July 11th, 2015 – Garagiste!

hello

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner B

Garagiste North  – The small guys wine festival

The Show

GAR-aH-Jeest NOrTH…

the coolest wine festival ever

Garagiste-poster-2015

Garagiste-poster-2015

What is a garagiste? (gar-ah-jeest).  It started out in France (of course) where it was a derogatory phrase for those avante garde and crazy mavericks making wine in their garage and outside the highly regulated system. Gradually and grudgingly came the acknowledgement that something really interesting was happening with these small case lot artisan wines, and a movement was born.

Anarchist. River Stone. SEVEN DIRECTIONS. NAGGING DOUBT. CoRCeleTTes. Roche. SynCHROmesh. Kraze Legz/Skaha  ROCHE. Niche.

Couldn’t fit everyone in but we are committed to bringing you all these stories over the course of the year.

They are all driven, passionate winemakers who qualify by producing under 2000 cases a year and use only BC Fruit.

Small they may be but these wineries have an effect on the future of BC wines.

They take the time and commitment to grow different varietals, use experimental methods and take chances in the cellar that few others would or could. When you find one you like it’s best to buy and hold because all productions are small.

Our guests are:

Terry Lynn Meyer – Organizer and pouring Anarchist Mountain

One of the smallest wineries with the biggest view.  Anarchist is owned by Andrew Stone and Terry Meyer Stone and sits overlooking Lake Osoyoos on Anarchist Mountain.  At an elevation of 1700 ft, their micro terroir brings cool evening temperatures and some of the longest degree days in the valley to their small case lot production of old vine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

www.anarchistvineyard.com

Ted Kane  – River Stone

River Stone is a small, family owned and operated vineyard and winery near Oliver. Winemaker, owner and garagiste Ted Kane started making wine when he was 18. He and his wife Lorraine moved to Oliver to fulfill his long held dream to grow Bordeaux red varietals and one day own their own winery. Check out their two Bordeaux blends: Stones Throw and Corner Stone and for the white lovers don’t miss out on Splash!

www.riverstoneestatewinery.ca

Rob Westbury – Winemaker Nagging Doubt

Nagging Doubt is a small artisan winery located in South East Kelowna on a 5.8 acre vineyard. Winemakers Rob Westbury and Mark Simpson create the wines by hand using a combination of modern and centuries old techniques to produce unique small case lot wines. Not to miss is their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and red blend–The Pull.

Gerry Thygesen – Co-Owner and winemaker of Skaha/KrazyLegz

Gerry and Sue Thygessen are the Proprietors of a beautiful vineyard above Skaha Lake in Kaleden. Steep slopes of shale and fossilized sandstone with lake influences encourage the vines to concentrate flavours in the ripening fruit resulting in elegant, well-balanced fruit forward wines.  For this pour Gerry is talking about his Skaha Wines.

 www.krazelegz.com

Daniel Bontorin – Seven Directions. Rose` Specialist

Daniel was the winemaker at Le Vieux Pin before be departed to consult and make his own rose.

With a total case production of 375 cases, this Small Guy virtual winery has a big heart.

There’s no winery to visit, which makes the opportunity to sample in person rare.  Daniel remarks that you can buy his Rose at Volcanic Hills, West Kelowna .  Specializing in single vineyard, single variety Rose wines, Daniel Bontorin and Kritine Witkowski use 100% BC grapes, are 100% VQA and 100% cool.  They  have made  their 2013 Zweigelt Rosé and 2014 Pinot Noir Rosé with two more new roses coming.

Dylan Roche – co-winemaker/co-owner  Roche

Dylan and Penelope Roche relocated from Bordeaux in 2011. Penelope was Director and Winemaker at her family’s Grand Cru Chateau in Bordeaux before coming to Canada. Dylan studied in Burgundy and apprenticed in Burgundy and New Zealand before Bordeaux and the Okanagan. With this prestigious background they still say farming is their priority, they make the wine from the fruit they farm. They make exceptional Pinot Gris, Rose and Pinot Noir. All I can say is “wow” – Find them. Buy them! Want to taste where Canadian wine may be headed? Start right here!!

James Schlosser – co-owner and winemaker  Niche

James Schlosser of Niche Wine Co of West Kelowna poured at the Small Guys Wine Fest. James and Joanna Schlosser call themselves ‘ farmers who love making (and drinking) wine’. They harvest grapes from small batch crops and their wines benefit from gravity, smarts and a few strong hands. They are passionate about Pinot Noir but also big fans of Gewürztraminer, Rose and Marechal Foch.

