Zack Lupetin

Our guest is Zack Lupetin..leader of this wild musical collective.  http://www.dustbowlrevival.com/   @dustbowlrevival
“In a city like Los Angeles, home to musical stars in nearly every known genre, handing out the Best Live Band title is not easy. But the free-thinking local collective Dustbowl Revival’s upbeat, old-school, All-American sonic safaris exemplify everything shows should be: hot, spontaneous, engaging and, best of all, a pleasure to hear.” — LA WEEKLY

The Dustbowl RevivalThe Dustbowl Revival is a Venice, California-based collective that merges old school bluegrass, gospel, pre-war blues and the hot swing of New Orleans to form a spicy roots cocktail. Known for their roaring live sets, Dustbowl bravely brings together many styles of traditional American music. Some call it string band-brass band mash up. Maybe it’s called Swing grass or good old Americana. Imagine Old Crow Medicine Show teaming up with Louis Armstrong’s Hot Fives and Sevens, or Bob Dylan and The Band jamming with Benny Goodman and his orchestra in 1938. It’s infectious, joyous music – a youthful take on time-worn American traditions.

Tell them you heard them on #mulligan stew! @dustbowlrevival

Harry Manx
We talk spirituality..living in India..playing for bruce springsteen..how the blues influences his music..
Lots of cool stuff..
[divider]
H_Manx_2Harry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, which has become Harry’s signature instrument.
Harry played slide guitar for many years before meeting Bhatt in Rajasthan,in fact he had been living in another part of India for many years already, but he started at the beginning under Bhatt’s tutelage, unlearning most of what he knew about playing a slide instrument. He learned Eastern scales and eventually ragas, deceptively complex and regimented musical patterns that form the basis of Indian composition. Learning the voicings of Indian music is a subtle art that comes with time. Harry spent most of twelve years in India learning that. It was later on that Harry decided to explore the connection between Indian ragas and blues scales which eventually led to the Indo-blues hybrid that has become his style.
Born on the Isle of Man, Manx immigrated to Ontario with his parents when he was a child. He started working with bands as a ‘roadie’ at age 15 and gradually worked his way up to becoming the regular sound man at the well-known El Mocambo (blues) club in Toronto. There he worked with a slew of blues legends. Harry admits that blues is still at the heart of much of his work. “I’ve always had one foot in the blues from those days … what I got from those artists is a groove. That’s what I’m particularly interested in is the groove, and that’s the way I play blues”. “I went to Europe when I was 20 and started making money as a busker,” recalls Manx. “I’ve worked mostly as a musician since then, though I did some theatre work for a while. I was a one-man band with a drums and a cymbals for a time too. It was really a lot of fun”
Manx’s time in India has imbued his music with an intangible spiritual quality. “the song reveals who you are, it’s the vehicle for your message, your inspirational ideas or your story,” explained Manx. “Like many people I’m interested in my own development as a person and that’s represented in my songs, I’m searching for truth through art and spirituality. My songs are a synthesis of everything I’ve absorbed, all my experiences and I share that. I’m glad that it means something to people.”

“Indian music moves a person inward,” he explains. “It’s traditionally used in religious ceremonies and during meditations because it puts you into this whole other place (now, here). But Western music has the ability to move you outward, into celebration and dance. There are some ragas that sound bluesy, and there are ways to bend strings while playing blues that sound Indian. I may be forcing the relationship between the two musical cultures, but I keep thinking they were made for each other. That leads me to more and more experimentation. The journey has been great so far.” Manx is a prolific artist, releasing 12 albums in a 12 year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007.
His most recent original release, “Om Suite Ohm” was voted by the Montreal daily La Presse as one of only 4 CDs to watch for in 2013. Guitar Player Magazine called it “his most fully realized work to date”. Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, add a sprinkle of gospel and throw in some compelling grooves. It’s a recipe that goes down easy and leaves you hungry for more.

