Notes from Randall and Brad Lange

During the 1870’s  Great-Grandparents, Johann and Maria Lange, settled in Lodi and began a family farm growing non-irrigated watermelons with their son, Grandpa Albert. The farm grew year over year and by 1916 they had the  family’s first grape-ranch. It was on this ranch where their  dad, Harold, was born in 1920.

Grandpa and Dad’s farm expanded to include the River Ranch and the DeVries Road Ranch, where the family was raised. They  continued the tradition of working the vineyards and in 1974  decided to farm on our own. It was an exciting time for them because as they grew their business, their  family grew as well. Both married (Randall to Charlene and Brad to Susan) and by 1982 the fifth generation was here! Between our families we have five kids — Marissa, Aaron, Philip, Kendra and Joe.

As the kids grew up on the River Ranch they developed an appreciation for winegrowing by working summers and harvest . After college they each decided to come back to the family farm, so they took the next step and built a winery in 2006.

Today they all have unique responsibilities within the winery and viticulture teams, continuing their agricultural roots and growing their winery and wine brands. As fifth generation winegrowers they look forward to working with the sixth!

Back in the early 80’s there were only a handful of winegrowers planting Pinot Noir in Carneros. And yet, the Ferrer Family knew the key to a world-class méthode champenoise wine would be Pinot Noir.

The Gloria Ferrer winemaking team’s quest for perfection takes them to Champagne where they manage to acquire Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones.

Fifth-generation Sonoma County native, Christopher Silva is firmly rooted in Sonoma County agriculture. He was raised in a family of Petaluma dairy farmers, and nine years after graduating from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, he retired from practicing law to join St. Francis Winery. At the age of 38, he became President & CEO of St. Francis in 2003. He understands firsthand that a farmer’s footprint and intimate knowledge of the soil, microclimates and terroir of the region are the most important ingredients for healthy vines.

As President & CEO of St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, Chris has a specific focus: crafting world class Sonoma wine. St. Francis is best known for luscious, elegant, fruit driven Sonoma County Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and “Old Vines” Zinfandel.  Additionally, St. Francis was named “#1 Restaurant in America” by Open Table  in 2013 and 2015 in recognition of its farm to table wine and food pairings offered on site to Winery visitors each day.

St Urbans-Hof  –  Nik Weis  (Owner-GM)

and finally..from half a world away – in Germany’s Mosel Region comes Nik Weis Owner and GM of St. Urbans-Hof.

The winery St. Urbans-Hof is one of the most renowned wineries of the growing region Mosel and distinguishes itself by the particularity of owning best positions both on the Moselle and on the Saar. The Weis family who founded the winery in 1947, always focused on quality, which was almost a rarity, especially in the seventies and eighties. Authenticity is for Nik Weis, the grandson of the founder doing a very important feature. According Riesling is exclusively developed, the intervention in the vineyard and cellar are as gentle as possible. The nursery of the estate,  is among the most important in Europe.

It was a privilege to be poured some spectacular wines, including the Wiltinger Alte Reben 2014, which arrives in early spring, as well as some of the older vintages dating back to 1990 from Ockfener Bockstein, Laurentiuslay, Goldtropfchen  and a drop of Eiswein or two.

Chef David Hawksworth realized his culinary vision at his first  restaurant, in the very heart of downtown Vancouver. At Hawksworth Restaurant, which opened in 2011, he has created the ideal setting to deliver compelling contemporary Canadian cuisine; a demonstration of his European-trained technical ability, deep appreciation for local ingredients and an absolute insistence on only the very best quality. Winner of 2012 and 2013 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards Restaurant of the Year and Chef of the Year and for four consecutive years, Best Upscale Dining, as well as enRoute magazine’s top three Best New Restaurants, and Maclean’s magazine Restaurant of the Year; Hawksworth has anchored himself at the helm of the Vancouver – and Canadian – dining scene.

Every year about this time the wine regions of BC journey into Vancouver and pour their Spring wines.

It’s such a great time of the year.

The Naramata Bench always bring an organized and highly charged presence to their showcase pours.

Two of the very best winemakers in Canada joined us at the Roundhouse Radio Studios to walk us through selected wines from their portfolios.

Terravista Vineyards was started in 2008 by Bob and Senka Tennant. As a bit of history…Bob and Senka have been in the BC grape/wine industry for the past 16 years. Senka as winemaker and Bob as vineyard and business operator at their first business, Black Hills Estate Winery. In 2007, Black Hills was sold and Bob and Senka, not wanting to leave the industry, started looking for a small piece of property on which to establish a new vineyard and winery. Their idea was to concentrate on a couple of white grape varieties that had been attracting their interest.

