Pouring wines to pair with the food at the Gala were the wineries of the Naramata Bench

www.naramatabench.com

Three winemakers made the long drive down to the coast to bring the story behind their wines.

Miranda Halliday – Elephant Island

The Hallidays – Elephant Island

Elephant Island began as a family haven, a place of summer picnics, orchard adventures and magical holidays on the Naramata Bench. Today the elephant has grown into a 6,000 case winery driven to craft wines of character. Wines that sing with the unconventional voice of vanguard fruit. Wines that are balanced by a reverence for traditional winemaking practices. Wines that are rooted and inspired by family history.

Having lived on the Bench for 5 years I can tell you that their tasting room is quite possibly the single busiest in the Okanagan.

They make amazing wines and bubble from fruit..a skill very few in Canada can duplicate.

Now they’re crafting  regular wines and have started making cider.

Highly recommend Pink Elephant, The Little King and “Told you so” Viognier.

Much to talk about with co-owner Miranda Halliday.

Bob Ferguson –  Kettle Valley Winery

Bob and Tim from Kettle Valley

Along with partner Tim Watts – Kettle Valley  has been one of the best stories in all of BC wines.

They started making their first wines in an apartment in downtown Penticton.

Sneaking bins of fruit upstairs in the elevator and crushing grapes in the living room and storing them in the closets.

Crazy right?

But that’s how much they wanted to make wines.

As they  finish off their 25th year, as the oldest single-owner winery on the Naramata Bench, they  still remain dedicated to making and sharing great wines from BC grapes.  Their family’s commitment is as strong as ever to farming full flavoured grapes and to winemaking that brings out the best of those flavours and subtleties.

Check out Bob’s latest stories and wines.

Lyndsay O’Rourke – Tightrope Winery

Tightrope Winery: A journey of balance, skill and experience, one step at a time.

Tightrope Winery is a small family run vineyard on the Naramata Bench, BC. The owners are Graham and Lyndsay O’Rourke.  Both studied winemaking at Lincoln University in NZ.  They use their education and experience to grow and make small batches of high quality wine. All of the grapes that go into their wines are sourced from select vineyards on the Naramata Bench.

The journey of bringing grapes to the bottle is a tightrope walk of variables from vineyard management, to winemaking, to the weather and even balancing the cheque book.

Tightrope was named Small Winery of Distinction at the 2015 Northwest Wine Summit Awards.

All eight entries won.

They placed seventh in small wineries in Canada and among the top 10 wineries in B.C. in the 2015 WineAlign of Canada competition.

Garagiste North – The Small Producers Wine Festival

One of my favourite gatherings..actually there’s three this year.

Parksville (Parksville Museum – outdoors)  July 29th, Penticton Aug 27th and next Saturday  April 22nd in Vancouver at Arts Works Gallery.  255 Smythe.

Join them  for a gathering of the small case lot, artisan wine producers at Art Works gallery in Vancouver. Meet the winemakers face to face.  For once, you get to ask all those questions you’ve been meaning to ask.  You will have the opportunity to purchase wine from these hard to find producers right at the event as Marquis Wine Cellars brings you their pop up store.

Partial proceeds go to the Garagiste North Wine Studies Scholarship..

So..this week a teaser on what you can expect next week!!

We talk to:

Mireille Sauve  wine expert and winemaker for Dames Wines.

Daniel Bontorin – Seven Directions   Daniel makes only Rose`

Penelope Roche. – Grew up in Bordeaux. Next door neighbour was Haut Brion. Kids at school called her The Princess because she lived in a Chateau.

Husband Dylan grew up in exotic North Vancouver.  Next door neighbour was a guy named Spike.

Guess who I chose  to talk to?

This was the small winery that turned me on to the possibilities of this movement and these farmers.

April 8th, 2017 Hawksworth & The New Releases

hello

David Hawksworth and his vision for Nightingale.

Looking for a great new wine?  We present the IVSA 2017 new releases.

