June 18th, 2016- Fong on Food and the best patios in Vancouver

hello

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner

Nathan Fong on the Best Patios in Vancouver and why..

Celebrating Pride month in Vancouver with Absolut Rainbow cocktails!!

It’s 40 years since The Judgment of Paris. BC had its own “judgement” last year.

We remember with DK Kearney and surprise winners  Chris Jentsch and Amber Jones at CC Jentsch.

THE SHOW

Nathan Fong – Fong on Food and the best patios in Vancouver

Nathan fong

Nathan fong

My challenge to Nathan was simple..after it stops RAINING where are the best patios for dining, seeing and being seen?

Here’s Nathan’s response

“For me, most patios places are always packed and buzzing during the summer. It’s the time to be seen and alfresco dining is in!

Food and service are always in my top tier…atmosphere, locations and views to me are secondary, nice but not as important as the food that comes out on the plate.

Sure, it’s always great to see the athletic and buff passer-bys rollerblading or jogging on the seawall (such as Ancora, Beach Bay or Provence) or the glorious sunsets from the Coal Harbour Cactus Club or The Teahouse at Ferguson Point, but as you said before, there’s so many places that take the location for granted and the food takes a step down. It’s still important no matter where the location is.”

Nathan Fong is a Vancouver born chef who is an award-winning food stylist, an accomplished food & travel journalist and founder of Fong on Food. His love for food is a family trait that has been the drive behind his work, although he wouldn’t call it a ‘job’ or ‘work’.

In the business since 1989, Nathan is a pioneer in preparing food for photography and film. He developed many of the mouth watering techniques used by food stylists today. It is important to Nathan for the food to look as good in media as it does in person.

For Nathan, travel and food go hand in hand. His drive and passion for travel stems from his desire to expand his palate and share this with others. Explore the world of food through Nathan’s eyes and share in his experiences.

Personally, I think the awards say it all

June is World Pride Month – To celebrate we mix Absolut Rainbow with  bartenders Kaitlyn Stewart (Royal Dinette) and Terence Lowe (Keefer Bar-Fountainhead Pub)
Just in time for World Pride Month in June, Absolut Vodka introduces its latest limited edition bottle: Absolut Mix.

Absolut Rainbow

Continuing Absolut’s long tradition of championing inclusion, Absolut Mix is a tribute to the rainbow flag – an icon of diversity.

Why Absolut Mix? Because the distinctive, signature Absolut bottle blends the six colours of pride in a way that brings them together, yet maintains their individuality, just like Absolut’s vision to encourage people to connect without labels.

Absolut Mix contains the same premium, Swedish vodka as a bottle of Absolut Vodka.

Vancouver bartenders, Terence Lowe, The Keefer Bar + The Fountainhead Pub and Kaitlyn Stewart, Royal Dinette have both created original Absolut cocktails to mark the occasion. Whip one up at home, or order it straight from her bar during  Vancouver’s Pride festival.  We talk mixes, Pride Month and what it means to each, why Absolut took this 30 year journey and Vancouver as a cocktail nation.

The Harvey Milk

The Harvey Milk

Bartender: Kaitlyn Stewart // Bar Manager, Royal Dinette

Concept: “My cocktail concept is based around a homemade milk liqueur. I infused it with blueberries to get a really nice purple colour out of it (purple being a significant colour in the lgbtq community). I named the cocktail “Harvey Milk” to pay homage to the biggest and most significant gay advocate of the last 50 years.

Absolut Mix_Kaitlyn Stewart

Harvey Milk

  • 1 oz. Blueberry milk liqueur
  • ¾ oz. Absolut Mix
  • ½ oz. Odd society Cassis
  • ¾ oz. fresh pressed lemon juice
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • 1 oz. Whey

Combine all ingredients into shaker tin. Vigorously shake for 10-15 seconds. Fine strain over ice into rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon twist and a few blueberries.

Milk liqueur: equal parts vodka to white sugar to whole milk (preferably organic). 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries. 1 whole lemon chopped and 1 whole orange chopped. Combine all ingredients into a mason jar or jug. Let stand for 10 days at room temperature, mixing once a day. On the 10th day, using a fine mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter, carefully transfer contents into another jar. Repeat this step until milk liqueur is translucent. Finished product will be good for 6 months.

 ABSOLUT TOMBOY

Absolut Tomboy

Absolut Tomboy

Bartender: Terence Lowe // The Keefer Bar + The Fountainhead Pub

Terence Lowe

Terence Lowe

Concept: This is a colour-changing variation of a Tom Collins and a French 75 using vodka.