Alan Dickinson – Winemaker  Synchromesh Wines

 Synchromesh

A small family run operation in Okanagan Falls focused on terroir driven, world class Riesling, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. Alan and Amy Dickenson have quickly been carving a name for themselves. They approach their whole business with a holistic philosophy and minimal intervention to produce fabulous wines.

Mulligan Stew July 4th 2015- Tay Strathairn/Dawes Interview

hello

Dawes
TwitterFollow on twitter
The title of Dawes’ fourth album refers to one of the sweetest lyrics you’ll hear this year: “May all your favorite bands stay together,” Taylor Goldsmith sings in an affectionate farewell to an old pal. The title could also allude to the way Dawes continue to unapologetically evoke the earnest romanticism and skyward harmonies of classic 1970s Laurel Canyon rock. (In another nod to rock history, the title song has some “Let It Be” piano.) But on their strongest record since their 2009 debut, they inject a brooding guitar jam (“I Can’t Think About It Now”) and some of Goldsmith’s most sweet-and-sour lyrics (“Things Happen”). Rock’s thoughtful past has rarely sounded more vibrant. –Rolling Stone
taystrathairnThe planned shows take Dawes all over North America and Europe from June to October and include festival stops at Bonnaroo, Winnipeg Folk Festival and Xponential Music Festival, stops on Mumford & Sons’ Gentlemen of the Road Tour, dates supporting Hozier and My Morning Jacket. headlining theater and outdoor venue performances and more. Dawes will play alongside several support acts including Blake Mills, Langhorne Slim, The Lone Bellow, Gill Landry, Sam Outlaw, First Aid Kit, John Moreland and others.

hello

Tasting Room Radio B_BANNER2

THE SHOW

Here’s what I know…

Similkameen Valley

Similkameen Valley

The Similkameen is that spectacular valley in and around Keremeos and Cawston in Southern BC.

Many MANY wine fans drive right through on their way to Osoyoos and the rest of the Okanagan.

Albertans also do the same heading for the Coast.

The Point I’m trying to make is ..the wines out of this valley are some of the best anywhere in Canada.

Red Bridge

The next time you’re driving through Manning Park and then the Similkameen, take a half day and check out the wineries, cideries and fruit crafters below.

How good is the region?

There are a lot of BC wineries that would LOVE to get their hands on the fruit from the Similkameen.  It’s that good.

June 27th 2015- Four guys fishing!

hello

Tasting Room Radio B_BANNER2

Four guys..doing our 5th annual fishing trip!!!

Friends. Food, Fluids and  Fishing…

At the 7 ½ Diamond Ranch. North of Princeton BC

THE SHOW

Rhys. John and tdm

Rhys. John and tdm

Its a pretty basic show this week.. get together with my wine pals..always include a chef..and FISH YER BRAINS OUT!!

We return to the site of last year’s 4F..The fabulous 7 ½ Diamond Ranch North of Princeton BC.   www.guestranchbc.com

(do yourself a favour – and watch the short video. Be prepared to be wowed!)

Last year the  new bunkhouse wasn’t  quite ready, so we used that as a lame excuse to return –“ for the full experience.”

Yes, they have their own private lake..stocked with trophy  Kamloops trout, which can only be caught and released with barbless hooks.

Electric motors make sure the water quality is preserved.

It’s a small lake so you can stay in touch with those around you..watch the eagles do their foraging..ducks and their families, horses in the corrals and around the Ranch.

The Lake

The Lake

And we finally got to stay in the new bunkhouse..which is fact is a tricked out ocean going container..now covered inside and out in barn wood and really fine kitchens, stacked beds..with – wait for it – Flannel Sheets.

During the Summer  even though its hot during the day..at night it gets down to 10 degrees.

Showers and a really nice BIG front porch for just sitting and remembering the day.

Our guests are:

Justin O’Connor.

Our host and the son of owners Jim and Heather O’Connor!!

Justin is also the Vice President of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association in the Okanagan.   Justin  and his spouse and partner Christy Hughes also publish the award-winning Okanagan HOME Magazine.

He also represents Sotheby’s in the Okanagan

It was Justin who liked the idea of Tasting Room Radio spending a couple of days soaking up  ranch life , the fishing, the food and the wines.

Executive Chef Jeff van Geest –  Miradoro Restaurant at Tinhorn Creek  The  Golden Mile – South of Oliver BC

the singing chef

the singing chef

Chef Jeff Van Geest is one of British Columbia’s most celebrated chefs, focusing on locally procured foods from sustainable producer partners.

Jeff was born in St. Catharines, the heart of the Niagara region. His grandparents were farmers and taught him to respect what farm-fresh meant – which might explain Jeff’s desire to have a small garden on site at Miradoro, even if he doesn’t have time to tend it every day.