After extensive searching, a piece of property was found on the Naramata Bench about halfway between Penticton and Naramata. The two chosen grape varieties for the home vineyard were Albarino and Verdejo – white grape varieties grown for 9 centuries in northwest Spain and Portugal. Over the next three years they were able to plant their vineyard as certified plant stock, sourced from California nurseries, became available. From these two varieties they are now producing the sensational white wine they call “FANDANGO“!

Grapes purchased form a select few dedicated growers allow for the production of their other white wine.  It is a delicious blend of the grape varieties Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne that they call “FIGARO”!

– Jeff was ready  to talk about the 2014 Desperation Hill Pinot Noir and his

2015 Alexandria.

 

Jeff Martin comes from the Riverina area of Australia, and has been involved with grape growing and wine making since early childhood. Even today, much of his extended family is heavily involved in the Australian wine industry.

Jeff became involved in the wine industry at the age of eighteen, when he was employed by renowned Australian producer McWilliams as a trainee winemaker at their half million case Beelbangera facility. Here, Jeff gained a wealth of experience in a wide range of styles: table wines, fortified wines, and even fine brandy distillation. In 1983, he received one of the first degrees in enology from Charles Sturt University. During his fourteen-year career with McWilliams, he worked with many of their vineyards, from the “cool climate” hilltops area in New South Wales to the famous “terra rosa” of Coonawarra in South Australia. In 1989, Jeff became the chief red winemaker for the McWilliams group, with his wines winning major awards at Australian wine shows.

Jeff now dedicates his experience to producing some totally unique wine styles at LA FRENZ. His talent is widely recognized and he still regularly judges at international wine shows in the U.S.

Harry McWatters – Time Wine Cellars/Evolve Vineyards buys Pen-Mar Theatre.

Harry McWatters, one of the original wine pioneers in the Okanagan  has purchased the former PenMar Theatre Complex in Penticton and will convert it into an urban winery.

Encore Vineyards Ltd. made the announcement Last week.

The urban winery will be the first of its kind in the South Okanagan. While the concept is new to the area, urban wineries are in place in the United States.

Once renovations to the building are completed, the winery will include a crush pad, barrel cellar, custom fermentation hall, lab, warehouse and administrative offices.

It will also have a tasting bar, small plates lounge, outdoor patio and wine retail shop.

While three of the four theatres will be converted for wine production, the fourth will be maintained as a 75-seat theatre space.

Here’s a quick catch-up with harry about how it all went down.

Let’s hope it’s the first of many..a concept whose time has come.

What is a garagiste? (gar-ah-jeest).  It started out in France (of course) where it was a derogatory phrase for those avante garde and crazy mavericks making wine in their garage and outside the highly regulated system. Gradually and grudgingly came the acknowledgement that something really interesting was happening with these small case lot artisan wines, and a movement was born.

They bring together the small guys. Wines produced from 100% Canadian grapes and under 2000 cases total production annually.

Nathan Fong is a chef and food specialist. He’s also the voice and face of BC food around the World.
We finish with a visit to the wines of Navarra with Jordi Vidal The managing director of  the region in the North of Spain.

Growing up just outside of Sacramento, California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Charles Smith began craving worldly travel at a young age due to his Welsh mother and French father. As soon as he had the chance, Charles decided to move to Denmark (for a lady friend he met in the states). While in Scandinavia, Charles spent the next nine years managing rock bands and concert tours throughout Europe, including the famed Danish duo, The Ravonettes. Wining and dining while on the road became a catalyst for his passion of wine, which ultimately triggered the career he has today.

In 1999, he moved back to the United States, specifically to the Pacific Northwest, opening a wine shop on Bainbridge Island, just across the Puget Sound from downtown Seattle. On a road trip in late 1999, he passed through the small town of Walla Walla and met a young Frenchman and winemaker. The two men discovered their common passion for great Syrah and Charles was eventually convinced to move to Walla Walla and make his own juice. In 2001, Charles released 330 cases of his first wine, the 1999 K Syrah. The Walla Walla Valley was now his home.

After a devastating freeze in 2004, Charles brought to life a label he had once in a dream: House Wine. Low and behold, the label concept had never been created or trademarked, so Charles launched the legendary brand before selling it to Precept Brands in 2006. That same year, Charles started a second brand, Charles Smith Wines. The brand was themed as “The Modernist Project,” which focuses on the way people generally consume wine today: immediately. The intent was (and still is) to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with true typicity of both the varietal and the vineyard.

A self-taught winemaker, Charles is a true artisan and a pioneer in the wine world. In 2008, K Vintners was recognized by Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the “Best New Wineries of the Last Ten Years,” and as “Winery of the Year” in their annual buying guide. In 2009 Food & Wine magazine awarded Charles “Winemaker of the Year” and in 2010 Seattle Magazine recognized Charles as their “Winemaker of the Year.”

