Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew April 9th 2022- R&B Royalty in the House. Duke Robillard guests on The Stew

hello

He may have lost count but Duke “thinks” it’s his 37th album.

Judging from the reaction to They Called it Rhythm and Blues it may be his biggest hit yet.
Exec Produced by Holger Petersen. On Stony Plain Records
Right after the dark years of WW2 The World needed a spiritual lift. For 10 short years, It took the shape and sound of Jump Blues. It lead directly into mid-50s rock and roll. Spirits were lifted.
77 years later along comes to The Duke Robillard Band bringing joyous Jump Blues, again to lift spirits following two years of the pandemic.
For Duke – this music is exactly where he lives. Loves it, collects it, and brings the Joy of it.
Saturday night we’re going to Jump,  People!
Complete interview on Mulligan Stew Podcast after The Stew.

Mulligan Stew April 2nd 2022- Special Guest Valerie June

hello

It’s the first Stew of April 2022.

Let’s set the table.

The very special interview guest to finish off the show is Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/visionary Valerie June.

A Tennessee singer who mixes blues, gospel, and very modern soul.

Her latest album release is The Moon and Stars.

She and Carla Thomas are nominated in Best American Roots Song category at the  Grammy Awards   Sunday night, for Call me a Fool.

We wish her good Karma.

I love this quote from the Boston Herald

Call Me a Fool” is up for best American roots song because there’s no category for most transcendent modern soul ballad that feels like foundational gospel. For people who love Motown and the Alabama Shakes, Adele and Al Green, there’s Valerie June. For anyone who loves music, there’s Valerie June.

Mulligan Stew March 26th 2022- Special Guest Joni Mitchell

hello

Hello all –

Made a move from Nanoose Bay to Mill Bay. Still Vancouver island. Much closer to Leeroy!

During packing, I discovered a Joni Mitchell video from my MuchWest days. It’s a combination of clips from an interview I can’t even remember.

Joni Mitchell – MuchMusic Interview from Nathan Delphini on Vimeo.

But it’s filled with great quotes from Joni. I sound like I’ve inhaled helium.

Joni and I shared a band house in Regina. For 10 days.  Maybe 1966.

Then I hosted the first Greenpeace concert that Joni headlined in Vancouver. We would cross paths later at The Last Waltz.

This Saturday we’ll feature about 5 minutes of Joni clips with three tracks. She talks about  The Last Waltz, being incorrectly painted as a Canadian ex-pat in LA and the effect her songs have on people, and what that means to her.

Joni is also the guest on the Mulligan Stew Podcast Episode #200

That is the complete 15:00 interview.

Backstage at Los Angeles Fashion Week FW/19 Powered by Art Hearts Fashion at The Majestic Downtown on March 21, 2019 in Los Angeles, California.

We cover a lot of subjects and her music history.

Neither one of us mention an album or names a song.  So I’m not exactly sure when this was recorded. But I’m thinking 1982???

I mention she’s on a speaking tour and Joni talks about organizing a date with  Sting,  Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams. That speaks of The Human Rights Concerts (Live in New Jersey). That first concert was in 1986..so let’s call this interview mid-80s.

82’s Wild Things Run Fast

86’s Dog Eat Dog

88’s Chalk mark in a rainstorm

Being influenced by Steely Dan, Thomas Dolby, Willie Nelson, and Peter Gabriel.

It’s the perfect interview to celebrate Podcast 200.

(Thank You Elliott Garnier and Corey Wood for getting me there)

Mulligan Stew Feb 26th 2022- Special Guest Keb’Mo’

hello

I imagine my delight in having Keb’ Mo’  Zoom guest from his home in Nashville.

Keb’s new album is Good to be. It reflects the loss of his mother, returning home to his childhood home in Compton to remodel and freshen up the home he was brought up in and to reconnect with “the community”.

I never thought of Compton as a community because everything I read and heard only referenced the toughness of the streets and what could be a hard life. (NWA!!)

Keb references and hangs with The Compton Cowboys. Real-life people. Legends in  Compton history.

Keb also talks strongly about his thoughts on  Black History Month, working with Vince Gill, Old Crow Medicine Show, covering a song by his friend Bill Withers and more.

He answers the last question straight up – Did you find the blues or did the blues find you?

The complete audio and zoom interview drop right after The Stew.  Details  at www.mulliganstew.ca

It’s good to be a Keb’ Mo’ Fan. The music sticks to your heart and so does the man.

and Hey!  Check out the rest of the Stew.

Leonard Cohen, Steve Miller Band, The Dead, Robert Plant, A Fats Domino mini-festival for his birthday, Fruit Bats, Blue Rodeo, Lucinda Williams, Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin etcetera!!

Mulligan Stew Feb 19th 2022-Special Guest Paul Janeway

hello

Does anyone remember the moment a couple of years ago at the Edmonton Folk Fest when Paul Janeway left the Broken Bones blasting on stage and took his microphone into the audience and walked halfway up the hill?

He’d still be going but the mic stopped working.

It’s the kind of thing a firebrand preacher might do. That’s part of Paul’s childhood in Alabama.

He didn’t hear any popular music on the radio until his late teens because he and his family only listened to gospel stations.

Paul claims his gateway drug into secular music was early Tom Waits. Good Call.

We talk about the Edmonton Folk Fest, finding his voice, Paul talks about Oasis Pizza. That’s the routine they go through backstage just before they go on.

He talks about how he transforms into St Paul as he walks out to the mic and also fills us in on his best friend and co-founder/bassist  Jessie Philips.  Jessie’s hometown isn’t Birmingham, Alabama. It’s Fernie, BC.

Paul also proudly brings their new album  The Alien Coast. That’s where they all live – on The Gulf of Mexico coastline. Early explorers called it The Alien Coastline.

It’s not exactly the same R&B band you may have fallen for.  The groove is still there but the lyrics reference classic art and painters, dream state content, etc.

All this plus 2 hours of hand-picked tunes.

New tracks from John Mellencamp (with Bruce Springsteen), Bahamas,  Taj and Ry,  Matt Anderson, Walk off the Earth, Aaron Neville, next week’s guest Keb’ Mo’.

The complete Interview with Paul Janeway – with tracks – can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast. Also available on video. Details at www.mulliganstew.ca

FYI – Next weeks Podcast features Keb’ Mo’

Also, a donor asked for All along the Watchtower but didn’t specify which of the many artists who’ve covered Dylan’s classic.
So we played “a few” to start the show.
