It was the hill that saved River Cafe

A year ago The River Cafe on Prince’s Island in Calgary – on The flooded Bow River – was almost pushed under the water. They lost everything in storage including many  sensational bottles of wine. I headed back to Calgary this year and Prince’s Island Park  for my annual Mulligan Stew show at the Calgary Folk Festival. I’m pleased to say the wonderful River Cafe is back. Above water and thriving.
I set up my recorder at the far end of the bar and talked to Chef Andrew Winfield and Cellar Manager and Sommelier Bruce Soley.
Damn. It was nice to be back.  Love this place. [divider] The Lake

The Lake Quails Gate

In our Kelowna broadcast  we have a story that takes place at Quails Gate. Astrolabe Musik Theatre & Turning Point Ensemble , in collaboration with Westbank First Nation, proudly present the world premiere production of The Lake / n-ha-a-itk August 15-17 at Quails’ Gate Winery in Kelowna, BC, in a fully-integrated evening of historical Canadian opera and contemporary syilx culture. Composed in 1952 by Barbara Pentland, with libretto by Governor-General Award-winning poet Dorothy Livesay, the Canadian chamber opera is based on the true-life story of pioneer Susan Allison, who sighted Lake Okanagan’s famous creature, na-ha-a-itk (Ogopogo), one stormy autumn day in 1873.
Turning Point Ensemble, under the expert direction of stage director James Fagan Tait and music director Owen Underhill, is joined by an incredible cast including soprano Heather Pawsey as Susan Allison, Westbank First Nation elder/singer Delphine Derickson, bass baritone Angus Bell, tenor Brian Kwangmin Lee, mezzo-soprano Barbara Towell, and Westbank First Nation dancer Corrine Derickson, with Curatorial and Heritage Researcher Jordan Coble, and youth from Westbank First Nation.

hello

Feature albums this week…

James Brown

James_Brown-1Get On Up: The James Brown Story – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features studio and standout live versions of many of Brown’s top soul/funk hits—from his first, 1956’s “Please Please Please” to “Out Of Sight,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” “Try Me,” “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag,” “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” and “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine.” Also included are two previously unreleased concert recordings heard in the new film that is in theaters nationwide on August 1.
These live, spine-tingling performances of “Please Please Please” and “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” were recorded at the historic Fort Homer W. Hesterly Armory in Tampa, Florida on April 23, 1966.
In 1986, James Brown was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a charter member. A multiple GRAMMY Award winner, Brown was honored with the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992, and in 2003 he received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. Brown died on
Christmas Day 2006 at the age of 73.
Chadwick Boseman nails the JB personality..the young front runner and the crazy man at the end.
Eric Clapton and Friends
eric-clapton1Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians.  Cale’s influence on Clapton was profound, and his influence on many more of today’s artists cannot be overstated.   To honour JJ’s legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale scheduled to release on July 29, 2014.  With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single “Call Me The Breeze”.

John Mellencamp
John Mellencamp’s Trouble No More was released in June 2003, received with universal critical acclaim and a No. 1 debut on Billboard’s Blues chart. Featuring Mellencamp and his band’s spirited take on 11 American folk and blues classics, including Robert Johnson’s “Stones In My Passway,” Son House’s “Death Letter,” Woody Guthrie’s “Johnny Hart,” Willie Dixon’s “Down In The Bottom,” Lucinda Williams’ “Lafayette,” and several others, the album was recorded and mixed in just 17 days, capturing the sessions’ bounding energy.
A month after the release, Mellencamp performed this acclaimed studio album, Trouble No More, and four additional songs, including stripped‐down versions of Mellencamp’s “Small Town,” “Paper In Fire” and Pink Houses,” as well as Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” for a sold‐out audience at New York’s Town Hall.
The CD features the complete 15‐song concert, while the vinyl LP highlights 10 performances from the show, and both include a new essay by Bob Merlis.

Enjoy!!!!

After serious travelling  experiences, the two of them settled down and took teaching and nursing positions around Swift Current , Saskatchewan. Life settled and things were good until they met the Similkameen Valley in 2001. The desire to try something new, their love of wine and the beauty of the Similkameen convinced them to purchase a vineyard and move from Saskatchewan to the Similkameen Valley to try something new. Virginia and John have two sons Jack and Nate. They share their house with an affable retriever named Cooper and an enigmatic cat named Rosie. Orofino is a straw bale..solar powered winery. The wines are sensational. http://www.orofinovineyards.com/ [divider] Mark Filatow / Waterfront Bistro  With over twenty years of experience, Chef Mark Filatow has had the honour of working at some of BC’s top restaurants including the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino, Bishops and Diva at the Met in Vancouver and Fresco Restaurant (now known as RauDZ) in Kelowna before taking the reins at Waterfront Wines. Provence Rose was featured in BC Govt Liquor Stores, many of the labels are still to be found.
Provence, the beautiful region that sits at the scenic crossroads of southern France, the Italian Alps, and the Mediterranean, has long been an area of historical import and distinct culture.
Above all else, Provence is known as a producer of some of the finest food and wine France has to offer, with a cuisine that emphasizes healthful ingredients like olive oil, garlic, fresh vegetables, and bountiful Mediterranean seafood.
The other famous product of Provence is Rose.
Viktorija Todorovska is an author  and is a Chicago-based wine educator.
Francois Millo is the general director of the Provence Wine Council, an acclaimed French wine expert and photographer. He was born and raised in Provence, and has worked and travelled through the world.
Together they have released a book called Provence Food and Wine. The Art of Living.