David Hawksworth

Chef David Hawksworth realized his culinary vision at his first  restaurant, in the very heart of downtown Vancouver. At Hawksworth Restaurant, which opened in 2011, he has created the ideal setting to deliver compelling contemporary Canadian cuisine; a demonstration of his European-trained technical ability, deep appreciation for local ingredients and an absolute insistence on only the very best quality.

Winner of 2012 and 2013 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards Restaurant of the Year and Chef of the Year and for four consecutive years, Best Upscale Dining, as well as enRoute magazine’s top three Best New Restaurants, and Maclean’s magazine Restaurant of the Year; Hawksworth has anchored himself at the helm of the Vancouver – and Canadian – dining scene.

A native Vancouverite who spent a decade honing his talents in Europe working in Michelin-starred kitchens such as Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, L’Escargot and The Square, David Hawksworth soon emerged as one of Canada’s leading culinary talents upon his return in summer 2000. In 2008 David became the youngest chef inductee in to the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame.

Now he has  opened  his next restaurant..Nightingale, a casual room with seriously great  food and service.  Check out the pizza.

Nightingale

It’s in a heritage building on West Hastings. Right around the corner from the iconic Marine Building.

Just announced –  – Find your seat at the Chef’s Table at Nightingale.  Join family, friends or co-workers for a social sharing menu created Georgia Straight Chef of the Year, Phil Scarfone. Bookings are available for groups of up to 18 people with menus starting from $45 per guest. To reserve email [email protected]

I talked to David just as the restaurant was opening.   David explains everything.

April 1st, 2017 – Domenica Fiore/Olio Novello!

hello

It was such a great afternoon..Frank Giustra poured this year’s  version of Dominica Fiore the best Olive Oil in the World, John Skinner founder of Painted Rock pours this year’s  releases  AND  it all took place at Umberto Menghi’s  smashing new restaurant Giardino.

Plus Jim Cuddy and Colin Cripps from Blue Rodeo join Moray Tawse to explain how the new wines The Cuddy by Tawse came to be. All three stories are different.

The best part is all three are storytellers…

THE SHOW

Frank Giustra – Domenica Fiore Olio Reserva Olive Oil

John Skinner – Founder of Painted Rock Wines

Umberto Menghi –  Owner of Giardino

Movie financer and master mind behind some of the most outstanding mining transactions in Latin America, Frank Giustra, Canadian born banker joined Mexican Billionaire Carlos Slim and President Bill Clinton to fight poverty in the region.

Frank Giustra

Rather than attempt to list all of Franks business credits..May I suggest you just Google his name?

Now. About Frank and his Olive Oil..

Frank Giustra always carries several bottles in his luggage whenever he travels.

tdm and Frank Giustra

It has only been five years since Frank bought his first olive tree in Umbria, Italy. At the time, he knew nothing about olive oil and was buying it at Safeway like everyone else.

But Domenica Fiore Olio Reserva, named after his mother, has received the highest score of more than 700 entries from 22 countries at the inaugural New York International Olive Oil Competition. Actually he’s won it multiple times.

He has always loved food, but now he is obsessed!

Domenica Fiore Olio Reserva

Domenica Fiore Olio Reserva extra virgin olive oil ($34.95 for 500 ml) is encased in stainless steel bottles, and vacuum sealed with nitrogen to preserve antioxidants and polyphenols. Each bottle is labeled with a hand-written lot number

Domenica Fiore Olio Reserva

Frank asked his friends John Skinner from Painted Rock and Umberto Menghi from Giardino to partner with him to launch this year’s Olio. I wish you could have been there because it was such fun but we did interviews with all three so you could join us.

John Skinner  was a stockbroker in Vancouver for more than 25 years, during which time he became an avid wine enthusiast. John and his wife Trish dreamed of having their own vineyard after spending time exploring wineries in the South of France with their family.

John Skinner

In 2004, recognizing that the quality of wines in this region was improving dramatically and driven by both his passion for wine and his desire to create a legacy business for his family, he purchased the land in south Penticton known locally as “The Blackhawk.” Perched high on a bench on the east side of Skaha Lake south of Penticton, backing up against the famed climbing bluffs.

