BC Chefs Urgently Call to Kill Bill 24-Interview!

hello

“Chefs and Restaurateurs have worked hard over the past 40 years to support our farms for not only the food they produce but also the culture they bring to our industry. Growing local food is not a thing of the past it is our present and our future, never has the demand been higher for locally sourced nutritious food.” – Scott Jaeger, president, Chefs’ Table Society of British Columbiachefs4alr

  • Chef Robert Belcham, chef/owner Campagnolo Restaurant
  • Chef Karen Dar Woon, Your Secret Chef
  • Chef Tret Jordan, Homer Street Cafe & Bar
  • Chef Chris Whitakker, Forage
  • Chef Dana Reinhardt, chef/owner SOL Kitchen Consulting
  • Chef Jonathan Chovancek, vice president, Chefs’ Table Society, chef (new) Café Medina and co-proprietor of Bittered Sling Extracts
  • Chef Ryan Bissell, executive chef, AMS Student Society of UBC Vancouver.
  • Chef Scott Jaeger, president, Chefs’ Table Society, and chef owner, Pear Tree Restaurant
  • Nessa van Bergen, executive director, Chefs’ Table Society
  • Chef Ned Bell, executive chef, Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver
  • Chef Robert Clark, chef/owner The Fish Counter
  • The Chefs’ Table Society of BC wants to stop Bill 24, and needs help to spread the word, before it’s too late.

They urgently call on people of BC to read this and then send a note to the government Tell BC Government to Stop Bill 24

Bill 24 proposes to divide the Agriculture land reserve into 2 zones, the changes being put forward are in zone 2 which contains 90%  of the protected land. This will essentially open the door to remove 90% of the mere 5% of B.C.’s  ALR.

The Chefs’ Table Society of British Columbia has had a social media storm brewing – with selfies and calls to action with the hash tag #chefs4ALR and #killbill24

Now they are calling upon the media and public to help spread the word and call to protect BC farmland  – read this open letter, entitled Farmland is Important to Me.

THE SHOW

This gathering, organized by Wines of BC,  was an opportunity to sit with the 6 wine talents  below and get up to speed on what’s going on at their wineries, their regions and their Spring/Summer releases.

We start with the host of the gathering..the one and only DJ Kearney. [divider]  David Lebovitz is the author of My Paris Kitchen. Here’s David’s description of his life and times.

Eiffle Tower

Eiffle Tower

I began working in restaurants at the age of sixteen, until I ended up at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California, working with Alice Waters and co-owner, Executive Pastry Chef Lindsey Shere, who I consider my mentor. I spent nearly thirteen years in the kitchens at Chez Panisse before leaving in 1999. I left the restaurant business in 1999 to pursue writing books and now live in Paris full time. My Books I’ve written six books. The first two were the critically acclaimed Room for Dessert and Ripe for Dessert which are now out of print and considered collectible. Afterward I went on to write The Great Book of Chocolate, which was my ode to my favorite ingredient – chocolate! The Perfect Scoop is my best-selling guide to making homemade ice cream, sorbets, sherbets, and all the good stuff that gets swirled and mixed in and ladled on top. The Sweet Life in Paris tells the story of my move to Paris, the ups and the downs. It includes stories about how I adjusted to life in a city that sometimes left me scratching my head, but ultimately won me over. The book features nearly fifty recipes, both sweet and savory, and was a finalist for an International Association of Culinary Professionals Literary Award.
My Paris Kitchen