Jon Favreau. Actor. Director. Chef.
Jon Favreau
Jon has released a very charming film called CHEF.
It’s about a chef who loses his high profile restaurant job in LA,  travels across the USA and in Miami  starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing  together his estranged family. From that point on it becomes a road film, driven by food and music.
Not a bad thing.
We know Jon from his work in the Indy film  Swingers  plus Elf and both Iron Man blockbusters but this small film allows him to touch on themes lost in the larger films.
Love, trust, family. Food.
Basic stuff.
We find Jon on the phone from Los Angeles.
Apologies for the phone connection. We cleaned it up as best we could.

The Benjamin Bridge vineyards are located in the heart of the Gaspereau Valley on the Bay of Fundy, where the cool climate bears an uncanny affinity with the Champagne region of France.  Their  experienced winemakers work in collaboration with international experts to produce world-class Méthode Classique sparkling wines and limited edition luxury wines.
The sparkling wines  display the hallmarks of classic prestige cuvées from Champagne, but with a Nova Scotia signature. “They are, without question, the best sparkling wines I have tasted in Canada,” says Tony Aspler, Canada’s most renowned wine authority. Their collection of wines  including perennial sell-out Nova 7, together with our sparkling wine program, have helped raise the profile of Nova Scotia terroir and its winemaking in Canada and internationally. Jean-Benoit Deslauriers Benjamin Bridge Head Winemaker Slowly but surely BB has moved its way across Canada, making disbelievers into converts..until just now they are settled in the West and ready to serve all of Canada. Jason Priestley and myself had the distinct pleasure of discovering the vineyard many years ago while shooting Year Two of HollywoodandVinesTV. It’s my pleasure to welcome back to TRR..Owner Gerry McConnell and Head winemaker Jean- Benoit Deslauriers. http://benjaminbridge.com/   [divider]

Chef Ned Bell On  Canada Day, Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver and YEW seafood + bar Executive Chef Ned Bell  set off on a challenge that could forever change the future of sustainable seafood in Canada.
Last year the always ambitious and greatly passionate Chef Bell launched Chefs for Oceans and cycled across Vancouver Island in support of healthy lakes, rivers and oceans; this year he’s taking on the entire country.
On July 1, 2014, Chef Bell  headed  out from St. John’s Newfoundland on the journey of his life as he plans to cycle across Canada, all in the name of sustainable seafood. This is what Ned wants us to be aware of … Ned Bell and two of his loves. “two billion people rely on the world’s oceans for their daily source of protein.” “We have overfished 90 per cent of the large ocean predators. We have to start paying attention to managing our wild fisheries better and looking towards aquaculture — sustainable, on-land aquaculture — as a way to feed nine billion people by 2050.” We find The Ned in Halifax.. http://vancouver.eater.com/archives/2014/07/10/chef-ned-bell-chefs-for-oceans-diary-week-3.php http://chefsforoceans.com/   [divider] The Sobo Cookbook. Recipes from the Tofino Restaurant at the end of the Canadian Road  The Sobo Cookbook and finally..to complete this show.. Not only one of our favourite chefs but also one of our favourite people..
Lisa Ahier from Sobo in Tofino.   The Sobo Cookbook includes more than 100 recipes from the  Tofino restaurant that got its start as a food truck. Sobo is short for Sophisticated Bohemian and its food is wildly popular with surfers and beach bums. Sobo is ground zero  with food and travel writers from across North America,  making the pilgrimage to what is literally the end of the road.
Sobo has since become a destination restaurant, having outgrown its food truck beginnings, with visitors making the pilgrimage to the west coast of Vancouver Island just to taste chef Lisa Ahier’s cooking–which is, to use Tofino slang, simply “killer”.
The restaurant’s menu focuses on locally-sourced, seasonally-inspired ingredients from family-owned producers.
The dishes are shaped by Lisa’s Tex Mex and Southwestern culinary roots, and her experience gained across several US states, including her stint as executive chef of Cibolo Creek Ranch in Texas. The Sobo Cookbook. Recipes from the Tofino Restaurant at the end of the Canadian Road includes the restaurant’s all-time favourite recipes–recipes that have fed surfers, hungry locals, curious visitors and die-hard foodies alike.
Andrew Morrison, from Scout Magazine,  co-wrote the book with Lisa. Together they’ve created one of the best cookbooks of the year.sobo.ca