He planted in 2005 and 2006 and now has roughly 25 acres under vine, all of it Bordeaux reds or Syrah except for a block of Chardonnay.

On the advice of consultants, he has planted multiple clones of every variety, giving his winemaker good blending options. John was confident that this terroir and its site influences presented “a unique opportunity to create exceptional wines” and that he had “both the opportunity and the obligation to do this property justice.” John and Trish’s vision was and remains to grow exceptional grapes in their estate vineyard to produce ultra-premium wines that reflect the perfect marriage of new world fruit and old world processes, employing the best modern technologies and expertise, while respecting old world traditions. Most satisfying of all is that the whole family has been involved.

Umberto Menghi is already a legendary figure in Vancouver and he’s not done yet!!

umberto menghi

Born in Pontedera, Tuscany, Umberto was sixteen years old when he enrolled in a hotel school in Rome, beginning a life-long commitment to food and the world of great restaurants. After more training in London and Paris, he moved to Canada in 1967, and headed west in 1969. In Vancouver he noted the absence of authentic Italian cooking and determined to do something about it.

In 1973, from a yellow house on the fringe of downtown Vancouver, Umberto started a restaurant revolution with his fresh, authoritative food.

His latest may be his greatest.   Giardino..just steps from his starting point back in 1973.

Moray Tawse

Jim Cuddy

Colin Cripps   The Cuddy by Tawse Winery

Jim Cuddy

Three friends combine their talents to make a new wine label in Niagara – The Cuddy!!

I’ve long known  that Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo & The Jim Cuddy band) will talk wine at the drop of a hat. He’s been a welcome guest on Tasting Room Radio many times.

He has a great cellar at home in Toronto and when he’s on the road,  between shows he goes shopping for wines – especially in Alberta – and loads up the luggage space with selected releases and rare wines.

During the year you can find him playing one-off gigs at wineries all over the country.

Jim is the guy responsible for the amazing talent that graces the stages of The Canadian Culinary Championships. The Gold Medal Plates.

He’s then invited to join the organizers for journeys to South Africa, Italy, France, Spain. So you can see he’s truly a “wine guy”

So,  given the opportunity to create wines with his name on the label who better to partner with than perennial  Winery of the Year Winner Moray Tawse at Tawse, Niagara.

The third member of the winemaking/blending team was guitarist Colin Cripps (Blue Rodeo). The Crippler really knows his wines and especially his blends.

They gathered at Tawse and went over tasting notes on the Chardonnay and then had what Jim called “ a chemistry lesson” when blending the red.

moray tawse

They made a 1000 cases of each and they’ve been released to welcoming reviews.

And how do we in the West get our hands on The Cuddy by Tawse?  Moray explains.

March 26th, 2017- Bodega Garzón

hello

Alberto Antonini, World Class Winemaker who travels the world consulting with vineyards and winemakers presents the wines of Garzon from Uruguay!

James Sichel, 6th generation of his family who’ve been in the wine business in Bordeaux since 1883!

…and Alex Prud’Homme. Author of Julia Child /  The French Chef in America.

THE SHOW

Alberto Antonini

 Uruguay!!

Hands up. How many of us could find Uruguay on a map with no countries identified on it?

Then imagine what the wines coming from Uruguay would be like?

Alberto Antonini

Imagine no longer.
Bodega Garzón, dubbed “little Uruguayan Tuscany”, is situated 11 miles from the Atlantic coast, near the glamorous resort area of Punta del Este, amidst rolling hills covered with vineyards and olive groves.

Saveur magazine called its vineyards’ terroir “arguably, the best in Uruguay.”

Inaugurated in 2016, Bodega Garzón’s new $85 million winery was designed to meet Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) standards, and is already producing elegant, complex, medal-winning wines.

Bodega Garzon has introduced itself to Canadian wine fans and pouring those wines was none other than Alberto Antonini.

He was the consultant who gave himself to the final version of what Uruguayan wines would be like.

Many of us know his work locally with Okanagan Crush Pad in Summerland and their Pinot Noir project in the Garnett Valley.

