EP 281 | Tom Cochrane Songs & Stories. The Duo. Canada West Tour

hello

In the spectrum of popular music in Canada, which is as wide as the country, Tom Cochrane falls somewhere between an electrified Gordon Lightfoot and a solo Gordon Downie.

Between the universal prose of Leonard Cohen and the blood passion of Tom Wilson.

Three times we went to the war-torn fields and roads of Africa for World Vision and became lifelong friends. That’s what seeing men, women and children dead or dying will do to you. You seek humanity. Tom’s got humanity in spades.

He came back from the first trip under a heavy dark load and sought out the only thing that he knew would lift him up. Music. He wrote a song called Life is a Highway. It became an anthem for millions. All lifted up by his music.

Tom Cochrane is heading back West now. The tour is called Duo.

Friday night in Medicine Hat, Saturday night  in Edmonton (Expo Centre)

Then to the coast and a complete tour of Vancouver Island.

Between the universal prose of Leonard Cohen and the blood passion of Tom Wilson.

Mulligan Stew September 2nd 2017-Huey Lewis-Robert Lamm-Colin James-Tom Cochrane-Ruth Pointer Interviews!

hello

Every once in a while you get handed a “gift “
My gift this Summer was a series of concerts being presented by the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition)
With the help of their media office, I was able to interview
Colin James
Ruth Pointer – The Pointer Sisters
Tom Cochrane
Robert Lamm – Chicago
Huey Lewis
And so…I’ve been editing like mad to make all five interviews and their music fit into two hours of The Stew.

Colin talks  about the surprising success of Blue Highway
Tom tells to story behind Red Rider getting back together again
Huey Lewis – spins stories on what it’s like to walk out on stage
Ruth Pointer wants her sisters to sing Wang Dang Doodle like KoKo Taylor
Robert Lamm remembers how and why he wrote Questions 67&68 and Saturday in the Park.
Enjoy!!!!   Have a great weekend….
Huey Lewis and The News are truly one of America’s great rock & roll bands. As they enter their 38th year together, their contagious brand of music has outlasted countless trends, and is as fresh today as ever.
Formed from two rival Bay Area bands in 1979, they continue to thrill audiences worldwide, selling over 20 million albums in the process, earning them the right to mark their place on the pop history map.
These Grammy Award winners have written and performed such classic Top Ten Hits as “Heart of Rock & Roll”, “Stuck With You”, These Grammy Award winners have written and performed such classic Top Ten Hits as “Heart of Rock & Roll”, “Stuck With You”, “I Want A New Drug,” “If This Is It,” “Hip To Be Square,” “Do You Believe In Love” and “Workin’ For A Livin.” The group also wrote and performed “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time” for the hit film Back To The Future.
“The Power of Love,” nominated for an Academy Award, went to #1 on Billboard’s singles chart, and was a smash hit worldwide.

Mulligan Stew March 4th 2017- Tom Cochrane Interview!

hello

Tom Cochrane is starting his Mad Mad World 25th anniversary tour this week in the West.
That’s the album that gave us Life is a Highway. And many fans for Tom.
26 years ago Tom and I had traveled to Malawi, Ethiopia, Mozambique and other African nations on behalf of World Vision.
He guests on Saturdays Stew and we have lots to talk about.
Tom and I have always talked..we’ve developed a shorthand over the years.
There was a moment in the skies over Africa in a small prop plane in the middle of a violent storm,  where be both looked at each other and said “ we may not get through this”.
Tom was in the co-pilot seat..I thought that was a good sign.
Those kinds of things pull you together.
We both came back to Canada changed humans.
You can’t walk through camps where people die in front of you and not be changed.
Thankfully, when you leave the tents where the life or death battle takes place…you’re greeted by the cured,  the healed and the just plain lucky.
They sing, they dance, they celebrate being alive.
It shows itself in Tom’s music

Tom Cochrane Interview – 2014

hello

RAW INTERVIEW HERE:

Tom COCHRANE 2014 RAW
Thomas William Cochrane was born in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada, on May 14, 1953.
His father, Tuck Cochrane, wasn’t just  a bush pilot. He was a flying/exploring legend in Northern Manitoba.
At the age of 11, Tom sold his toy train set…and bought his first guitar!
By the early 1970′s, Tom was performing in coffee houses all across Canada.
Next, he was on the road to Los Angeles, where Cochrane took a job writing original songs for the movies…but unable to find steady money in music…he headed to Toronto, where he drove a taxi. He also found work on cruise ships…hoping to return to music.
After meeting at the “El Mocambo Tavern,” in 1978, Tom Cochrane joined “Red Rider.” He would be the lead singer, and main song writer, for more than 10 years.
Red Rider was also: Ken Greer, Jeff Jones, Peter Boynton and Rob Baker. By 1986, they were “Tom Cochrane & Red Rider.”

TDM and Tom Cochrane-AfricaTDM invited Tom to join him on a World Vision Tour of Somalia, Mozambique  and other war torn countries in Africa. It changed both their lives.
Tom Cochrane would launch his solo career in 1991, with “Life Is A Highway” (#6/1992).
The “Mad, Mad World” album (seen at the top of the story) would sell 6 million copies!
The albums “Ragged Ass Road,” “Songs Of A Circling Spirit,” “X-Ray Sierra” and “No Stranger” would follow.
He and wife Kathleen have 2 daughters, Cody and Evanne. They live in Oakville, Ontario. In the winter, the  Cochranes spend time at his home outside of Austin, Texas.
Tom Cochrane has earned many awards over the years, both for his music and charity work. He has won 7 “Juno” awards, is a member of the “Canadian Music Hall Of Fame,” and officer of the “Order Of Canada,” is an honorary Colonel in the “Royal Canadian Air Force,” and a 2009 inductee onto the “Canadian Walk Of Fame,” among other recognition.
He continues to tour, packing in the crowds, across Canada.
He plays Grey Eagle Resort in Calgary  Feb 20.
Tom’s first Lp in years has just been released..it’s called Take it Home..
We talk his new music, being a Canadian living in Texas, why Austin and not Nashville, why Canadian artists over the years have been able to capture the soul of the American south.