Absolut Tomboy

 1 ½ oz. Absolut Mix

2 oz. Blueberry purée/muddled blueberries

1 oz. “Tomboy Syrup” (red cabbage water, sugar, baking soda)

1 oz. Lime juice

Crushed ice

Sparkling wine/champagne

Add blueberry puree, vodka and Tomboy Syrup into a Collins glass. Fill glass with crushed ice.

Add lime juice and observe colour change. Top with crushed ice and sparkling wine.

Garnish with a lime wheel & blueberries.

Tomboy syrup: To achieve the colour change, add red cabbage juice & sugar. To prepare the cabbage juice, cut a red cabbage into one-inch strips, and add to a microwavable safe bowl. Add water until the cabbage is submerged. Microwave on high until the water is boiling, which should take roughly two and a half to three minutes, depending on the size of the bowl. Add a pinch of baking soda, which will turn the syrup blue. Measure the water and add an equal amount of sugar. Allow the syrup to cool.

Cheers!!

The Judgment of BC –  DJ Kearney (Expert and Organizer) and Chris Jentsch/Amber Jones (CC Jentsch Winery)

2016  marks 40 years since The Judgment of Paris  a blind tasting where a panel of esteemed French judges chose upstart California wines over France’s best.  There were  tremendous aftershocks of this historic event that changed forever the world of wine.
The Paris Tasting of 1976 will forever be remembered as the landmark event that transformed the wine industry. At this legendary contest—a blind tasting—a panel of top French wine experts shocked the industry by choosing unknown California wines over France’s best.

The Paris wine shop owner and expert Steven Spurrier who conceived and organized  the event in Paris  was invited by DJ Kearney to oversee The Judgment of BC last year in Vancouver.

Steven Spurrier & Amber Jones

Steven Spurrier & Amber Jones

(The film Bottleshock was loosely – very loosely  based on this Paris tasting)

DJ and Steven gathered 12 Chardonnays and 12 Syrah in a blind taste off.  6 BC Chards and 6 Syrahs were included to see just how we measured up to other World Wines.

Our Chards held their own but no upsets there. (Blue Mountain was the highest ranked from BC) The top five finishers came from Australia (Soumah 2103), New Zealand (Kumea River 2012), South Africa (Hamilton Russell) and two from France (Jean-Marc Brochard Chablis Premier Cru Montmains 2012 and Bouchard Pere & Fils Meursault Premier Cru Genevrieres 2011).

The surprise winner on the Syrah side was CC Jentsch, which won the whole Syrah event.

Chris Jentsch

Chris Jentsch

No. 2 was Langmeil Shiraz Orphan Bank 2012 from South Australia and third was 2013 Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit from France. The No. 4 and 5 Syrahs were from the Okanagan – 2012 Nichol from Naramata and 2013 Le Vieux Pin Cuvee Classique from Oliver.

First we talk to DJ  Kearney about the Judgment and what it ultimately means to BC and Canadian Wines and why CC Jentsch won the Syrah tastings.

And then after a break we’ll head to The Golden Mile,  South of Oliver and meet the charming Chris Jentsch the co-owner and grower of CC Jentsch  vineyards and the winemaker who created the Syrah and other wines waiting to be discovered. – Amber Jones.

Amber grew up on Vancouver Island and moved to the Okanagan in 2009 to pursue her passion for wine. She came to C.C. Jentsch Cellars with an elite background of experience at Nk’Mip Cellars, Road 13, and Black Hills Estate Winery before accepting Chris’ offer to craft his mature Golden Mile Bench fruit into award winning wines.

Prosecco is distinguished for its fruity and fragrant wine characteristics with a delicate nose. The wine itself demonstrates a straw-yellow colour with greenish hue overlay. The nose offers a fragrant bouquet, including golden apples, citrus fruits and fresh plants, interspersed with lilac and acacia flowers.

The Veneto region was granted DOCG status in 2010 because it is the ideal home for Prosecco. There  is no better place to produce this wine.

In fact, there’s yet to be found any other wine area so perfectly suited to developing wines with the fragrant, complex aromas of Prosecco.

Prosecco sales have gone through the roof..Canada loves it’s Prosecco..for the taste and for the value.  http://www.housewine.ca/about-us/michaela-morris/

7 years ago they were one of the first groups to recognize and support the craft beer industry on the West Coast.