My Paris Kitchen

My most recent book is Ready for Dessert, a collection of my all-time favorite recipes, some from my first two books, which were updated and revised. Plus there’s plenty of new recipes for cakes, cookies, ice creams, pies, crisps, and other treats.  and now,,, David gives us My Paris Kitchen. A really fun read..great stories that help us understand the complexities of Paris,  Parisians and their food… and its my wife Megs newest favourite book! www.davidlebovitz.com     [divider] ,,,and we finish with two of Australia’s best. Neil McGuigan  from McGuigan Neil McGuigan first rose to fame in 1985 when restaurateur and wine merchant, Johnny Walker referred to Neil as “the most brilliant young winemaker of his time”. He has lived up to these expectations by leading the McGuigan Wines team to the prestigious title of International Winemaker of the Year and Australian Producer of the Year in 2009, 2011 and 2012, becoming the first winemaker in the competitions 44 year history to win this award 3 times at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Alongside this, Neil also picked up the International White Winemaker of the Year in 2009 and 2012 at the International Wine Challenge, London. Neil McGuigan is one of Australia’s foremost winemakers and brings over 30 years experience in the wine industry to Australian Vintage and McGuigan Wines. Growing up in a family of winemakers in the Hunter Valley naturally led Neil to pursue a career in winemaking and viticulture. Neil is a respected wine judge at National and International levels. Neil was appointed CEO of Australian Vintage in July 2010. https://www.mcguiganwines.com.au Nick Keukenmeester from Heartland  Nick is the GM for Ben Glaetzer’s Heartland. Nick divides his time between the winery, the tasting room, the vineyards and his  distributors around the world making sure everything is perfect. I found him romancing a rack of ribs at Memphis Blues on Broadway. Ben Glaetzer  Co-Owner and Winemaker A key factor to the success of Heartland is that the  winemaker Ben Glaetzer  is one of the owners.  Ben has received innumerable accolades from around the world for his winemaking prowess over a number of years. Although Ben is still young by winemaker standards; his list of accomplishments places him among the giants of Australian and international winemaking. Ben has been made a “Baron of the Barossa” for his contribution to the cultural fabric of the Barossa Valley. Life membership of this wine fraternity is by invitation only. In July 2011, July 2012 & July 2013 Ben Glaetzer, Glaetzer Wines was awarded 5 stars in James Halliday 2012, 2013 & 2014 Wine Companions. Ben is the maker of Amon-Ra Shiraz..one of the world’s best Reds. www.heartlandwines.com.au

WINERIES

KETTLE VALLEY

What started out as a hobby for friends Bob Ferguson and Tim Watts became an obsession when they were granted the third winery licence on the Naramata Bench. Their first blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay set the tone for the Kettle Valley style of intense full bodied reds and whites, and they constantly challenge the assumptions about what cannot thrive on the versatile Naramata terroir. Think of this stop on the TDM Reserva tour as tasting, touring and talking.

Read more in TDM’s words.

POPLAR GROVE

Founded in 1993, Poplar Grove was one of the original 5 wineries on the Naramata Bench. Ian Sutherland built his reputation starting with just 2 and a half acres, and his 1995 Cabernet Franc quickly established Poplar Grove on the world scene. Now including over 110 acres of prime property, the focus has expanded to include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot and a signature blend called The Legacy. Savor the wines, enjoy food from the excellent kitchen and revel in some unforgettable winemaking stories. Read more.

LA FRENZ

Since transplanting themselves from the Australian wine industry, Jeff and Niva Martin have put their small “cult” winery on the world map by winning major awards. In 2011, La Frenz won the most gold medals of any winery at the All Canadian Wine Championships and the Northwest Wine Summit. Jeff looks after the vineyards, Niva runs the tasting room – and they promise a tasting to remember that includes tasting your way through much of the portfolio.

Mulligan Stew May 17th

hello

Three – count em – THREE wonderful artists guesting on one Stew.

The first is a name and voice very familiar to the CKUA audience
David Ward is producing next week’s Bob Fest in Calgary.
It’s the annual celebration  of Bob Dylan’s Birthday.

Bob Dylan’s birthday (May 24th, 1941) is celebrated around the world, and this year Dylan enthusiasts in Calgary will have two opportunities to gather and revel in the music of the Bard from Hibbing, Minnesota.
  Saturday, May 24th, at 9pm
Ironwood Stage & Grill will host the annual Birthday Bash
 Sunday, May 25th, at 2pm
National Music Centre will host Blood On The Tracks: Reassembled and Reimagined
The weekend begins with the 8th Annual Bob Dylan Birthday Bash Saturday, May 24th, at 9pm at the Ironwood Stage & Grill.

Longtime Dylan fan Patrick McIntyre (proprietor of the Ironwood) has provided a home for the annual BobFest since 2007 by inviting local singers and instrumentalists to take to the stage and put their own particular spin on songs both familiar and obscure from the Bob Dylan Songbook.
Among the many performers joining bandleader Steve Pineo this time around will be local favourites Tom Phillips and Tim Williams.
The following afternoon, ten musicians will fill the stage at the National Music Center and engage Dylan enthusiasts with their interpretation of the songs that comprise the album Blood On The Tracks.
Join singers J.R. Shore, Ruth Purves-Smith, Clea Roddick, Conrad Walz, and David Ward as they reassemble and reimagine Tangled Up In Blue, Idiot Wind, Shelter From The Storm, and nine other songs that Dylan wrote for his beloved 1974 classic.

