THE SHOW

It’s the annual Colour BC VQA Fall Release Tasting at the Vancouver Convention Centre
Take a BC wine journey through the growing wine regions of British Columbia!
The largest annual tasting of BC VQA wines in Vancouver, this event hosted 75 BC wineries, showcasing more than 300 BC VQA wines.
We are so pleased to present the talented people behind the wines. We hope you have fun as you discover their new fall releases.
There was ONE other question that I asked most of the people below.
ARE YOU CURRENTLY SHIPPING YOUR WINES TO THE REST OF CANADA?
Some very surprising comments came back my way.
For years many of these same wineries were in denial.
Either ducked or wouldn’t answer the question
NOT ANY MORE!!

He joins us from Kelowna.

Winefest offering this year’s visitors a Mulligan

Opens minds, full stomachs and glasses of Google research are among Terry Tips for a terrific time at the Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival.
Terry David Mulligan, a prominent Vancouver TV and radio show host and author, pours years of viticultural smarts into his popular Tasting Room radio show — and Hollywood & Vines TV show shared with fellow actor and corkhead Jason Priestley.
Mulligan joins Troy Townsin of CBC’s Time For Wine, and sommelier-author Treve Ring during a lively panel discussion at Rocky Creek Winery Sept. 14.
Mulligan can’t wait.
“I’ve been bored out of my mind with various panels, but I intend this hour will be as entertaining as possible,” he told the News Leader Pictorial, while sipping pinot noir from Cowichan’s Unsworth Winery.
It and Rocky Creek are just two of a dozen valley wineries — plus various bistros — tapping barrels and starting ovens for the Sept. 7 to 15 cork-and-fork festival launched by Saturday’s team-theme Grape Stomp! at Cowichan Exhibition grounds.
Cowichan’s festival is new to Mulligan — an actor, DJ and former host of Good Rockin’ Tonight — who has visited the Warm Land, but not as a globetrotting wine critic.
“I truly have no expectations of the Cowichan Valley. I’m going over to learn, and find out more about the area.
“It’s time for me to get caught up with everyone in Cowichan,” he said of vino reporting planned for The Tasting Room and beyond.
“Not everyone will get a rave review — I’ll talk about the wines that interest me; they all have to find their own voice. Wines that should be encouraged, I’ll encourage.”
Mulligan also encouraged festival goers to plan routes to maximize tasting time.
“You can’t do everything, so make your choices and live with them. Ask around and do some Googling about (for example) who Unsworth is, and why they’re making a sensational pinot.
“Go to shows like mine and do some due diligence, and ask which wines are making headlines,” suggested Mulligan.
“Also, make a short list and try and take your time; if you just blaze through the festival, you won’t remember anything. Eat before you go, too.”
But for Mulligan, festivals offer more than vino.
“I’ll also looking forward to checking out the culinary side of Cowichan. I know great food when I taste it, and great food that pairs with wine.”
That fare will be served by local eateries including the Stone Soup Inn, Thistles Cafe, the Teafarm, La Pommerie, Satellite Bar & Grille, Pioneer House, and Vinoteca during a chalice of chef’s dinners, many back ed by live music and art exhibits.
A highlight meal will be the 150-seat Cowichan Long Table Dinner by the Island Chefs’ Collaborative at Dragonfly Farms on Sept. 8, marking the IFF’s debut pairing with the Cowichan Wineries Co-operative.
That’s where products by Blue Grouse, Averill Creek, Vignetti Zanatta, Rocky Creek, Silverside, and Damali wineries, plus Merridale Ciderworks, can be tried during the farm-to-table event.
Meanwhile, Rocky Creek’s panel will tap key questions.
“We’ll ask ‘ What grape will lead the island in the future?’” year-round rosé fan Mulligan explained.
“The region that’s successful will have something that gets people’s attention.
“In Oregon, it’s pinot noir. Right now, everyone’s just guessing. I think it might be pinot noir, or a blend, because you make can a lot of everything.”
Also on deck: What do island wineries want to be known for? What kind of destination are they?
Mulligan’s experienced a barrel of wineries and festivals.
“One of my favourites is Cornucopia in Whistler in November, because it’s smaller venues and contained — you can walk from event to event.
“The other one is The Playhouse, Vancouver’s wine festival.”
Mulligan urged Cowichan’s 16 or so wineries to bottle locally but think provincially — even globally.
“Lots of wineries sell out locally, but some equate that to having great wines, but if they bring that wine to Victoria, Vancouver, or Calgary there may be a hard reality coming their way.
“You can’t just be heroes in your own ball park, you have to expand outside your region.”
But Mulligan was miffed at Prohibition-type barriers to bringing wines across provincial boundaries.
“It gets hairy with Tourism B.C. saying ‘Come to wine country’, and the Alberta government saying ‘You can’t just bring wine in from B.C.’
“It’s a lousy cash grab (by government). But finally, wineries are realizing they’ve cowed since 1928 — no one has ever been charged.
“It’s all phoney (threats), and the wineries are standing up and shipping. Their (bureaucrats’) bluff has been called.”