With his culinary training at the Vancouver Community College, Jeff landed an apprenticeship at Bishop’s restaurant in Vancouver – one of the earliest pioneers in sustainable cuisine. He worked his way through the ranks to Sous Chef before leaving to start his own restaurant: the Aurora Bistro. Highlighting field-to-table and honouring the farmer/chef relationship earned Jeff a reputation in the restaurant industry as someone who walked (or cooked) the talk.

After closing Aurora, Jeff accepted a position of Executive Sous Chef at Diva at the Met – another name on the who’s who list of British Columbia restaurants. Yet at every move in the culinary chain, thoughts of Jeff’s grandparent farmers stayed on his mind and the allure of rural living grew stronger. When Miradoro called in 2010, Jeff answered by moving his family to the Okanagan and the heart of British Columbia’s agricultural country.

Jeff cooked two great meals with meats supplied by Jason Pleym at Two Rivers Specialty Meats I North Vancouver.  Two Rivers is the go-to meat source in Western Canada.

Dinner

Dinner

Jason also included lots of their handmade specialty sausages, which were truly appreciated at breakfast, out on the water and as an appetizer for dinner.

Jeff is in the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame.  Plus, he’s an OK fisherman.  Not Hall of Fame material but maybe someday!!

John Weber – co-owner and winemaker at Orofino.  Similkameen Valley

JOHN AND VIRGINIA WEBER both grew up in Southern Saskatchewan far away from anything to do with grapes and the wine industry. The closest they ever got to wine production was the jugs of chokecherry wine John’s parents made in their basement. Virginia studied nursing and became a registered nurse and John received a Bachelor of Arts in English and then went on to finish an Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

The Orofino winery, Canada’s only straw bale winery was constructed in 2004/2005. The eco friendly design consists of two buildings adjoined by a breezeway.

Showtime

Six Similkameen vineyards currently supply Orofino, which made 5,200 cases in 2012. The winery’s own 5.5-acre vineyard includes blocks of five varietals planted in 1989, along with replacement blocks planted at various times since 1999. The latest addition, in 2010, was 0.6 acre of Petit Verdot.

John and Virginia are making exceptional wines in the Similkameen outside of Cawston, including Four Rieslings.

Love these guys!!

http://www.orofinovineyards.com/

Rhys Pender – Master of Wine. Co-Owner and winemaker at Little Farm. Cawston!!

John’s next door neighbour. Fishing partner  and wine fan.

A passionate educator, wine lover, judge, writer, and grape grower/farmer, Rhys has worked in the wine industry since he was a teenager, back in Australia. His interest in food and wine really peaked by travelling through Europe and then a summer spent immersed in food, wine and language in the South of France with Alishan

Rhys and Alishan moved to the Okanagan in 1999 to pursue the food and wine culture. In 2003 Rhys and Alishan started a catering company and Okanagan Grocery Artisan Breads, and Rhys started his Wine Plus+ business doing wine education, consulting, writing and judging. Rhys then took on the grueling Master of Wine all while running Okanagan Grocery and Wine Plus+ and with two baby daughters and one sleep deprived mother-baker in the house. Yes, they thought he was crazy.

Rhys

Rhys

This culminated in Rhys becoming Canada’s youngest Master of Wine (the wine world’s highest level of achievement) in 2010, one of only 300 in the world. Through his studies, Rhys knew every reason why they shouldn’t jump into the vineyard and winemaking dream but couldn’t help doing it anyway. Instead he used his training to design and plant the 4 acre Mulberry Tree Vineyard at the property Rhys and Alishan purchased in Cawston in 2008.

Rhys looks after the vineyard, farming it organically and sustainably, to produce intensely flavoured grapes from the calcium carbonate rich soils. Having studied the world of wine he brings a global perspective to the project and an understanding of the world’s wine regions and wine styles. He continues to run his Wine Plus+ business including a wine school, consultancy, writing for a number of publications and judging wine competitions around the world.

There is no category for master of fishing.

Little Farm Winery is the small hands-on operation of Rhys Pender MW and Alishan Driediger. It started with a passion for wine and developed into growing and producing Chardonnay and Riesling from their Mulberry Tree Vineyard at their home in Cawston, BC in the beautiful Similkameen Valley. The goal was always to make wines with minimal manipulation and intervention that really captured the vineyard site and the growing season. The vines were planted in 2009 on the calcium carbonate rich soil and braving the unforgiving Similkameen sun and wind. The first wines were made in 2011. In 2012 a dry Rosé was added to the lineup. Little Farm Winery will never be big and will always focus on making small batches of single-vineyard wine that reflect each site’s unique characteristics. The goal is to make interesting, character natural wines and look after their  little farm.