Next Guest is Royal Wood
Here’s a primer on what we’ll be talking about from Royals own website

Royal WoodWhen I was a child music flowed through me. Art sprang forth whether I asked for it or not. Sadness seemed to drip from my finger tips and find a page to exhale onto – always leaving me joyful. As if the exorcism had removed the demons. Sadly though, during the writing and creation of We Were Born To Glory, I somehow got caught up in the “business” of the music business. I temporarily forgot the joy that came from creation for creation’s sake. As a result I created an album, though successful, that left me empty with ultimately no joy to fill the space. At the same time too my marriage was dissolving in front of me and suddenly the two main bedrocks of my foundation washed away. I was adrift. Thankfully though I was able to move to a small cottage in rural Ireland, remove the noise, quiet my surroundings and finally hear my inner voice again. The all knowing compass spoke and soon the veil lifted. I made art again. Music flowed. Answers were found and puzzles solved. Sarah and I decided to separate, but remain loving friends and in each other’s corner.
Purpose is the ultimate driver. It is indeed what now gets me out of bed in the morning. I want to make art. I want to create. I want to perform music. I want to learn. I want to love. I want to be healthy. I want to leave a legacy for upcoming generations that gives them a brighter future and not impede their chance of survival. I want to be the change. I want…
How will I accomplish all of these “wants” though? The ancient proverb “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” is the answer. The key is not to ask how, but simple to ask for what you want and to move. Take action and attempt to get there. Somewhere along the way I will look back and realize not only did I reach the island, but I swam a great distance and grew in the process.
To that end, I thought I would let you know what I am doing these days. I am living in TO, but I have also taken over my parents farmland and moved to the countryside near Peterborough as well. In honour of “being the change” I am most excited to tell you that I also partnered with an organic collective called Castanea. They will begin planting organic crops and running their collective on the land this spring. I am in the early stages of building my recording studio now called “The Farm” on the property. It should be up and running by the end of the year. I am also in the progress of attempting to move the property to off grid. It’s a long term dream, but I am moving steadily ahead.
The new album “The Burning Bright” is obviously out and taking on a life of it’s own. I’ll be shooting another video soon. I’ll be touring Canada and Europe this year, with plans of US shows as well to be announced soon. I am also producing a young Canadian artist named Peter Katz this April with my production pal Bill Lefler.
Of course I also continue to study wine, compose and arrange music, create art in various forms both visual and the written word that will someday find their way out into the world, spend time with my loved ones and ever growing family, and most importantly, dream big.
“Purpose”, you are a mighty force.

And then..in an interview conducted while he was RIDING AROUND EDMONTON ON HIS SISTERS BIKE..is native son Michael Rault.
He has a new EP coming called Living Daylight.
Weekend dates below..

Toronto based artist from Edmonton, Michael Rault announces new album, Living Daylight, out June 24 on Pirates Blend. Watch the “summer road tripping” video for the infectious album track “Lost Something” today courtesy of Noisey. Canadian tour dates commence today with more to be announced very soon.

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR “LOST SOMETHING” VIA NOISEY HERE
“a bubbly summer coasting song of riding with the windows down, high-fives and good times” Noisey

The history of rock n roll meets the future of power pop in Toronto-based Michael Rault, singer, guitarist, and frontman of the band that shares his name. With roots in punk and rhythm and blues, Rault mixes the classic pop rock influences of The Kinks and The Beatles with the psych-pop sounds of Os Mutantes, creating a sophisticated combination loaded with hooks. The key to Michael Rault’s music is in its simplicity: the expert mix of melody and momentum, his band’s skilled musicianship, and Rault’s focused song-writing all combine in perfectly compact resonance.

Rault recently moved from Edmonton to Toronto, where his new EP came to fruition. Set for release June 24 on Pirates Blend RecordsLiving Daylight, explores feelings of leaving home and trying to make your way in a new city. Back in Edmonton as a teenager, Rault got his start in punk bands before turning to the rhythm and blues masters for inspiration, honing his guitar work and songwriting prowess in the process. Having proved that he can hold his own ground alongside any Diddley-beat revivalist, Rault then set his eyes on the future, creating something that is equally indebted to the British Invasion and classic psych-pop, while fitting in nicely with new artists like Mikal CroninThe Fresh and Onlys, and King Tuff. Rault has an insane knack for melody and a very deep understanding of music history, something he has in common with Edmonton contemporaries like Mac DeMarcoTravis BretzerSean Nicholas Savage and Homeshake.

