Not only did Daenna van Mulligen head for Portugal to tour their top wine regions, she was also asked to be the keynote speaker at their annual wine gathering.
It’s the second time in 6 years that  she’s been there.
We both acknowledge their winemaking skills..with some varietals not seen anywhere else.
We also wonder why the curious wine fan hasn’t yet discovered Portuguese wines, en masse!
Because they are SO good and cheap. It’s the combination everyone’s looking for.

This Italian Tasting tour across Canada is one of the most popular every year..and why not.
Canada loves Italian food and wine..considering they helped build  this country, it makes perfect sense.
The first historical references to Gabbiano date from the 11th century, when work began on the square tower, which was built to defend one of the most important communication routes between Florence and Siena.
In the land survey presented by Tommaso Soderini in 1464 to the ‘Officials’ of the Land Registry of the Republic of Florence, it was noted that wine and oil were the most highly prized produce of the estate.
Mr Soderini, who owned the Castle was the man who commissioned the creating of The Statue of David.

As you might surmise..these guys have been making wine a looooong time.
Ivano Reali oversees these  historic vineyards in the very heart of Chianti.
Amazingly he’s a very down to Earth and charming as Italy itself.
He was pouring 5 of his best wines but we both seemed fixed on the amazing Chianti Classico  DOCG Gran Selezione Bellezza (Bell-Ayeza)

Winemaker Jonathan Maltus is the first Englishman in Bordeaux to win a perfect score from the influential critic Robert Parker. His label is Chateau Teyssier.

The amazing Le Dome wines come from these vineyards. He also has a crazy good winery in Napa called World’s End, featuring wines called     Against the Wind If 6 was 9 Wave Length Good Times. Bad Times Crossfire Jonathan Maltus is often referred to, variously, as a “cult winemaker” or “garagiste,” a kind of renegade Bordeaux winemaker who produces so-called “vins de garage,’ or “garage wine.

In March of this year I was pleased to accept an offer from Wines of New Zealand to tour various  regions with an emphasis on their sustainability programs.
We hope you had a chance to listen to the first three specials..they can be found on www.tastingroomradio.com.

And so we arrive at NEW ZEALAND SPECIAL #4…(imagine that line with a lot of echo)
After flying into Queenstown on the South Island we head for Central Otago.
The region is famous for their world class Pinot Noir but there are other varietals and other stories waiting to be told.
8 RANGES
 We start at 8 Ranges between Alexandra and Clyde.  If you are a touring by bike enthusiast..and love your wine..you’ve just found Nirv8 Ranges Wines are crafted by  French winemakers from grapes grown on  “Certified Sustainable” Tussock Ridge Vineyard, which was established in 2001 by Mark Borrie and Trevor Deaker.

For many years, Mark and Trevor have had a passion and enthusiasm for fine wines – and for the Central Otago landscape.
These have been the motivations for the establishment of 8 Ranges Wines.  The aim is to always produce wines of distinction and excellence which express the local terroir.
Tussock Ridge is a boutique vineyard of less than 3 Ha, situated on the edge of a high terrace in the middle of the Alexandra Basin amidst spectacular mountains in the Central Otago region of New Zealand.
The vineyard overlooks the Clutha River between Alexandra and Clyde, and is located just above the Central Otago Rail Trail.
There are panoramic views of the many surrounding mountain ranges from which our name and inspiration are derived:

8 Ranges Wines is a boutique brand established in 2001. All grapes are estate-grown and hand-picked from their Tussock Ridge Vineyard. This certified sustainable boutique vineyard is located high on a rocky, gravel terrace overlooking the Alexandra Basin of Central Otago. The uninterrupted views of 8 Ranges of mountains inspired the name.
The many award-winning wines exhibit the skills and experience of talented french winemakers Anthony Worch (vintages 2006 to 2009) and Lucie Lawrence (2010+).
The Pinot Noirs are Burgundian in style.
Beyond all that well meaning information..what I really liked about 8 Ranges were the people themselves.
Mark Borrie and Trevor Deaker have a quiet confidence about their vineyards and their wines and so they should.
They passed our tasting with flying colours..
Surprisingly they do not have Canadian representation. This too shall change.
The boys make a beautiful  Rosé, Pinot Gris, Trail Rider and Barrel Selection Pinot Noir so well!

In 2010 Felton Road was designated a Grand Cru winery of New Zealand. This Grand Cru status, currently only held by two other wineries (including Ata Rangi), recognizes the premier producers of Pinot Noir in New Zealand.
Winemaker Blair Walter is a master of less is more, Pinots are unfined and unfiltered and challenge the very best the world has to offer.
Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality.

Bannockburn, home to Carrick wines is found deep in the southern interior of the South Island of New Zealand in the wine region of Central Otago.  Bannockburn enjoys a continental climate with low rainfall and high sunshine hours. The long cool autumns with their warm days and cool nights create ideal conditions for the production of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Other grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris also thrive in Central Otago’s microclimate.
Their winemaker, Francis Hutt, works closely with viticulturist Blair Deaker to make vineyard and winery decisions that will enhance the finished wines, as well as staying true to their organic values.