February 21st, 2015 – Argentina in an hour!

hello

Part 1Tasting Room Radio B_BANNER2

10 days touring Argentina’s wine regions!
A Regional Tasting in Buenos Aires. The tasting and spitting  through the vineyards in Patagonia and Mendoza.
along the way we ate perhaps,  a whole cow!
These are the tour highlights Part One.  www.winesofargentina.org

THE SHOW
Spectacular Argentina

Spectacular Argentina

This was a whole bunch of fun. Yes there were 32 wineries and over 300 wines tasted but what really made it fun was the attitude and character of the Argentines themselves.
Really fine people who do everything with passion.
Located in the Southern Cone of the American Continent, with a population of 42 million inhabitants and a territory that isfour times larger than France, Argentina is one of the world’s nature reserves. Privileged with outstanding natural richness and extraordinarily diverse landscapes, Argentina boasts high mountains and plains, lush vegetation and extreme deserts, forests and steppes, glaciers and waterfalls.
Argentina-vines-meet-the-Andes

Argentina-vines-meet-the-Andes

This wealth of natural ecosystems includes vast, highly productive grape growing regions stretching at the foot of the Andean strip, to the West of the country, from latitude 22° south to latitude 42° south. The cultivated area covers more than 538,071 acres.
It is in this context, and in the course of five centuries, that Argentina has developed such an extraordinary wine industry. The altitude, the wide range of temperatures, the local know-how, the new technologies and a deeply-rooted popular wine culture lend our wines their unique identity and quality.
www.winesofargentina.org
The objective over the two weeks was to taste and experience the stories of the people who made the wines.
Wall to Wall Malbec
We started with a tasting in downtown Buenos Aires. Featured were wine regions we wouldn’t get to, including Salta.

Haywire brings The Bub

Christine Coletta the co-owner of Okanagan Crush Pad and Haywire Bubble Winemaker Jordan Kubek bring The Bub to TRR.

Jordan Kubek - Haywire

Jordan Kubek – Haywire

Christine has been one of the true leaders in creating what has become the BC Wine industry. She also leads the team at Okanagan Crush Pad.

Pink Bub & Baby Bub

Pink Bub & Baby Bub

Born on a farm in Victoria, winemaker Jordan Kubek has been with Okanagan Crush Pad even before it had a roof (she was literally setting up tanks as the windows were being put in). Jordan’s passion is in sparkling wine and makes them in the traditional method and ancient method at Okanagan Crush Pad.

One of the most successful wines that came from Okanagan Crush Pad was Haywire.

They made really good wines right from the very beginning but things went CRAZY when they launched their bubble program, leading with THE BUB (named after Christine’s daughter)

The Bub 2012; 51% Pinot Noir, 49% Chardonnay.

Stony,  notes of slate, mineral characters, with surprising yeastiness considering the young time en tirage (10 months) so far. Closed with a crown cap , this wine bursts with crisp and elegant green-apple – a lively expression of Okanagan freshness. These bubbles will make you “smile” all on their own or drizzle extra virgin olive oil mixed with a drop or two of truffle oil on fresh salted popcorn.

PLUS..for a limited time $2.00 from every Haywire bottle will be donated to PADS (Pacific Assistance Dogs Society)

We also talk about Haywire Wild Ferment, Canyonview Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Chef Rob Feenie celebrates 10th anniversary winning Iron Chef America

ChefRobFeenie

ChefRobFeenie

He was the first Canadian to win Iron Chef  America and it changed his life overnight.

To celebrate beating Chef Morimoto, Cactus Club asked him to re-create the menu he cooked 10 years ago in New York City.

Along with wine pairings from Sommelier and Service Manager Sebastian LeGoff, Chef Rob Feenie  takes us into  a two part taste through his winning  menu.

Kurtis Kolt and BC Wines in NYC

Kurtis Kolt

Kurtis Kolt

Sommelier of the Year, Wine expert and new wine columnist for The Georgia Straight Kurtis Kolt convinced 8  BC wineries to head for New York City Feb 3  and pour for a select group of sommeliers,  wine writers, reviewers and bloggers.

Rather than wait for some government agency to – perhaps – organize such a trip, they took it upon themselves to organize a one day taste of wines that were available in the USA.

