Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew July 6th 2024-Welcome to The Summer Stew. The 2nd Annual Summer Festival Special

hello

It all started as a single interview about the Edmonton Folk Festival. We seemed to be talking about  the “other“ festivals and could they survive the Covid years.

That conversation turned into the first group interview with the artistic directors of Calgary, Winnipeg, Canmore and Vancouver Folk Festivals.

It was fun and informative, so we’ve decided to make it a yearly gathering.

Here’s the guest lineup this year. They each bring with them stories of the artists they booked and why.

Vancouver Island Music Festival

Doug Cox – July 12-14 Vancouver Island Music Festival (Courtney)

Chris Frayer – July 11-14  Winnipeg Folk Festival

Fiona Black – July 19-21 Vancouver Folk Festival

Kerry Clark – July 25-28 Calgary Folk Festival

Jenna Klein Waller – Aug 3-5 Canmore Folk Festival

Terry Wickham – Aug 8-11 Edmonton Folk Festival

Winnipeg Folk Music Festival

This week our interview guests are…

Artistic Directors of Vancouver Island Music Festival (Doug Cox) & Winnipeg Folk Festival (Chris Frayer)

Both festivals start next weekend.

Next Saturday it’s Fiona Black from Vancouver FF and Kerry Clark from Calgary FF.  Bringing insights into their artist guest list and special events.
The complete interviews can be seen on Mulligan Stew Podcast and the terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel

From those two feature interviews we’ll be playing the headliners they talked about. Bela Fleck, Milk Carton Kids, Leo Kottke, Lucinda Williams,  Daniel Lanois, The Cowboys Junkies, and The Fretless with Madeleine Roger.

Hey..there’s also the rest of The Summer Stew…

Two donors who each bring suggestions to the playlist. The Witts were thinking songs about July and summer hits from Tom Petty and Steve Winwood.

And the Browns simply wanted something from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s that they could dance to. The 40’s was always going to be tough until I remembered a Fats Domino song he released in 1949 that was fully rock and roll – 6 years ahead of Elvis.

July songs include Dave Alvin and Jimmy Dale Gilmore singing John Stewart’s July, you’re a Woman. The original King of July by Tom Taylor, Black day in July by Gord Lightfoot.

New music from Colin James, Lake Street Dive, The Radio Grande, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Live songs from Neil and Peggy Young singing Ian Tyson, and Mavis Staples.

Classics from Ben E King, Ray Charles, Sly Stone, Plant and Krauss, Bonnie Raitt and  Aretha are making history, and because The Beatles’ film   A Hard Days Night was first screened July 6 1964 to huge success, we’ll be playing You Can’t Do That!!

Welcome to The Summer Stews!!!

Mulligan Stew June 29th 2024-Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. Blue Rodeo and Jim Cuddy Band

hello

Had the wonderful opportunity to welcome back Greg and Jim.

Each is a force. Together it’s shots over the bow as long as the mics are on and the host is also a target.

I loved it.

We talked about 2025 and their 40th anniversary, reflections on Gordon Lightfoot and the Lightfoot concert at Massey Hall.

Being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

That’s in hour one.

Hour two it’s Jim Cuddy talking about his wonderful now now-released 6th solo album ‘All the World Fades Away;’.  Also engages on what it means to have a solo career outside of Blue Rodeo.

The whole conversation can be found on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and YouTube channel. (It’s worth it)

Two donors this week.

The first in Texas. Two Albertans connected to Canada by family and CKUA. Asking for The Hip Live in Texas, Joni, Cohen, Neil, Colin James. Remembering a just lost Father.

The second donor asking for Serena Ryder and Bahamas.    Beautiful!

hello

Both guests have albums coming out on Friday.
Celeigh Cardinal has her latest dropping Friday – Boundless Possibilities.
Personally written songs that describe the feelings of losing her son’s Father in a murder and the death of a friend by suicide.  Also surviving the pain and loss and changing her life forever.
It’s not your average album and certainly not your average interview. Open, bare and loving.
The second guest is Bridget Kearney—bassist, vocalist and songwriter for Lake Street Dive. The album is Good Together and after  20 years together, they’ve decided to write songs and create together in the same room. It shows in the exceptional songs.
They appeared this week on Colbert Show and they’re on tour. One of the dates is Madison Square Garden.
New music from Colin James and Charlie Musslewhite, Little Feat, Madeleine Peyroux, Honey Bear The Band, Walk off the Earth, Dan Mangan,  Robert Plant and Allison Krauss.
Donor asks for Sam Cooke live, Tedeschi Trucks, John Mellencamp, Funkadelic, John Hiatt, and Jackson Browne.