Francis joined Carrick in 2010 having decided that Central Otago was where he wanted to be. Being a thorough young man he decided that in order to make wine in Central Otago he needed to know the vineyard first so spent a year working with Blair, our viticulturist before being appointed as Carrick Winemaker in August 2011. He has a particular interest in organic and biodynamic growing of grapes and wine production, so was specially delighted to be the first Carrick winemaker when we were able to show the world our organic certification on our 2012 botttling

Originally a Cromwell boy but has been away for a significant time. Returned to Cromwell and Carrick from Villa Maria organic vineyards and has been instrumental in moving Carrick towards its organic status. Great with people, hens, dogs, vegetable gardens, phases of the moon, brews for our compost and of course vineyards.
 AND THAT’S THE LAST NZ WINERY..but we’re not quite done yet.

Daenna van Mulligen/The Wine Diva was once again honoured to be one of the judges at the 2014 InterVin International Wine Awards held in Niagara.
They judged close to  1350 wines from 16 countries. and the winner was from BC. John Skinner and Painted Rock 
They submitted their 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2010 Red Icon and 2011 .  They  all earned gold medals. Their 2010 Syrah and 2011 Red Icon were awarded silver medals, and honours went to their  2012 Chardonnay.
In any game that’s called “bringing the goods”..
So, we begin today’s show with Daenna’s reaction to the competition and some standout wines and then John joins us with his reaction to the breakthrough award.

and we meet Thomas Perrin… The famous French  iconic family winery on this show is Famille Perrin. Represented by the 5th generation Thomas Perrin
It is no coincidence Famille Perrin is the leading organic wine grower of the Southern Rhône Valley where they occupy the region’s best terroirs. Their values have given them a worldwide reputation for excellence: absolute respect for the soil, a commitment to manual methods and a deep belief that organic viticulture is the only way to express the true essence of the terroir. Moreover the combination of talents within the family ensures the continuation of their unique expertise. Nature and tradition are key to the Famille Perrin way and this approach has continued seamlessly over five generations.
In 1321, under the reign of Pope John XXII, four barrels were brought from the papal cellar in Avignon to be filled with wine in Châteauneuf. Subsequently, the Popes increased their vineyard holdings in the region and the papal wine gained in fame.
The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century.
In 1549 “Noble Pierre de Beaucastel” bought “a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet”.

In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holding. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978…
Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and François, sons of Jacques. But Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, who represent the fifth generation, are ready to pursue this fabulous family history.
Pouring for us today – in Vancouver – Thomas Perrin.
He brings with him the back story of this label and the family.
Thomas was part of the Perrin team that was personally chosen  to create Chateau Miravel Rose for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

The Blues are more often than not a blue collar gig, which make it only fitting that the second single from The Crooked Brothers, “Mean Mean Baby” was written on the job. “I wrote the song while on the clock at this old job I had, making deliveries around town,” says Darwin Baker. “Harmonica in one hand and steering wheel in the other. I got the idea after reading an interview with Winnipeg Blues legend Big Dave MacLean, where he was talking about how with the blues you can write a love song, it’s just gotta have a crooked angle to it.” Shot inside the log cabin where the track was recorded, the new video for “Mean Mean Baby” captures the honesty and intimacy of the track.
 
Available to stream courtesy of Exclaim!, The Crooked Brothers’ upcoming album, Thank You I’m Sorry, is folk music full of left turns. No strangers to wide open spaces, the brothers captured their album in both Winnipeg’s Private Ear Studio, a downtown warehouse recording studio, and a handmade log home in the country. The resulting sound closely reflects their live dynamics. Practically a Crooked Family Variety Act their concerts see banjos, mandolins, guitars, and more taking turns being juggled from brother to brother. Matt Foster’s unforgettably strange voice, inhuman and gravelly deep. Baker’s deft handling of the harmonica. Jesse Matas’ stories and poems turned lyrics. Slow Leaves is the recording name of Winnipeg’s Grant Davidson. He has garnered a reputation as much for his honest lyrics and stirring voice as his intimate stage performances and confessional story- telling. His country-tinged folk music is deeply rooted in the genuine and honest, rich in melody and sung from the heart of downtown.

There was a fire sale of wineries on the Naramata Bench a couple of years ago.
They were all owned at one time by Lang Vineyards.
One was called Soaring Eagle with a hand carved sign you couldn’t miss.
The Viticulturalist who helped plan the vineyard was Val Tait.
4 years later, she’s now the General Manager, Winemaker and Viticulturalist.
Canadian wine reviewers have taken notice of her unique blends which is why we’ll talk about

Now in its ninth year, the Game and Wild Mushroom Festival takes place October 15 to November 2 with three or four course prix fixe menus at La Buca and Pied a Terre, and daily chalkboard specials at Sardine Can and The Abbey.

Chef Andrey Durbach celebrates fall with special menus at all four restaurants featuring wild, local mushrooms, deliciously rich game meats, and other speciality foods.
“This is my favourite season to cook,” Durbach says. “It’s the best time of the year for mushrooms and it’s also traditionally hunting season. It’s a time of year we turn our attention to foods that are deeply satisfying.”
The fest is a chance to taste the rich, earthy flavours of freshly picked in-season mushrooms—including chanterelle, matsutake, porcini, and black trumpet—and rarely featured game such as red deer, wild boar, and elk.
For the first time, the newly opened The Abbey joins La Buca, Pied a Terre, and Sardine Can in the annual foragers’ and food lovers’ extravaganza, with each restaurant offering unique menu items and wines to accompany them.
It takes special wines to pair with these Fall flavours..Chef’s business partner Chris Stewart has fabulous wines to bring to the table..they’re earthy, beautifully textured and very memorable.
