Mulligan Stew April 13th 2024-Two Guests The Harpoonist and Bahamas

hello

Two friends drop by –

Shawn Hall – The Harpoonist. Currently a solo artist without long-time partner the Axe Murderer.

Shawn has a new album coming out later this summer but he’s about to drop his first single –Good People. Co-written and produced by Gordie Johnson from Big Sugar.

Good People was heard first time anywhere on last year’s Juno Couch at CKUA. Shawn joined musical forces with Diggin’ Roots and they rocked  The Couch.

This is a drive-through interview because the rest of it will he heard when the album drops later this summer.

Harpoonist is coming our way.  May 1 Wise Hall Vancouver. / May 2 Kelowna/ May 3 Nelson/ May 4 Calgary/ May 5 Lethbridge/May 7 Red Deer/ May 8 Edmonton.

Followed by Saskatoon/Regina/Winnipeg

The second guest is Afie Jurvanen – more famously known as Bahamas!

A fascinating artist and human. Never satisfied to remain in the same groove or attitude. What’s constant is his ability to create memorable songs,  surrounded by sonic texture that is his territory alone.

You know it’s him as soon as you hear the song.

He’ll be doing summer festivals and supporting his album Bootcut –  a heavily inspired classic Country record which has recently seen his catalogue surpass a billion streams. He was awarded a pile of gold/platinum/double platinum singles while attending the JUNOs this year. . Rolling Stone covered Bootcut saying that a Canadian indie rock kid made one of Nashville’s most Country records of the yearhttps://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/bahamas-bootcut-country-music-album-nashville-1234826097/

Oh..and he was featured on The Bachelor and released an album on Valentine’s day called Repackaged Love Songs.

And best of all,  he’s guesting on Mulligan Stew Saturday 4 Pacific / 5 Mtn  at CKUA RADIO  ckua.com

The complete interview can be found on Mulligan Stew Podcast and the video version on the terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel

Have a great weekend

Mulligan Stew April 6th 2024-Adrian Sutherland returns with Precious Diamonds (And hidden guest)

hello

Adrian is a Traditional Knowledge Keeper for the James Bay Cree of
Attawapiskat First Nation.
That may explain why he is such a fine songwriter and storyteller. As a singer, he’s been described by producer Colin Linden as “open” sonically and spiritually.
Adrian and Colin worked together on his first album When the Magic Hits. Although “together” doesn’t quite describe their situation. Colin was in his home studio in Nashville and Adrian was in the frozen Far North in James Bay working in an old shipping container that he had turned into a studio.
For Precious Diamonds, Adrian went south to Colin’s studio in Nashville and the resulting album is now out,  many months later.
Adrian takes us through a number of songs he lived,  wrote and sung. His battle to find his place in the music world. His pride in recording two songs in his native Mushkegowuk Cree.
As a surprise to Adrian, I had Colin Linden in the Zoom waiting room and he popped out at just the right time to congratulate his friend.
Adrian brought many stories and spoke his truth.
The whole interview can be found on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the Terry David Mulligan YouTube Channel.

Mulligan Stew March 30th 2024-Special Guest Nardwuar The Human Serviette

hello

Many years ago when I was hosting a CityTV  Show called Movie Television I arranged a set visit to a Snoop Dog movie being shot in Vancouver.
Nardwuar heard about it and asked – no insisted he come with me to interview Snoop.
Not an easy trick to pull when unit publicists are on their guard to make sure stars are safe and not hassled while they’re working.
I got Nard in and “the rest is history”
Snoop loved him and they did some wild interviews together. Snoop went on to be a megastar and Nardwuar became a world-famous YouTube sensation.
Millions now follow his antics.
Nardwuar was the first guest on the Mulligan Stew Podcast in 2018. Now that we’ve hit #300 this weekend we invited him back to get caught up.
The Stew interview will be quick and at pace. His pace.
The Mulligan Stew Podcast will be the whole thing. The whole freakin’ verbal battle.
We will also celebrate the birthdays of
Eric Clapton
Bill Withers
Tracey Chapman
Norah Jones

Mulligan Stew March 23rd 2024-A Spring STEW. Donor Driven with Summer Tires!!!

hello

As you may have heard, CKUA Radio is donor-supported. Closing in on 100 years. So when a donor steps up and supports us through a one-hour donation, we focus on what their message is and the music they like.

Tracey, the donor for the first hour sent forward a great wish list of tunes and artists and this fine message….

“Music was my constant companion growing up on a ranch West of Calgary. The story of a song is so very powerful and is something we carry with us for our entire lives. My husband  Kelvin and I appreciate the diversity of your network.   Saturdays (both day and nights) would not be the same without your station. We’ll be toasting you, along with all the other great CKUA donors and supporters.  Thanks for all you do.

well, thank you. much appreciated.

Here’s some of what Bar Open A wanted to hear.  Corb, Dire Straits, Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss, Van Morrison, McCartney & Wings. Bowie to start Hour Two.

I left room to Rodney Crowell, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Teskey Brothers.

A salute to Mike Campbell, leader of The Heartbreakers. His duet with Margo Price Light Me Up from Strays and co-writer of  Don Henley’s   Boys of Summer from First Aid Kit.