GUMBO…from Dr John

TwitterFollow on Twitter
GumboAfter over four years as The Night Tripper, Dr John returned to the music of his native city for his fifth album. Gumbo was a collection of covers of classic New Orleans tunes (including several Huey Smith songs), with Dr John leading a fantastic band consisting of keyboardist Ronnie Barron, bassist Jimmy Calhoun and drummer Fred Staehle, with horn arrangements from Harold Battiste. He himself called it “both a tribute to and my interpretation of the music I had grown up with in New Orleans in the 1940s and 1950s”.

It is often referred to as a corner-stone in New Orleans music.  Produced by the one and only Jerry Wexler
His version of “Iko Iko” managed to break into the Top 40, and it took him from being an underground cult musician to a widely-recognized authority on the music of the Big Easy. It also showcased his dazzling piano skills, which he had never really utilized that much as The Night Tripper (with a few exceptions).
Still today it is seen as one of the crowning achievements of his career.

harp and Axe play the Calgary stampede July 3 Rd at the Palomino and Aug 1 at the Calgary Blues Fest

With a name like the Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, you might be forgiven for thinking that the Vancouver-based duo is some sort of concept group, based on a hypothetical love story between Captain Ahab and Lizzie Borden.’
 Chris Oke, Yukon News

In reality, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn Telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a ‘decades-deep blues style’ (Scott Brown, What’s up Yukon), while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy.
The two met and bonded over music while recording a radio jingle. Their memorable name is inspired by a lyric from Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Bobby McGee’ that references the blues harp, (‘I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana’) and ‘axe’, a common term for the guitar.
Their influences range from the iconic songwriting of Willie Dixon to the boundary pushing of Jack White and Danger Mouse but their sound is distinctly their own, smothered in greasy, gritty soul and imbued with funk. Shawn Hall provides the rousing, rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic. It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky, summer night. It cuts you to the core. It’s the blues played the way it was meant to be played.

Lisa Fischer RAW Interview

Lisa Fischer is a singer who really gets around. Her life is an endless round of planes, trains, and automobiles, rehearsals and fittings. On tour with the Rolling Stones, Sting, Chris Botti or Nine Inch Nails, her name may not be on the marquee, but she doesn’t care. She’s busy loving every minute of it. It’s easy to see why she works all the time: her astonishing range, her spot-on intonation, her mastery of the stage, the way her tone wraps itself around your heart and won’t let go, the infectious quality of her time feel: these things keep her on top of the list. But it’s the sweetness of her smile, her visible pleasure in watching her bandmates do their stuff, her glamorous-girl-next-door quality that make fans all over the world think she’s their own secret discovery (despite the fact that the YouTube version of her duet with Mick Jagger on ‘Gimme Shelter’ has millions of hits).
The rest of her resume is pretty impressive too: touring, recording, and music making with Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, Alicia Keyes, Lou Reed, Louie Vega, Aretha Franklin, John Scofield, George Benson, Laurie Anderson, Lee Ritenour, Jackie Evancho (and many others). Along with many other top session and backup singers like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Patti Austin, and Judith Hill, “the greatest artists you’ve never heard of” (but whose voices are instantly recognizable), she’s featured in Morgan Neville’s Oscar and Grammy-winning 2013 documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom. In the wake of the movie’s critical and popular success, opportunities abound. Lisa’s been recruited for new studio projects including Billy Childs’ long-awaited Laura Nyro tribute. Lisa, Darlene, Merry, and Judith sang the National Anthem at the 2014 Rose Bowl. And Lisa’s putting together a brand new band to explore some uncharted territory. She’s on to a new leg of the journey, destination unknown.
When Lisa Fischer won her Grammy for Best Female R&B Performance for her hit single “How Can I Ease the Pain,” in an unlikely tie with Patti LaBelle, she almost missed the chance to take the stage and accept her award. Thrilled and amazed to get the nomination, Lisa heard Patti LaBelle’s name announced and started clapping so hard that she didn’t hear her own name called. Onstage, the two singers hugged and swayed together, caught up in the moment. Because Lisa Fischer didn’t just win a Grammy for her first solo single; she was also one of the backup singers on Ms. LaBelle’s award-winning song ‘Burnin.’
The first person Lisa thanked onstage that night was Luther Vandross. Lisa was a Marvellete when she first auditioned for Luther, who was to become her employer, her mentor, and her champion. She is honored to carry on his legacy, striving for excellence, taking care of business, getting up early, staying up late, showing up on time, letting the music take control, singing her heart out, night after night.
