February 29th, 2020- Top Drop 2019- Victoria

hello

TOP DROP / FIRST TIME IN VICTORIA

The press release came in loud and clear.

For the very first time Top Drop was coming to Victoria.

Frankly, that’s all I needed to know.

I’ve been happily covering this small wildly successful wine gathering for
Six Years but Top Drop in Victoria is a whole other event. Why? Because
Victoria is a great wine town.

TOP DROP is Vancouver based so they needed a Victoria Host. Turns out the
Vessel crew have been watching this independent, craft wine festival seed
and grow in Vancouver, and spread to Calgary in 2018. This was their year to
launch it in Victoria for ONE DAY .

Victoria International Marina

Top Drop is an opportunity to celebrate authenticity in farming, terroir
and wine, with winery principals from around the globe.

Mirroring Top Drop Vancouver and Calgary’s flagship experience, the public
event is a walk around, grazing-style tasting where attendees enjoy sips
and stories from the principals of international and local wineries. There
has never before been a wine tasting of this scope and caliber in Victoria.

For me and TRR, the voice and face of Top Drop has always been Kurtis Kolt.
Wine educator and Wine writer for the Georgia Straight.

Kurtis and TD

Because of the foul weather, Kurtis and his partners were delayed in
Vancouver and could not attend while I was there.

Once again Kurtis Kolt and his partner Jeff Curry and a sensational team
have convinced some of the very best winemakers to pour at Top Drop.

What they have in common is craft and care!

In Kurtis’ column in the Georgia Straight he said this:

“Each year, our process begins the same. Our team casts out a wide net to
British Columbia-based importers and wineries, asking for winery
applications to participate in the event. First and foremost, Top Drop
wineries must fit with our general philosophy: that wines, indeed, express
terroir or offer a sense of place.

Whether we’re talking vines grown in mineral-rich soils or under
cool-climate growing conditions bringing bright acidity or in sun-drenched
regions offering generous, opulent fruit and so on, we want those elements
to be notable in the glass and for them to have arrived there authentically,
rather than via heavy-handed additions in the winery.

Sustainable farming is also key. There is a high priority on those who
employ these methods while farming their own fruit or who work with growers
who fit the mold.”

hello

Special guest Gord Sinclair. Bassist, singer, and songwriter for The Tragically Hip. Terry talks about the new album Taxi Dancers and what life is like post Tragically Hip and the emotional journey he underwent to create the album.

EP 95 | Andy Shauf-Neon Skyline

hello

Andy Shauf’s new album The Neon Skyline ..is presented in full storytelling concept.

The interconnected songs were all written, performed, arranged and produced by Andy, and follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up.

Some of his characters can be found in his last album The Party.  All are sympathetic people who share countless inside jokes, shots, and life-or-death musings when the night gets hazy.

It just happens to be one of the best albums I’ve heard in quite a while.  The delight in the songs may not reveal themselves on first listen but the second time..the puzzle starts to show itself.

Please enjoy this chat with a true star in the making…if he wants to go down that road.

Mulligan Stew Feb 22 2020- Andy Shauf – The Neon Skyline

hello

For those music fans who discovered the seductive narrative of  Andy Shauf through his last album The Party, just know that he’s hooked up with three of the party-goers and headed for The Skyline Bar in Parkdale, Toronto.

There’s his buddy Charlie, Rose the bartender and  Judy.

Oh!  His ex is in the bar as well.

You just don’t hear concept albums and certainly not concept songwriting and production at this level.

PhotoCreditColinMedley

Amy van Keeken, who knows a thing or two about songwriting wrote me a note ..

The Neon Skyline is so good. Listening to the whole album start to finish

in one go (like people used to do) adds a deeper level of meaning to the songs and the narrative.  It’s brilliant”

Andy’s buddies Foxwarren are up for a Juno Award March 15 but Andy will be in Bourdeaux on tour.

I’ve asked Andy to leave his acceptance speech with us in our chat.

The rest of our two-hour show features handpicked Saturday night music.

February 22nd, 2020 -VANWINEFEST  – ALL STAR ARCHIVES

hello

VANWINEFEST  – ALL STAR ARCHIVES

THE SHOW

We’ve been happily  covering the annual Vancouver International Wine Festival for 12 years.

This year the events start Feb 22 with the Bacchanalia Gala and Auction  and ends with the Vintners Brunch March 1.

This one hour special will feature some of the highlight interviews from years past.

In the grand tasting room, we set up a large round table, fill it with a forest of microphones  and invite as many winemakers and principals as possible over the course of one afternoon.  Once you set it in motion, it’s always a fantastic blur.

We’ll go  as far back  as 2010 an feature a conversation  with  Anthony von Mandl introducing us to Marchesi Piero Antinori . Two visionary giants surrounded by rivers of people walking around us.

Mulligan Stew Feb 15th 2010-The Bard & The Beatles

hello

For centuries scholars have debated whether William Shakespeare actually wrote the plays attributed to him. How about  John Lennon, George Harrison  or Paul McCartney?

Opening tonight at The Citadel in Edmonton, director Daryl Cloran weaves  two dozen Beatles’ songs into the text of As You Like It, set in 1960s Vancouver and “the wild Okanagan.“

EP 94 | Daryl Cloran Shakespeare and the Beatles

hello

William Shakespeare’s As you like it has been called his Romantic Comedy (RomCom).

It’s got laughs,   love and rejection, women dressed as men, men dressed as wrestlers.

And Director Daryl Cloran was challenged to weave  the magic of The Beatles into the dialogue.

Instead of soliloquies..we get I am the Walrus.

25  Beatles songs, William Shakespeare AND wrestling.  Let’s go.

Opens tonight at The Citadel in Edmonton

“As You Like” by RMTC and Citadel performed at the John Hirsch Mainstage as part of the master playwrights festival.

“As You Like It” cleverly blends Shakespeare’s gift with language and 25 Beatles songs performed live, including She Loves YouI Want to Hold Your HandLet It Be and Here Comes the Sun. Will you love it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

“Like it? I loved it. This one’s a hit.” –  Georgia Straight

“You’d have to be a real nowhere man not to be on your feet and singing along.” -Vancouver Sun

Tickets for the first week are nearly sold out. Book yours, and make sure to arrive early for the pre-show Superstar Wrestling match!

“As You Like It” runs from Feb 15 – Mar 15, 2020 at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre.

Music begins at 7:05 p.m. Wrestling begins at 7:15 p.m.

EP 92 | Colin Linden and Tom Wilson

hello

Although they each have successful solo careers, Colin Linden,  Tom Wilson, and road warrior  Stephen Fearing together are Blackie and The Rodeo Kings.

In 2020 the boys celebrate being together and making music for 25 years.

How did they kick off 2020?

Jan 4 they played The  Ryman Theatre, home of The Grand Ol’ Opry.

Stephen Fearing packed his bags and went touring his solo album  The Unconquerable Past!

Colin won a Grammy for Keb Mo’s Oklahoma,  which Colin co-produced in his home studio in Nashville.
Just days ago  Tom Wilson gets a Juno nomination for Lee Harvey Osmond.

And Blackie releases King of this Town.

The coming tour may take the entire year!

What started off in  1996 as a one-off tribute album in celebration of the music of Willie P Bennett has evolved into 25 years of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

Quite simply one of Canada’s finest bands.  Ever!!

Enjoy the stories!