Mulligan Stew March 9th 2024-Spring Songs

hello

Fair to say we’re all watching for signs of Spring. Daylight saving Sunday morning is one.
We’ve got early flowers on Vancouver Island.
(What’s your first sign you watch for?)
I found lots of Spring songs. Most were ballads,  which is not exactly Saturday night music.
But I did find Bahamas, Vampire Weekend, 2 Beatle tracks, Ron Sexsmith, and Nathaniel Rateliff.

Live tracks from Van Morrison, Traffic, and Fred Eaglesmith.
There are great new songs from Kasey Musgrave and the amazing Teddy Swims.
Classic tracks from U2, Beach Boys, Clash, Johnny Cash, and Waterboys.
Two songs with the same title but very different songs – Deeper Well.
And because they’re being remembered on stages in Edmonton on Saturday night got some Linda Ronstadt and Everly Brothers.
We remember the release of John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan. Acoustic Nashville music right in the middle of the Beatles/Stones British Invasion.
We play Bob, Kris Kristofferson and Duke Robillard.

Just a last-minute addition to the weekend..

Grant Lawrence (The Smugglers, CBC Podcast, multiple best-selling books) is on the road with his Stories and Song LIve.

Grant and Joel Plaskett, Ashleigh Ball, played Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney by the Sea north of Victoria Thursday night.

Friday on Galiano Island and Saturday in Maple  Ridge with his love  Jill Barber added.

We met at The Five and Dime Diner across from the venue and talked for 20 or so minutes about EVERYTHING.

He told the story of two teens,  Grant and Nardwuar knocking on my front door Halloween night to ask questions about their favourite bands. I did the best I could and sent them along with extra promo records. Grant still has his.

We’ve been friends for 36 years. That’s the kind of podcast this will be.  Corey Woods (Associate Producer) shot it on video as well..so it’s also on terrydavidmulligan YouTube channel.

Do the clock thang!!!

Mulligan Stew March 2nd 2024 – Feels like a celebration – for Jeff Healey & March!

hello

It’s just a first step into another month but the possibilities are endless.

Warmth, Spring, longer days, lighter brighter footwear,  all things going green.

The Stew brings two hours of the promise  of March

And a remembrance of Jeff Healey, who died March 2, 2008. The day he lost his battle with cancer.

Blind almost at birth,  Jeff learned the secrets of playing guitar when he decided to lay his guitar down on his lap and literally attack the strings with all fingers.

Our guest is Roger Costa who’s the co-administrator and archivist of the Estate of Jeff Healey.

Currently, he’s producing See the Light. The Jeff Healey Story.   All these years later,  still an amazing story.

We surround the brief interview with new music from Dan Mangan, Corb Lund, and former Carolina Chocolate Drops bandmates Dom Flemons and Rhiannon Giddens.

We start The Stew with All Over Now by Rod Stewart and Faces and 2 hours later finish The Stew with the same guys. Both tracks live and both on vinyl.

Mulligan Stew Feb 24th 2024- Corb Lund and Wyatt C Louis Guest on a 90 minute Stew

hello

Corby brings new, acoustic, live off the floor music in his new album El Viejo (The Old One) in memory and tribute to his pal Ian Tyson.

Corby says that this album may be his best yet.  I completely agree.

He brings memories of Ian and their time together.  Corb also shares his thoughts on how his audiences are different depending on where he’s playing and how the songs of Alberta and cowboy life are received in the rest of Canada, The US and Japan.

For El Viejo Corb and the Hurtin’ Albertans played live, letting the songs reveal themselves. It was all captured by CKUA Alumni Scott Franchuk.

Corby describes it as “organic”.

We talked about his name “is that the name of the band?”

Touched on  his time with The Smalls and how this music connects to those days. “half urban/indy and half cowboys/ranchers”

We touched on Hearts on Fire Michael Barclay’s book on “6 years that changed Canadian music” which in its promo mentioned cowboys who used to play speed metal.

“the alt-country music in the late 90’s and 2000’s was littered with x-punks who suddenly discovered acoustic guitar.”

That’s Corb. The Poet Laureate of the Albertan people.

March 5 Corb is in Vancouver at The Orpheum

March 7 Grey Eagle Calgary

March 9 Midway Edmonton

March 22 Zankel Hall / Carnegie Hall NYC

May 28 Amsterdam

And multiple dates in Europe with The Dead South.

FYI – The MS Podcast is the whole conversation – it has some very interesting exchanges, opinions and storytelling.

And the video version can be seen and heard on the Terry david Mulligan YouTube Channel.

Hour Two in this week’s Stew is actually only 30 minutes long.

I’m going to be talking to singer/songwriter Wyatt C Louis.

Wyatt then takes the Cold Bones Stage at 6:30.

There is so much promise in his music and voice. His songs are thoughtful but best of all memorable.

The most interesting music I’ve heard in a while. See if you don’t agree.

Wyatt’s new album “Chandler” is released on May 24.  He’s touring with William Prince on

Monday, Feb 26 N/Jube

Tuesday, Feb 27 S/Jube

Wyatt is nehiyaw (Plains Cree)

From Montana First Nation in Maskwacis (Treaty 6 Territory)

By the way the C in Wyatt’s name is “Chandler” and thus the album title.