Mulligan Stew June 15th 2024- Donor Hours bring the Music

hello

Some weeks the hourly donors say – “I like what you do please just  keep doing it”

Many say “Here’s my 3 favourite artists/albums. If you can slide them in it would be great”

And then there comes the hour donor who’s speaking on behalf of an entire family remembering a lost member and because they are generational lifetime listeners to CKUA,  they really know their music. The whole hour becomes a celebration.

That’s what we have this week.

Really good music segments…usually with memories attached.

New music from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, a remake of When the Levee Breaks, a song Plant sang with Led Zep. Sue Foley, and The Tibbs who are from Holland but sound like Stax, Nathaniel Rateliff, Lake Street Dive, Willie Nelson, Donovan Woods &  Aysanabee.

Live tracks from Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne, Plant/Krauss, REM,.

Because I got found out by donor hour one  – An 80’s set from Police, Queen/Bowie & Cindy Lauper,

Classics from Tom Waits, Leon  Russell, Dylan, Stones, The Band (an outtake) Roy Orbison, Squeeze, JJ Cale, Van, John Lee Hooker and Ry Cooder.

Guests next week are

Celeigh Cardinal and Lake Street Dive. Both with just released albums.

In two weeks – Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy on the 2024 touring plans for Blue Rodeo, including Canmore and Edmonton Folk Fests. Being inducted into the Songwriters Hall, then Jim Cuddy takes us through his just-released album All the World Fades Away.

And finally – this note from hour two donor

The night that Darrel passed away, I asked him if I could get him anything.  I asked if he wanted a drink and he shook his head no.  I asked if he wanted another blanket and he shook his head no.  I asked if he wanted to listen to CKUA and he nodded yes.  That was the last music Darrel heard and it was good!

Mulligan Stew June 8th 2024- Boz Skaggs turns 80

hello

Let Me Count For You!!!

I  have two – TWO donors for the Stew.

The first,  in Edmonton, has listened for years.

He is usually fixing BMWs in his garage, while the love of his life creates in the kitchen where she shapes much-admired meals.

Said donor was turned on to CKUA, exactly like me, by listening to the great Bill Coull play Brubeck’s Take Five Saturdays on CKUA.

Our donor became a CKUA volunteer and worked in the library where he met the late great David Ward. They discovered they both had a passion for music and canoes and ended up canoeing lakes together.

I received  requests from the garage and the kitchen.

The second donor lives in Canmore.  The last time he donated an hour  he was as far south as you can get. The island of South Georgia where the southern cross can be seen in the sky. He did send a photo of what he was looking at while listening to The Stew. He was awash in penguins.

We have new music from Jim Cuddy Band, Madeleine Roger

Willie (The Border) and Lake Street Dive

Also Springsteen, BARK, Ray Willie Hubbard, Laurie Anderson,  The Fugees, 54.40 and the aforementioned Dave Brubeck.

And we start and finish The Stew with Boz Scaggs – cause it’s his 80th Birthday.

(Loan me a Dime)

Mulligan Stew May 4th 2024-Salute to Bassist Ron Carter on his 87th Birthday

hello

This first Stew in May reflects the creative freedom of having a sensational fundraiser behind us. All of Us.

On air and off – Thank You donors everywhere!!

On the way home I dug out my handy notebook and realized I had a whole 2 hours on music that I wanted to play and never got the time.

(yes, I still write with a pen and paper. Old school but it’s always worked for me. And I don’t need batteries.)

Heads up –

Saturday, May 4 is Ron Carter’s 87 Birthday.  He’s the most recorded bassist in the history of recorded music.  Played on over 2500 albums but while it’s an astounding number it’s who he played with.

The man is a living history of Jazz. From Miles Davis’ second ground-breaking band in 1953, Wayne Shorter’s Speak no Evil, Herbie Hancocks’s Maiden Voyage,, and Freddie Hubbard’s  Red Clay,  making history with Quincy Jones, Stan Getz and hundreds more.  The man is Jazz Royalty.

I was interested in the popular artists who made sure Ron Carter was on bass when they made music. Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Aretha, Erykah Badu, Roberta Flack, Eddie Harris,

A Tribe Called Quest, Gil Scott-Herron, Santana etc etc etc.

Ron is a teacher, music educator, author, speaker and cellist!

His biography and documentary are both called  Finding The Right Notes