Bodega Garzón – Restaurante Deck

Here’s a brief rundown of his background.

Alberto Antonini was born in Cerreto Guidi near Florence, Tuscany. His education includes a Doctorate degree in Agricultural Studies from the University of Florence and an enology degree in Bordeaux and at the University of California, Davis.

His experience includes involvement as senior wine maker for the wineries of the Antinori and the Frescobaldi families, two of the leading Italian winemaking families as well as several new world wineries, particularly in the U.S. and Argentina where he is a winemaker for E & J Gallo Winery, Altos Las Hormigas, Bodega Melipal,

Al Este Bodega y Viñedos and Bodegas Nieto Senetiner. In addition he is involved with Concha y Toro in Chile, and as winemaking consultant at Chakana Wines in Argentina, and at Okanagan Crush Pad in Canada. His credits include Castello di Bossi’s modern Chianti Classicos and Merlot Girolamo, as well as the Poggio al Tesoro wines from the Bolgheri joint venture between the Allegrini family and U.S. importer Leonardo LoCascio.

Alberto Antonini blends modern techniques with ancient tradition in the pursuit of premium wine making.

He is cited as a key player in helping Argentine Malbec wines gain international appreciation and reputation.

Bodega Garzon One

“Garzón represents a new wine region, a new winery, and a new concept in agriculture. It has been our goal from early on to introduce state-of-the-art technology to enhance our vineyards and produce premium wines.”

Alejandro P. Bulgheroni  Owner/Founder

We welcome back to the show Alberto Antonini

James Sichel – Sichel Wines (Bordeaux)

James Sichel

A cosmopolitan family with branches all over Europe, the Sichels of Bordeaux were of British origin. Looking back across the generations, we can see that the family’s involvement in the world of wine began in 1856 when Hermann Sichel, then aged 65, set up a wine merchant business in Germany.

In 1883, Sichel moved to Bordeaux and set up an office at 19 Quai de Bacalan – the group’s registered headquarters today – right at the heart of the legendary Chartrons district, the historic centre of activity of the Bordeaux wine merchants. At that time, the company was an acquisitions bureau which procured wines for the Sichel companies in Mainz, London and New York.

Sichel Family

In 1938, Allan Sichel, a member of the British branch of the family, joined forces with three other families to buy the legendary – but at that time extremely dilapidated – Château Palmer. For more than 65 years, continuous, sustained investment has been made in the estate in the quest for greater quality, and it is this which has helped to build its reputation. Today, it is viewed as one of the flagship estates of the Médoc.

Chateau Palmer

In 2002, Maison Sichel bought Château Salle d’Arche and renamed it Château d’Argadens in reference to the Saint Macaire family of nobles which owned it in the thirteenth century. Its ambition for the years ahead is to go on improving the quality of Château Argadens to get its wines recognized as some of the best in the Bordeaux Supérieur category.
Château d’Argadens became known as Château Argadens from the 2008 vintage of its reds and the 2009 vintage of its whites.

James Sichel arrived in Vancouver ready to pour many of his most available wines in an afternoon session

Before everyone arrived I sat down with James to get the story of the Sichel family and how they moved from merchants to negociants!

It helps that James is a wordsmith. He paints word pictures about Bordeaux and Sichel.

Enjoy the stories and the pours.

Alex Prud’Homme – Author  (Julia Child  The French Chef in America)

Julia Child is synonymous with French cooking, but her legacy runs much deeper. Now, her great-nephew and My Life in France coauthor  Alex Prud’Homme vividly recounts the myriad ways in which she profoundly shaped how we eat today. He shows us Child in the aftermath of the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, suddenly finding herself America’s first lady of French food and under considerable pressure to embrace her new mantle. Every bit as entertaining, inspiring, and delectable as My Life in France, The French Chef in America uncovers Julia Child beyond her “French chef” persona and reveals her second act to have been as groundbreaking and adventurous as her first.

In 2004 Alex helped Julia Child write her memoir, My Life in France, about her “favorite years” — 1948-1954 — when she and her husband Paul lived in Paris and Marseille. (Paul was his grand uncle, his grandfather’s twin brother.)