NATHAN FONG

 

Nathan fong

Nathan has been an award-winning food stylist for print and film advertising since 1988 and is an internationally published food and travel journalist. He currently is celebrating his 27th year on Global BCTV News with his “Saturday Chefs” and “Fong on Food” segments, and has been a regular contributor to Canada’s CBC Radio One as well as a food columnist for The Vancouver Sun and regular contributor to Taste Magazine and EAT Magazine. In addition he has worked for Enroute, Bon Appetit, Fine Cooking, Cooking Light, Men’s Health UK, Cooking Light, and NUVO. He is a new regular contributor for International Taste & Travel Magazine.

His other television segments have included working with NBC’s The Today Show during the 2010 Winter Olympics, BBC and Sky Television, The Discovery Channel, both from England as well as the Food Network, USA and Canada, and New Zealand and Japan TV. He received the silver medal for the 2009 Food Network Challenge in the Superstar Foodstylist Competition.

In 2002 he was selected as one of the “Top 10 Food Trend-setters of the Future in Canada” by the Canadian national newspaper, The Globe and Mail Newspaper and was the recipient of the inaugural IACP/Julia Child Award of Excellence for food styling in 1998.

Nathan is also the food expert who represents the BC government around the World.

The wines of Navarra with Jordi Vidal

 

The general manager of Navarra Wines is Jordi Vidal. 

He takes us through some whites but focuses in on 4 great reds. 

A longer version of this interview will run in a couple of weeks. 

navarraThe region of Navarra in northern Spain is home to two cultural events whose
reputations have risen beyond popular to mythical, each year attracting the
rompish and pious in droves.

One of them, for contemplative Christian pilgrims, involves a long walk
across the top of Spain on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, beginning
in Navarra and ending in Galicia. The other, for thrill-seeking
crowd-lovers, involves a short run (with bulls) through the streets of the
city of Pamplona during the San Fermin festival, which Ernest Hemingway made
famous in his 1926 novel, “The Sun Also Rises.” Papa mentions wine from the
neighboring region of Rioja in the book, but surely he drank his share of
Navarra wines there too. And Lord knows, many a pilgrim has quaffed the
local wine after a long day on the trail in Navarra.

Although the wines of Navarra are not as well known as the Camino or
Pamplona, they should not be overlooked. What you get from Navarra is a
variety of solid wines at a lower cost than the wines from more-famous
Spanish locales.

‘What is our signature grape?’ is a question asked in many wine regions
around the world, but especially in those which compete with dominant
neighbours. It’s highly pertinent in Navarra, which fits into Rioja as one
piece of a jigsaw into another, but which is very much in the shadow of
Spain’s most powerful brand. In the list of 107 winners of last year’s Wines
from Spain Awards in London, just one still wine was from Navarra – and
that, tellingly, was from Bodegas Julián Chivite, a producer busily
distancing itself from the region that is its home. Indeed, the Chivite
story could be seen as a distillation of the problems Navarra faces in
achieving recognition on the world stage.

Vancouver is an important market for these artisans and what better way to get our attention than to set up a tasting event at Edible Canada at the Granville market.

Even though the room was jammed with friends and fans..we all got a chance to  taste our way through their coastal appellation and discover the diversity of their  exciting and dynamic small farms.

Each artisan has a story to tell..

Yes, there are actual Bartier Bros..it’s not a marketing ploy.

They grew up in the Okanagan but Don headed for the oil business in Alberta..but always kept his hand and his land in the mix.

Brother Michael  grew up in the Okanagan Valley.  After receiving a degree from the University of Victoria and working in wine sales on Vancouver Island for a few years, he and his wife Jodi returned home to the Okanagan. While looking for a “real job”, Michael accepted casual work in a winery cellar. And, since he’s still in the cellar, you could say he hasn’t found a real job yet.

Through on-the-job training, university extension, and distance learning at Washington State University and University of California Davis, Michael worked his way into a winemaking position.

 

Michael Bartier  quickly made a name for himself: first as a maker of white wines, earning two Canadian White Wine of the Year titles within three years, and then as a maker of red wines with several consecutive Lieutenant Governor’s awards for his red wines.

Michael enjoyed stints at Hawthorne Mountain Vineyards, Township 7, Okanagan Crush Pad  and Road 13, among others. Currently, he acts as consulting winemaker to what is surely the most coveted client list in North America among consulting winemakers.

 

Michael’s winemaking philosophy is simple:

  1. Plant the correct grapes on the correct site.
  2. Farm these well, thinking of the vineyard as a 200-year project.
  3. Take the good fruit into the cellar, and make sure the vineyard characters, not the winemaker’s manipulations, make it to the glass.
  4. Don’t try to copy Napa, or Bordeaux, or Burgundy; make Okanagan wine. These places make beautiful wines, but they’re different from what the Okanagan gives, and they don’t have the privilege of working with Okanagan grapes.