“This EP is a nice stepping stone on the way to some even more interesting recordings in the future,” says Rault. “I feel like there are no longer any rules or boundaries in my mind as to what I can or can’t do in the studio or at shows. Whatever I can dream up is my style, and only until I get on to the next thing. I’m more excited about making music right now than I ever have been.”

may17thLiving Daylight was performed and recorded by Rault and his cousin Rene Wilson (Mint Recording Artist Renny Wilson) in Edmonton in spring 2013, between bedrooms and Riverdale Recorders studios. With Rault back in his hometown, he and his cousin were able to focus on perfecting the composition and sound of every track – and it shows. Everything about Rault’s recordings sounds at once classic and contemporary: fuzzed out guitars intersect swirling organs and taut rhythmic patterns, with subtly textured vocals soaring over undeniable hooks. Songs like the infectious “Lost Something” blend all the hallmarks of quintessential pop rock in perfect measurements, with its timeless chorus marrying psychedelic ambience and punk rock economy together in one flawless package. On “Too All My Friends” (named after one of his childhood friend’s misspelled tattoos), Rault effortlessly imbues the glint of 60s production into a powerful pop anthem.
As the current ascension in Michael Rault’s ever-evolving musical narrative, Living Daylight has all the ingredients of a contemporary classic, with a forward-thinking approach to ideas that transcend time and place.

Tasting Room Radio B_BANNER2     Sam Roberts says he learns about wine through Volume. The Wine Diva says this list is all about BC’s best. THE SHOW

The Sam Roberts Band released their new album Lo-Fantasy in February. Sam Roberts  is a huge wine fan. When Jason Priestley and I were shooting HollywoodandVinesTV in Ribera del Duero Spain, we were deep into the Neo cellar and we found a barrel signed by Sam Roberts. I’ve been waiting 5 years to ask him how that barrel came to be.

Sam Roberts

Sam Roberts

Sam’s parents moved from South Africa to Montreal where Sam was born months later. He attended McGill and then hustled the music scene through various bands until he found the right song and the right band. The song was “Brother Down” and the band became The Sam Roberts Band. This was fun!!  Enjoy.   www.samrobertsband.com   [divider] Daenna van Mulligen presents her best of BC Wine List. The Diva takes great care to taste and recommend these wines.

Richard Parsons

A year ago I had the pleasure of sitting and talking with retired business executive Richard Parsons about his Italian Winery. Neither one of us would have any idea that today Richard is truly back in the spotlight..as the new CEO of The LA Clippers. The team is in the middle of a huge press storm and the NBA Playoffs. It takes a very solid individual to step into that mess and make it better. I thought you’d like to get a sense of the man, his life and his wine. Former Citigroup Inc.  Chairman Richard Parsons, whose career in banking and media saw him at the helm of the industries’ biggest companies, is betting he can make money in retirement in the wine-rich Tuscan hills. Twelve years after buying Il Palazzone, a Montalcino vineyard perched on the ancient trail to Rome, Parsons is getting serious about winemaking, turning a hobby into a business. He’s built a new cellar he inaugurated with this year’s harvest and plans to double production of his finest wine, Brunello, turning Il Palazzone into a profitable activity within five years. Despite its name, il Palazzone, or “the big palace” is actually quite a small winery making less than 1,000 cases of Brunello di Montalcino annually. While the estate is roughly 20 acres, the vineyard area authorized for the production of Brunello di Montalcino is a mere 10 acres. Il Palazzone recently completed construction of a new cellar, designed to blend beautifully into the landscape and minimize its carbon footprint. While the cellar utilizes the best of modern technology, the vineyard still creates its Brunello in the traditional method by aging the wine in large, Slavonian oak barrels for nearly four years. Great story this.

Hendry vineyard manager Mike Hendry walks and talks the history of Napa.
The Hendry family has been farming the same 114 acre vineyard situated in the hills northwest of Napa since 1939. This location allows  them to grow 10 different varietals distributed among 47 vineyard blocks.
Through the subtle use of oak and restraint in ripeness, Hendry wines are crafted to perfectly highlight the terroir of the vineyard.
Their Zinfandels are legendary!!

May 3rd, 2014 – New Zealand

hello

Tasting Room Radio B_BANNER2 The first of several One Hour Specials recorded  in March during a two week wine blitz through New Zealand’s wine regions,  with special interest in their amazing sustainability programs. In this special we start in Auckland and conclude in Hawkes Bay.

THE SHOW

The opportunity was just too good to pass up. For a number of years I’ve been interviewing NZ winemakers as they passed through Canada. The meetings were great but I had no sense of the land. Where these wines were grown and under what conditions. Kiwi’s kept referring to Gimblett Gravels, a place called Nelson, Central Otago and Waiheke Island. I very much wanted to “get it”. To complete my understanding of what went into the astounding success of New Zealand wines – in Canada and around the World.