In France Julia experienced “a flowering of the soul” and discovered her raison d’etre in cooking. They  worked together for eight months, until Julia died in her sleep two days shy of her 92d birthday. He spent another year finishing My Life in France, published in 2006. The book reached #1 on the New York Times best-seller list.

In 2009, it inspired half of Nora Ephron’s film “Julie & Julia,” which starred Meryl Streep.

In 2014, a decade after working on My Life in France, he circled back to answer a few questions about Julia that had tugged at his curiosity: what was it like for the Childs to retire from the Foreign Service in 1961, and settle in Cambridge, Massachusetts? How did Julia first appear on Public Television in 1963, win an Emmy in 1966, and land on the cover of Time in 1967? And what led her to the White House, the Queen of England, James Beard and Colonial food, to leave Public TV for Good Morning America, and to become America’s first true celebrity chef?

.

Julia Child and Alex Prud’Homme

Julia reached the peak of her celebrity in the Seventies – epitomized by Dan Aykroyd’s famous “Save the Liver!” parody on Saturday Night Live in 1978 . Researching this era Alex  discovered a trove of articles, scripts, documentary footage, correspondence, and notes about unpublicized or forgotten aspects of the Childs’ lives. Interviewing Julia’s colleagues, he learned how disciplined, hardworking and resilient she was, how deeply she loved her family and friends, the breadth of her culinary knowledge, the depth of her generosity, creativity, curiosity, and natural humor. “The idea,” she said, “was to take the bugaboo out of cooking.”

A Gaggle of Vancouver Sommeliers gathers at Unsworth Vineyards in the Cowichan Valley.  Can’t wait to talk to them.

Includes Somm of the Year Shane Taylor from CinCin!

(check  the outstanding names below)

Richard Da Silva from Misconduct/Naramata Bench guests as well and we finish with one of the best wine minds in the music business

THE SHOW

As soon as I got the invite from Ron Bogdonov GM at Unsworth Vineyards in the Cowichan Valley Vancouver Island I knew it was just too good to pass up.

Chris Turyk, son of owner Tim Turyk and a seriously good wine guy who worked  at Hawksworth!

Chris invited his Sommelier friends in Vancouver and they all agreed to fly over on three planes to spend the day touring the cellars at Unsworth and then finishing with food and wine pairings  in their wonderful dining room.

Chris Turyk

Over 30 in total..all with sharp minds and even sharper tongues.

I recorded the highlights of the tour to start the show  – so you get to take it in as well.

Between the time the lunch ended and the buses left  for the return flight I started asking questions of them – 3 at a time.

I’m drawn to people  in the food and wine business who walk their own path. As a result they usually always make distinctive wines,  with character and focus.

Richard da Silva of Misconduct Wine Co on the Naramata Bench is one of those kind of people.

He makes the suspect and bootleg series of wines. (do you see a theme here)

First off, his family have been growers in the valley for years.  That alone puts him well ahead in the race for fruit and harvest standouts. It shows in his wines.  Blends, single growth varietals and seriously good food wines.

It helps that his food partner  in The Kitchen is a really good chef, Abul Adame.  Mexican born. French trained. He’s one of the very best anywhere in the valley. Over 30 Tapas with a large variety of options.

Love talking to Richard.  He’s a storyteller..it’s just that some of the stories “he can’t tell”.

www.misconductwineco.com

…and finally it’s the semi-annual return of Colin Linden. Musician, Poet, singer/songwriter/producer and a very good friend.

Colin Linden

As he passed through Vancouver with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings we paused to do the usual music interview but then….5 seconds later I’m always asking the same question “what are you drinking” ?

Here’s four minutes of wine talk between two guys with only two minutes to spare.

March 4th, 2017 – The Legendary John Bishop!

hello

One of the legends of Canadian dining..John Bishop joins us for the first two segments..

So much to talk about. Organic. Sustainability. The star chefs who’ve gone through the kitchen.

How Vancouver became the dining destination it is today.

John Bishop IS dining in Vancouver.

