio program on CKUA. We met while we were both going through treatment for breast cancer in the 90s, and oddly, we never talked about or listened to music in our three decades together. Instead, we took the time to spend time together. We kayaked, rode horses in the back country, hiked mountain trails, talked about life, death, our children, our families and everything in between.
Christmas is a special time for me. Time slows, and though festive, it’s a time to reflect on this season of dormancy and to be fully present in its stillness. It’s a time to be grateful for those we hold close, for those who we can no longer hold, and to fully embrace the joy of the little ones, if we’re fortunate enough to be in their company.
Lots of tunes came to mind, and suggestions were exchanged.
Hour Two is a collection of two separate communities.
For many years, starting with CBC Radio, I was honoured to host a Christmas Show featuring guest artists.
One of those artists was a rocking young bullet named Bim. Later, he used his real name, Roy Forbes.
Shari Ulrich was also part of the guest list, along with Valdy and Colleen Peterson.
Roy and Shari have continued to help me honour that first Christmas show and its late producer/creator, Susan Englebert.
The second version of that Christmas special was called Christmas in the Round (Roundhouse Radio in East Vancouver)
Over three years, in story and song, it featured Barney Bentall, Craig Northey, Shari Ulrich, Roy Forbes, Jim Byrnes, Shaun Verreault and many more.
Then the whole shebang arrived last Christmas on Mulligan Stew at CKUA with guests