It also did not go un-noticed that they decided to pour an all BC wine list.

I went looking for Trevor because it’s the last two days of Craft Beer Week in Vancouver.

We found him in Toronto where he and his team has just opened the first Donnelly restaurant in Toronto.  Called Belfast Love!

Gave me a chance to ask Trevor about the differences between Toronto and Vancouver dining and wine/beer.

Checking out new pours from Valeria Tate at Bench 1775.

And Daenna van Mulligan brings a Master Class in the wines of The Loire Valley.

THE SHOW

Val Tait – GM and Executive Winemaker  Bench 1775 (Naramata)

Valeria Tait Bench 1775

“There isn’t much Malbec grown in BC, and even fewer (any?) blended with cabernet franc. But that’s the beauty of being an adventurous winemaker like Valeria Tate of Bench 1775 in a pioneering wine region like the Okanagan Valley. From her coveted perch on Naramata Bench, she deftly weaves together interesting blends like this, ignoring convention, thankfully, to spark creativity.”  Treve Ring / Scout magazine

There was a fire sale of wineries on the Naramata Bench a couple of years ago.

They were all owned at one time by Lang Vineyards.

One was called Soaring Eagle with a hand carved sign you couldn’t miss.

The Viticulturalist who helped plan the vineyard was Val Tait. Upon the sale it was re-branded as Bench 1775. The key to any future success was Valeria,  who was pals with that land and those vines.

6 years later, she’s now the General Manager and Executive  Winemaker  There’s a whole wall of hard-won awards and a patio with one of the very best views in the entire province.

Bench 1775

I caught up with Valeria at the recent Naramata Bench Spring pour in Vancouver. She proudly takes us through the new portfolio.

Keep an eye on Valeria Tait. She’s a winner!

Daenna van Mulligen – The Wine Diva – The wines of The Loire Valley

Wine-Diva

Wine-Diva

The Loire Valley is the heart of France, famous for its natural beauty, magnificent châteaux and great wine. The region is rich in history and culture: Renaissance writer Rabelais was born here; Joan of Arc led French troops to victory in the Hundred Years’ War in the Loire; and, as the Cradle of the French Language, its residents speak the purest French.

The Loire Valley contains several distinct wine regions, each with its own characteristic grapes, appellations and styles

As a testament to all the region contributes to French and global culture, the Loire Valley (between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes-sur-Loire) was added to UNESCO’ World Heritage list in 2000.

Who better than to take all of us through a master class in the character of  Loire wines than The Wine Diva.

That consistency of character is remarkable when you consider that the Loire follows a 630-mile course from a source near Beaujolais to the Atlantic Ocean. The Loire is a land of moderation: It’s cold in the winter, and never gets super hot in the summer. Vines can really only grow here because of the river and its tributaries, which raise the temperature just those few vital degrees and ensure long, leisurely autumn days for the harvest.

The countryside is beautiful—wide expanses of vines, gentle slopes, grand castles and ancient cities, all dominated by the rivers and the milky blue light of the summer sky. If a vineyard area deserves to be called pastoral, this is it.

When you realize that the region is dominated by a mere four major varieties—Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne and Cabernet Franc—the wines become accessible, and therefore enjoyable. This is step one in deciphering the surface complexity of Loire wine.

Please take a seat – The Wine Diva class is about to begin.

Cannonball/Angels and Cowboys  –  Yoav Gilat(Founder/CEO)  Healdsburg

 CANNONBALL WINE CO logo type-01-1519x575

A&C 2012 RED FRONT-689x638

The Cannonball dive is a dive for the people.  It doesn’t discriminate against body type, race, religion, political affiliation, social status, or fashion sense.  And if you’ve never done a Cannonball then you’d better just shut down this computer, go find a body of water, and dive in!  When you’re jumping into the water on a beautiful summer day, with nothing on your mind except leaping high, balling up tight, and making a splash that is going to get as many people wet as possible, that moment you’re in the air might be the best feeling you can have with your swimsuit on.

Cannonball exists because of 2 founding partners – Yoav Gilat and Dennis Hill.  Visionary Yoav brims with more energy than a speeding hummingbird as he oversees the entire Cannonball operation. He brings 20 years of experience in consumer goods and beverages and fell in love with Sonoma and Mendocino when providing strategy/marketing to Blackstone Winery. Fed up with the over-priced, stuffy wine scene, Yoav made it his mission to produce a range of “serious wines that don’t take themselves too seriously”.  He wants you to enjoy the expertly crafted wines whilst being transported back to a time when the only point in life was to have fun. “Dive in and share a splash”. This explains the concept behind the packaging and brand.