Two interviews remaining from our coverage at 2017 VanWineFest.  Tony Holler Owner of Poplar Grove and Chris Tolley  Owner. Winemaker at Moon Cursor

And Josh Hammond – Villa Maria Winemaker in Marlborough.

THE SHOW

John Bishop grew up loving food  in Newton Powys, Wales.  After starting his culinary career in England John moved to Vancouver in 1973.

There were no farmers markets (except for Chinatown) Ingredients always came from somewhere else. France, California, Asia, Italy.

John slowly changed all that by connecting with local farmers, foragers and growers.

John Bishop

John began his career in Vancouver with  Umberto Menghi .  Eventually he opened Bishop’s in 1985 on Fourth Ave.

Since then, Bishop’s has consistently been one of the city’s top restaurants. Annually the restaurant receives top grades from local as well as all the respected North American guides.

FYI – There are four John Bishop books out there..each a great help in your kitchen. Bishop’s, Cooking at My House, Fresh and Simply and  Bishop’s.

John is a storyteller,  a chef, an author and one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

Chris Tolley – Moon Cursor Winery (Osoyoos)

Tasting Room Radio aired around 35 interviews during the 2017 Vancouver International Wine Festival.

We proudly present the last two guests.

Tony Holler purchased Poplar Grove from Ian Sutherland and immediately set about building a spectacular home winery on Munson Mountain above Penticton. He created Monster vineyards just down the hill and has never been busier.

 Chris Tolley  Moon Cursor Vineyards

Beeta & Chris Tolley Moon Cursor

Chris and his wife Beata met at Lincoln University in NZ.  The original name of the winery was  Twisted Tree, which had been the name since 2004.

In the dark of winter 2011, they  made the bold move to change our identity to Moon Curser Vineyards – a name that captures many colourful stories of the Osoyoos area, as well as the renegade spirit of their  winemaking.

Chris was a Software Engineer by training. Farmer and winemaker by day.  His  academic year at NZ’s Lincoln University gave him  a soft spot for offbeat varietals with loads of personality.

Many of us are attracted by their amazing wines they release.

Carmenere, Tannat, Tempranillo, Arneis,  Touriga Naciona and Dolcetto

And the blends – WoW

Border Vines, Dead of Night, Afraid of the Dark.

Love these guys..and love their wines.

 Josh Hammond – Villa Maria

Josh Hammond

Villa Maria is one of New Zealand’s highest profile wineries and certainly the most awarded.

Their sustainable practices are exemplary and consistent.

So…how are the wines?

Given their commitment to the land and the vineyards it’s not surprising how good they are. What may surprise is that their wines – white, red and bubble – are consistent. From one year to the next which all  wine fans  want from their winery.

Production winemaker Josh Hammond passed through Vancouver and most of Canada,  pouring his latest portfolio.

Josh Hammond – Villa Maria

Josh was born and raised in Marlborough, becoming the 5th generation to grow up on the family sheep farm situated next door to where the Villa Maria Marlborough winery now stands. The land, which was considered too fertile for growing grapes by his grandfather, now produces Sauvignon Blanc for Villa Maria.

An early interest in law led Josh to the University of Otago to study a double degree in Law and Chemistry. During this time he also spent six months in Europe on a law exchange studying at Charles University in the Czech Republic.

Then  to California and Burgundy where he gained valuable experience working with a range of grape varieties.

Returning back to his roots Josh joined the Villa Maria Marlborough team as Assistant Winemaker in 2013 and was promoted to Production Winemaker in December of that year.

With the Marlborough Sounds on his door step he enjoys spending time in the outdoors, diving, water skiing and sailing. He also enjoys recreating local dishes from the countries he has visited and matching these with New Zealand wines, for friends and family.

Yours truly had the pleasure of joining others at a tasting in Gastown that was a pleasure from beginning to end.

I had to wait until Josh got back to Marlborough before he had time to talk and give us the full background on the wines below.

Some you can find now..the others marked as “spec” hopefully in the new year.  Just thought you might like to know what’s possible from this fine company down the road.