Tasting Room Radio AB August 14th 2013

hello

Tasting Room Radio AB_BANNER

It’s the annual “Let’s go fishing and drink wine” summer vacation special.

This year it’s at the beautiful Skitchine Lodge located on the Bonaparte Plateau north of Kamloops. Guests include Chef Mark Filatow, Master of Wine Rhys Pender, Orofino winemaker and co-owner John Weber, my friend Mary Corbett.
Plus from the Skitchine Chef Jens Larson, Mark and Tania Lee.
Also a visit to the first winery in Kamloops – Harpers Trail.
The Wine Diva returns with her memories of a summer visit to the wines regions of France and 2 days in Paris.
THE SHOW
Skitchine Lodge
For the third year in a row I felt the overwhelming need to go fishing and talk food and wine with the right mix of friends.

This year, North of Kamloops to Skitchine Lodge.
Bottom Line – 15 lakes – only ever 14 guests.
Lots of room and lots of lakes – to yourself.

From the Skitchine – Mark and Tania Lee, Managers and hand holders.
They help guests adjust to no cell or data service. Withdrawal is painful.
They answer all the questions we have plus they work with Chef Jens Larson on breakfast and dinner service.
Mark and Tania fill us in on how Skitchine came to be.
How could 15 lakes and miles of forest be protected in pristine condition?
Does each lake have its own character?
What’s the shortest/longest walk between lakes?
Catch and Release?
What flies to fish with?
Who picks the wines for the Lodge cellar?
We sit down on the dock with Chef Jens Larson about where he’s cooked previously (surprising kitchens) and how he gathers all his ingredients because there are no stores for miles. Jens also talks about the five courses he cooked for us.
Mary Corbett and Graeme Dales are good friends and it was they who invited us to Skitchine. Mary guests. (Graeme was fighting a bug in bed.)

Then we head down to the fireplace room on the docks to talk food, wine and fishing with
Chef Mark Filatow – current  winner of the Gold Medal Plates competition  in BC. He’s the force behind Waterfront Bistro in Kelowna. His menu highlights include Tomahawk Chops done on a open fire.

Rhys Pender
is one of a select few Master of Wine in Canada. He and his lovely wife are also owners/winemakers at Little Farm Winery in Cawston in the Similkameen Valley in the South Okanagan. His next door neighbour is our third guest John Weber from Orofino. John’s been on all three trips.
The general rule of thumb for wines consumed was..whattdayagot?
Here’s a photo with all the bottles displayed. It was such fun.

Our thanks go out to Mary, Graeme, Jens, Mark and, of course, Tania.
Those lakes and the resort are not just for fishing..they’re also for Peace of Mind.

Harper’s Trail
We are pleased to introduce you to Harper’s Trail wines, the first wines made from vineyards in Kamloops, BC. They are crushed in Summerland, at Okanagan Crush Pad.

Named for the cattle drive trail of pioneer rancher Thaddeus Harper, and tucked into the city outskirts on the bank of the South Thompson River, Ed and Vicki Collett‘s vineyard sits among rolling hills of sage and grass, home to bighorn sheep, bears, and myriad birds. The backdrop of limestone, hoodoos, and a natural spring in the vineyard contribute to the biodiversity of this rare place.

IF….IF Harper’s Trail can make this location work then the entire bench they’re surrounded by could/should one day become a brand new wine region in BC.
With the help of consultant Michael Bartier and the growing team..the sky’s the limit.
There’s now a new reason to drive through Kamloops.

The Wine Diva

Daenna van Mulligen – The Wine Diva – returns from a long planned return to the wine regions of France and 2 days in Paris, where she once lived.
If you have ever dreamt of travelling through France and its wine regions, this segment would be a great primer. Daenna touches on wineries and regions  that impressed. You can tell she liked Paris and the rose’ they poured at every table.
STORIES WE’RE WORKING ON