Pssst! If you find Angels and Cowboys Rose..buy it. Buy it all.. it’s that good.

“I enjoy drinking wines from all over the world – Bordeaux, Burgundy, Tuscany, Switzerland and, Napa Valley. No matter what the origin I look for purity of fruit, personality, character and a sense of place. For a wine to be great it must stand the test of time.”

LangeTwins-Feat-Img-e1416585148572

Notes from Randall and Brad Lange

During the 1870’s  Great-Grandparents, Johann and Maria Lange, settled in Lodi and began a family farm growing non-irrigated watermelons with their son, Grandpa Albert. The farm grew year over year and by 1916 they had the  family’s first grape-ranch. It was on this ranch where their  dad, Harold, was born in 1920.

Grandpa and Dad’s farm expanded to include the River Ranch and the DeVries Road Ranch, where the family was raised. They  continued the tradition of working the vineyards and in 1974  decided to farm on our own. It was an exciting time for them because as they grew their business, their  family grew as well. Both married (Randall to Charlene and Brad to Susan) and by 1982 the fifth generation was here! Between our families we have five kids — Marissa, Aaron, Philip, Kendra and Joe.

As the kids grew up on the River Ranch they developed an appreciation for winegrowing by working summers and harvest . After college they each decided to come back to the family farm, so they took the next step and built a winery in 2006.

Today they all have unique responsibilities within the winery and viticulture teams, continuing their agricultural roots and growing their winery and wine brands. As fifth generation winegrowers they look forward to working with the sixth!

Gloria Ferrer – Juan Furne  (President  Friexenet Atlantic)

GloriaFerrer[1]

Back in the early 80’s there were only a handful of winegrowers planting Pinot Noir in Carneros. And yet, the Ferrer Family knew the key to a world-class méthode champenoise wine would be Pinot Noir.

The Gloria Ferrer winemaking team’s quest for perfection takes them to Champagne where they manage to acquire Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones.

Gloria Ferrer is not only the first sparkling wine house in Sonoma Carneros, but also the first to plant Champagne clones and the first to plant in Carneros.

Almost thirty years later, with 335 acres under vine, the estate vineyards at Gloria Ferrer produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that rival some of the world’s finest.

St Francis  – Chris Silva (President/CEO)  Sonoma

chris-silva-04

Fifth-generation Sonoma County native, Christopher Silva is firmly rooted in Sonoma County agriculture. He was raised in a family of Petaluma dairy farmers, and nine years after graduating from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, he retired from practicing law to join St. Francis Winery. At the age of 38, he became President & CEO of St. Francis in 2003. He understands firsthand that a farmer’s footprint and intimate knowledge of the soil, microclimates and terroir of the region are the most important ingredients for healthy vines.

As President & CEO of St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, Chris has a specific focus: crafting world class Sonoma wine. St. Francis is best known for luscious, elegant, fruit driven Sonoma County Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and “Old Vines” Zinfandel.  Additionally, St. Francis was named “#1 Restaurant in America” by Open Table  in 2013 and 2015 in recognition of its farm to table wine and food pairings offered on site to Winery visitors each day.

“Our time at St. Francis will not be measured in years. It will be measured by the contributions each one of us makes—as individuals—to constantly improving the quality of our grapes and our wines. ‘Good enough’ is contrary to our mission.”

Chris gives us a Master Class in St Francis ZIN.

St Urbans-Hof  –  Nik Weis  (Owner-GM)

nick weis

and finally..from half a world away – in Germany’s Mosel Region comes Nik Weis Owner and GM of St. Urbans-Hof.

The winery St. Urbans-Hof is one of the most renowned wineries of the growing region Mosel and distinguishes itself by the particularity of owning best positions both on the Moselle and on the Saar. The Weis family who founded the winery in 1947, always focused on quality, which was almost a rarity, especially in the seventies and eighties. Authenticity is for Nik Weis, the grandson of the founder doing a very important feature. According Riesling is exclusively developed, the intervention in the vineyard and cellar are as gentle as possible. The nursery of the estate,  is among the most important in Europe.