Participating in the first ever event were:

Painted Rock

Meyer Family Vineyards

Blue Mountain

Tantalus

Le Vieux Pin

La Stella

Laughing Stock

Black Hills

We talk to KK about how it all came together and some of the reactions in the room on the day.

Kurtis makes the point that because they knew absolutely nothing about BC wines, they were surprised to discover we not only made cool climate white wines but big assed Syrah and Bordeaux Blends.

Congrats to all concerned

Mulligan Stew February 14th 2015-Colin James Interview

hello

COLIN JAMES – HEARTS ON FIRE

colin james-hearts on fireFor his 16th studio album, Hearts On Fire, Colin James wanted to try something different.
“Making this record with my good friend Colin Linden and such a fantastic veteran rhythm section was an amazing experience,” “I loved working with the team that Colin Linden assembled for me in Nashville,” says James. “George Receli is the longtime drummer from Bob Dylan’s road band and Willie Weeks, the legendary bass player, who’s playing with Donny Hathaway I loved and Reese Wynans, the B3 and piano man of countless sessions.”

Colin and I talk about his long time friendship with Colin Linden.  (James was 13. Linden 16)
Colin also talks about why he wanted this release to have more down tempo/heartfelt songs..exactly the kind of song he loves live on stage.
Also reveals the lp should have perhaps been released before the 25 Live release.
Many of the songs co-written with Tom Wilson from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings
Colin James is an inductee in the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame. He has won six Juno Awards including “Male Vocalist of the Year” and the “Best Producer” award for his efforts with The Little Big Band.  He is the recipient of 17 Maple Blues Awards having most recently been honored in 2013 with “Entertainer of the Year”.

Mulligan Stew Feb 7th 2015- Dan Mangan Interview

hello

Dan-Mangan
Dan Mangan

Most certainly one of the musical highlights of last year was dan mangan and blacksmith performing live and in acapella    at the edmonton folk fest.
now with the release of club meds, they’ve turned a corner and are perhaps leaving some of the fans to make a choice.
follow the boys or find another happy quirky indy band.
Those bands are a dime  a dozen, so the choice is obvious..sign on for the long haul with dan and blacksmith because its going to be a very interesting and every changing ride.

 THE SHOW

 Rick Hansen
In 1973, at the age of 15, Rick Hansen’s life changed forever. He was involved in an accident that paralyzed him from the waist down. Coming to terms with his new life, he found inspiration from teachers, coaches and family, and set new goals from new dreams. Rick went on to become one of Canada’s most decorated Paralympic athletes.

Rick Hansen

Rick Hansen

In March 1985, Rick set off from Vancouver to wheel 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries on the Man In Motion World Tour to prove the potential of people with disabilities. His 26-month journey inspired an entire nation to believe anything is possible and moved thousands to make a difference.
After the Tour, he established the Rick Hansen Foundation to find a cure for spinal cord injuries and create more accessible communities.
Since 1988, the Foundation has leveraged the $26 million raised during the Tour into $280 million in investments towards spinal cord research, accessibility projects and quality of life initiatives.
I had the honour of being in the right place at the right time and minutely assisted Rick in living his dream.
We’ve always stayed in touch and when Rick asked if I’d like to go Sturgeon fishing on the Frazer River in BC I said YES!!
Rick is working tirelessly to preserve what was once a dying breed of fish.
Rick Hansen founded the FRSCS in 1997 in response to the declining population of the prehistoric white sturgeon – a species that had survived virtually unchanged for 65 million years.
The Society has built an award-winning monitoring and assessment program.
Check out the photos..The first sturgeon we caught was 6’5” and the second was 8’, over 300 lbs and perhaps 90 years old.
Shot for top of page
All caught,  tagged and released, of course.
My thanks to our guide for the day Yves Bisson from BC Sportfishing Group

Wine Diva

To mark the occasion she has selected 11 outstanding wines, each representing a year. There’s just one problem..she couldn’t stop herself and we all ended up with a slightly longer list.
Even though, they’ve all been tasted, reviewed and selected for this list by Daenna’s wine diva website, we only had the original 11 when we recorded. We’ll the rest up to you.
Congratulations to Daenna and her Barry for creating a home for wine lovers everywhere.