Map of NZ

Map of NZ

The invite from Wines of New Zealand  to tour the country was Waaaay to good to pass up. 94% of all NZ wines are farmed under sustainable practices. It’s not so much a program as a way of life. New Zealanders are all about being green. Just a note:  I seem to have done enough interviews for at least 2 other specials. They’ll be coming over the next month and a half.

Beautiful hilltop vineyard, wonderful Bistro. Rob’s retired and works 7 days a week. Connie’s from Montreal. Cooks like her Mom. Staying on Waiheke Island..just off the coast from Auckland..we visit Mike Spratt at Destiny Bay, maker of only three wines.  three Bordeaux influenced red blends..one of which,  Magna Praemia,  is the most expensive wine in NZ.  Mike, his scientist wife Ann and winemaking son Sean lead a stellar team.  http://www.destinybaywine.com/ In between both those Waiheke island wineries we talk to our “host” Phillip Manson, the man in charge of New Zealand’s Sustainability efforts.
Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island

He’s proud of New Zealand’s reputation. So he should be. www.nzwine.com Before we leave the dormant volcanoes of beautiful Auckland we visit just one more winery. The most awarded winery in all NZ – Villa Maria!!  www.villamaria.co.nz Sir George Fistonich has spent five decades at the forefront of New Zealand’s wine industry that he helped develop. As an icon of the New Zealand wine industry, Villa Maria is known for bold and industry-changing moves such as moving to 100% screw cap through to the emphasis on sustainable practices in every area of the family owned company. Villa Maria Estate was named the supreme winner at the New Zealand Sustainable Business Network awards in November 2012

We start with David Roper/Winemaker. Then Fabian Yukich, in charge of wineries and vineyards and finally, the man himself, Sir George Fistonich.      [divider] Hawkes Bay is a short flight from Auckland. http://www.hawkesbaynz.com/ Hawke’s Bay’s long, hot summers and cool winters offer the best weather for growing grapes. The climate is dry and temperate. Hawke’s Bay is renowned for its horticulture with large orchards and vineyards on the plains.   Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s warmest, driest regions and this has made it one of the country’s leading producers of wine; notably red wines – cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah – but also with some quite stunning whites.   They are working on being the Syrah Capitol of NZ.  www.winehawkesbay.co.nz/ [divider] Pask Winemaker and Managing Director Kate Radburnd is one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed winemakers. She commands an international reputation for her extensive record of award winning wines and her vision and contribution to the industry. Kate holds the role of Deputy Chair of the Wine Institute of New Zealand, has been a Director of the Wine Institute of New Zealand and New Zealand Winegrowers since 1999, and is Chair of Judges at New Zealand’s oldest wine competition, the New Zealand Royal Easter Show Wine Awards. Kate has also been instrumental in the development of the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand program and led Pask to be among the first group of wineries in the country to secure ISO environmental accreditation.

hello

What the Heck is going on in Okanagan Falls?

Black Hills winemaker Graham Pierce pours a Note Bene Vertical.

THE SHOW

Black Hills. Home of Note Bene

Black Hills. Home of Note Bene

One of the most successful releases – each and every year – is the Bordeaux  blend Note Bene from Black Hills Estate in the South Okanagan.
Graham Pierce

Graham Pierce

To celebrate the release of their 2012..winemaker Graham Pierce came into Vancouver and poured a rare vertical of this sensational wine from 2007 to 2012.
The 2007 stands out because it was the last release under Senka Tennant but also the year that Graham studied her techniques to eventually take over from  the departing Senka.
As we tasted through 2008/09/10/11 and the 2012 you could smell and taste Graham’s style slowly taking over.
They all had slightly different tones and tastes but still that Note Bene signature came through.
Cassis. Dark fruit, Spice, Oak on the nose.
Blackberries, Coffee, Blueberries and Toasted Oak in the mouth.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Can Franc  and Merlot.  And as always a wonderful note of Cigar Box.

Note BeneThe serious challenge for anyone buying this wine is to hold on to it for at least a couple of years.
Today’s wine buyer has been schooled to buy and drink..cellaring presents all kinds of problems..such as keeping your hands off the juice.
Note Bene is well worth the wait..

Between Penticton and Oliver lies the town  of Okanagan Falls.
Surrounded by Skaha and Vaseux Lakes..with soils perhaps like no other region.
Many seemed to blow through this small town on your way somewhere else but not anymore.
Many of the wineries listed below have added tasting rooms and bistros.
The OK Falls Winery Assn has helped raise the profile of this region to watch.
Speaking as one voice , these 12 wineries are raising their profiles and their wines to a whole other level. www.ofwa.ca
Here’s the line of this very interesting mix of wineries.
A mixture of old school and hard charging new labels..what they have in common is a hard passion to succeed and OK Falls.