It was a privilege to be poured some spectacular wines, including the Wiltinger Alte Reben 2014, which arrives in early spring, as well as some of the older vintages dating back to 1990 from Ockfener Bockstein, Laurentiuslay, Goldtropfchen  and a drop of Eiswein or two.

Jeff Martin  (La Frenz) and Senka Tennant (Terra Vista) – Naramata Bench

Naramata Bench

Naramata Bench

Every year about this time the wine regions of BC journey into Vancouver and pour their Spring wines.

It’s such a great time of the year.

The Naramata Bench always bring an organized and highly charged presence to their showcase pours.

Two of the very best winemakers in Canada joined us at the Roundhouse Radio Studios to walk us through selected wines from their portfolios.

Terravista Vineyards

Senka Tennant –Co- Owner / Winemaker

Terravista Vineyards was started in 2008 by Bob and Senka Tennant. As a bit of history…Bob and Senka have been in the BC grape/wine industry for the past 16 years. Senka as winemaker and Bob as vineyard and business operator at their first business, Black Hills Estate Winery. In 2007, Black Hills was sold and Bob and Senka, not wanting to leave the industry, started looking for a small piece of property on which to establish a new vineyard and winery. Their idea was to concentrate on a couple of white grape varieties that had been attracting their interest.

After extensive searching, a piece of property was found on the Naramata Bench about halfway between Penticton and Naramata. The two chosen grape varieties for the home vineyard were Albarino and Verdejo – white grape varieties grown for 9 centuries in northwest Spain and Portugal. Over the next three years they were able to plant their vineyard as certified plant stock, sourced from California nurseries, became available. From these two varieties they are now producing the sensational white wine they call “FANDANGO“!

Grapes purchased form a select few dedicated growers allow for the production of their other white wine.  It is a delicious blend of the grape varieties Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne that they call “FIGARO”!

New releases Senka  wanted  to talk about –  the Albarinio 2015 and Figaro 2014.

La Frenz – Jeff Martin Co-Owner and Winemaker

Jeff Martin-La Frenz

Jeff Martin-La Frenz

– Jeff was ready  to talk about the 2014 Desperation Hill Pinot Noir and his

2015 Alexandria.

Jeff Martin comes from the Riverina area of Australia, and has been involved with grape growing and wine making since early childhood. Even today, much of his extended family is heavily involved in the Australian wine industry.

Jeff became involved in the wine industry at the age of eighteen, when he was employed by renowned Australian producer McWilliams as a trainee winemaker at their half million case Beelbangera facility. Here, Jeff gained a wealth of experience in a wide range of styles: table wines, fortified wines, and even fine brandy distillation. In 1983, he received one of the first degrees in enology from Charles Sturt University. During his fourteen-year career with McWilliams, he worked with many of their vineyards, from the “cool climate” hilltops area in New South Wales to the famous “terra rosa” of Coonawarra in South Australia. In 1989, Jeff became the chief red winemaker for the McWilliams group, with his wines winning major awards at Australian wine shows.

Jeff now dedicates his experience to producing some totally unique wine styles at LA FRENZ. His talent is widely recognized and he still regularly judges at international wine shows in the U.S.

Harry McWatters

Harry McWatters

Harry McWatters, one of the original wine pioneers in the Okanagan  has purchased the former PenMar Theatre Complex in Penticton and will convert it into an urban winery.

Encore Vineyards Ltd. made the announcement Last week.

The urban winery will be the first of its kind in the South Okanagan. While the concept is new to the area, urban wineries are in place in the United States.

Once renovations to the building are completed, the winery will include a crush pad, barrel cellar, custom fermentation hall, lab, warehouse and administrative offices.

It will also have a tasting bar, small plates lounge, outdoor patio and wine retail shop.

While three of the four theatres will be converted for wine production, the fourth will be maintained as a 75-seat theatre space.

Here’s a quick catch-up with harry about how it all went down.

Let’s hope it’s the first of many..a concept whose time has come.

What is a garagiste? (gar-ah-jeest).  It started out in France (of course) where it was a derogatory phrase for those avante garde and crazy mavericks making wine in their garage and outside the highly regulated system. Gradually and grudgingly came the acknowledgement that something really interesting was happening with these small case lot artisan wines, and a movement was born.

They bring together the small guys. Wines produced from 100% Canadian grapes and under 2000 cases total production annually.

It’s been said that some of these winemakers and blending artists will change the way BC wines are made in the future.  They have no restrictions..they think outside the box and they have unlimited passion for their craft.

Under the radar?  Yup.  Some even choose to stay under the radar and challenge  all of us to  FIND THEM.

April 9th 2016- Charles Smith, Nathan Fong & The wines of Navarra with Jordi Vidal

hello

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner B

Sir Charles Smith. Crown Prince of Walla Walla has the third largest winery in Washington State  and the largest head of hair in the industry.
He insisted on getting out feet massaged while doing the interview.
Nathan Fong is a chef and food specialist. He’s also the voice and face of BC food around the World.
We finish with a visit to the wines of Navarra with Jordi Vidal The managing director of  the region in the North of Spain.

THE SHOW

Charles Smith

Charles Smith

Growing up just outside of Sacramento, California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Charles Smith began craving worldly travel at a young age due to his Welsh mother and French father. As soon as he had the chance, Charles decided to move to Denmark (for a lady friend he met in the states). While in Scandinavia, Charles spent the next nine years managing rock bands and concert tours throughout Europe, including the famed Danish duo, The Ravonettes. Wining and dining while on the road became a catalyst for his passion of wine, which ultimately triggered the career he has today.

In 1999, he moved back to the United States, specifically to the Pacific Northwest, opening a wine shop on Bainbridge Island, just across the Puget Sound from downtown Seattle. On a road trip in late 1999, he passed through the small town of Walla Walla and met a young Frenchman and winemaker. The two men discovered their common passion for great Syrah and Charles was eventually convinced to move to Walla Walla and make his own juice. In 2001, Charles released 330 cases of his first wine, the 1999 K Syrah. The Walla Walla Valley was now his home.

After a devastating freeze in 2004, Charles brought to life a label he had once in a dream: House Wine. Low and behold, the label concept had never been created or trademarked, so Charles launched the legendary brand before selling it to Precept Brands in 2006. That same year, Charles started a second brand, Charles Smith Wines. The brand was themed as “The Modernist Project,” which focuses on the way people generally consume wine today: immediately. The intent was (and still is) to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with true typicity of both the varietal and the vineyard.

A self-taught winemaker, Charles is a true artisan and a pioneer in the wine world. In 2008, K Vintners was recognized by Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the “Best New Wineries of the Last Ten Years,” and as “Winery of the Year” in their annual buying guide. In 2009 Food & Wine magazine awarded Charles “Winemaker of the Year” and in 2010 Seattle Magazine recognized Charles as their “Winemaker of the Year.”

Charles Smith-Footopia

Charles is celebrating 10 years of making wines and kicking down doors.

Tinsletown Mall in Vancouver. He insists the interview take place while we both have intense foot massages. He had way more fun than I did.

Great guy. Good friend. Wonderful wine maker.

Nathan is also the food expert who represents the BC government around the World.

The wines of Navarra with Jordi Vidal

The general manager of Navarra Wines is Jordi Vidal.

He takes us through some whites but focuses in on 4 great reds.

A longer version of this interview will run in a couple of weeks.

navarraThe region of Navarra in northern Spain is home to two cultural events whose
reputations have risen beyond popular to mythical, each year attracting the
rompish and pious in droves.

One of them, for contemplative Christian pilgrims, involves a long walk
across the top of Spain on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, beginning
in Navarra and ending in Galicia. The other, for thrill-seeking
crowd-lovers, involves a short run (with bulls) through the streets of the
city of Pamplona during the San Fermin festival, which Ernest Hemingway made
famous in his 1926 novel, “The Sun Also Rises.” Papa mentions wine from the
neighboring region of Rioja in the book, but surely he drank his share of
Navarra wines there too. And Lord knows, many a pilgrim has quaffed the
local wine after a long day on the trail in Navarra.

Although the wines of Navarra are not as well known as the Camino or
Pamplona, they should not be overlooked. What you get from Navarra is a
variety of solid wines at a lower cost than the wines from more-famous
Spanish locales.

Picture3

‘What is our signature grape?’ is a question asked in many wine regions
around the world, but especially in those which compete with dominant
neighbours. It’s highly pertinent in Navarra, which fits into Rioja as one
piece of a jigsaw into another, but which is very much in the shadow of
Spain’s most powerful brand. In the list of 107 winners of last year’s Wines
from Spain Awards in London, just one still wine was from Navarra – and
that, tellingly, was from Bodegas Julián Chivite, a producer busily
distancing itself from the region that is its home. Indeed, the Chivite
story could be seen as a distillation of the problems Navarra faces in
achieving recognition on the world stage.
