Mulligan Stew August 29th – Daniel Wesley Interview & The Woman of Music…

hello

This weeks stew is the result of driving down the highway and me listing the many songs with women’s names in the title… some of my list has made it onto this weeks playlist!
I interview Daniel Wesley…
TwitterDaniel Wesley on Twitter
daniel wesleyIf making music isn’t about having fun, what’s the point in doing it? That philosophy sums up Daniel Wesley’s new album, I Am Your Man, the 33-year-old Vancouver-based singer/songwriter’s seventh studio offering. As he nears the end of his career’s first decade, what comes across most vividly on the record – as longtime fans will surely note – is the balance Wesley has found in his life both on and off stage.

Chef Rob Walker – The Bistro at Liquidity   www.liquiditywines.com

It was opening day at Liquidity Bistro..and still Chef Rob Walker took time to talk to us.

I was expecting a small 10 table bistro. What we all got was a sensational restaurant..with windows on three sides..and one of the best views in all of the Okanagan.

The culinary side of the Okanagan Experience is finally starting to show signs of catching up to the wines. Liquidity is a prime example.

He eventually moved to the valley as food and beverage manager at the Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna. In 2004, he moved to Summerland and worked for Sumac Ridge Estate Winery and See Ya Later Ranch until he opened his own restaurant in Summerland, the Victoria Road Deli & Bistro, in June 2008.

 Road 13

For 6 years we’ve been interviewing Mick and Pam Luckhurst – The owners of Road 13.

Now comes the NEXT generation – Joe Luckhurst

The younger of the two Luckhurst sons, Joe, has been involved in Road 13 from Vancouver for several years. In 2012 Joe left Vancouver to throw himself into the everyday operations of the family business and early in 2014 he took the helm as General Manager. With a work ethic that is oddly familiar to the rest of the team at Road 13, he seems to have fully embraced Mick’s adage, “owners don’t need days off.”

Joe is an actor!

Perfect for  the wine business.

Paul Cicconi – Brodo Penticton

“Chef Paul” is a graduate of the Vancouver Community College Culinary Arts Program and holds an advanced certificate from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. Before diving in with BRODO, he spent time in the kitchens of The Beach House at Dundarave Pier in West Vancouver, The Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, the Regent at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney, Australia, and most recently was the Executive Chef  at Local Lounge * Grille in Summerland, BC.

What a great chef..

Enters Stone Soup Kitchen competition in Kelowna. Wins it.

Enters Chowder competition in Vancouver. Wins it.

The guy has a gift for tasty simple food.

Wonderful person.

Opened in May 2013, BRODO (Italian for “broth”) features locally-sourced ingredients in a variety of soups, sandwiches and salads, and the menu changes seasonally to reflect what’s fresh from the harvest. Unique to Penticton, the “flight of soups” has been a hit since opening — three soups to tempt taste buds, paired with a salad or sandwich.

BRODO’s service is fresh and fast, true to Chef Paul Cecconi’s motto: simply fresh food.    [divider]  Big Bad Bill Eggert – Fairview Cellars

FairviewCellarsWineShop

Fairview Cellars is the culmination of a lifelong quest of Bill Eggert’s to own and operate his own winery.

The 10 acre property located adjacent to the first green of the Fairview Mountain Golf Course was purchased by Bill in 1989.  The vineyard was started in 1993. The high opinionated Mr Eggert also happens to be one of the very best winemakers in Canada.

Half the property was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon.  Cabernet Franc and Merlot were planted in equal parts to fill out the property.  One row of Syrah and one row of Petit Verdot were added later, and Sauvignon Blanc was planted on a lower terraced bench close to the first green in 2007.

If you happen to PLAY the first hole and go out of bounds..DO NOT attempt to retrieve your ball off Bill’s property.  I beg you.

Not surprisingly, Dick’s Phantom Creek Vineyard was recently named one of the “Top 10 Single Vineyards Around the World” by Wine Access Magazine.

His other wine partner is Harry McWatters.

No contracts here. Just handshakes.

With over 30 years of grape growing experience, Richard Cleave is one of the most respected growers in the Okanagan.

A true pioneer in the BC wine industry, Richard’s goal is to grow the fruit used to make the most acclaimed wine in Canada.

We talk about Black Sage Road, Cellared in Canada BS and truth in labeling. We also talk to Howard Soon from Sandhill.

And one clever  trouble maker who knows his wines. John Clerides from Marquis Wine Cellars.

THE SHOW

John Clerides is the team leader behind Marquis Wine Cellars on Davie in Vancouver. One great wine destination.

He really knows his wines..and makes no bones about telling winemakers when their wines are less than stellar.

John also is committed to hold the  bureaucrats  and provincial politicians accountable for the odious state of our liquor regulations and embarrassing tax grabs.

This is just part of a 30 minute rant we recorded at the new home of TRR,  Roundhouse Radio which is  coming to Vancouver airwaves in  early September.

We’ll be on air  Saturday mornings at 10am. 98.3 FM.

SingleTree Wines – Fraser Valley

In the late 1800s, the Singletree, the single harness yoke, was an essential tool for pioneering farmers. It allowed those who saw the potential of the Mt. Lehman area to use horses to clear the land, and make way for farming; no easy feat.

The Etsell family identifies with these early farmers, and while they have access to modern amenities, they are proud to carry on the tradition of working the land with their family. After gaining vast experience growing produce and operating a thriving turkey farm, Garnet and Debbie Etsell have now ventured into BC’s exciting wine industry with Singletree Winery. Along with their son Andrew.

You are invited to visit Singletree, taste, and take in the sights and flavours of Fraser Valley wine country.

We welcome Garnet and Andrew Etsell

Mulligan Stew August 8th 2015- Live at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival

hello

edmonton
Today at 5PM…Mulligan Stew is LIVE at the edmonton folk festival..
5-7PM Mountain time. 4-6 Pacific. Streaming live click here: LISTEN LIVE!Screen Shot 2015-08-08 at 9.46.38 AM

Right at 5pm its one of the hottest emerging acts anywhere.
2 nights ago Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats earned and received a standing ovation from the Jimmy Fallon studio audience..for their killer single SOB. (check out the video)

5 years ago Daniel would have shown up as a solo act in edmonton..just a guy, a guitar and his songs.
Now he brings a serious R&B band..with horns, B3 organ and tunes you’d swear came from the golden days of Stax.
Best of all, they kick off the show..right at 5PM.  Don’t miss these guys..
530 brings  the pride of New Brunswick Matt Anderson.
Matt brings the whole package..A voice that can switch from a whisper to a growl.  Complete mastery of his guitar and ever improving songs..the latest from his best LP ever – Weightless.
It seems he’s never not on the road but one of the highlights of his year is playing this festival in Edmonton. Not bad for a guy who has stubby fingers…

Theres a really fine story by Tom Murray in todays Edmonton Journal that details the difficult formative years of EFMF. How they almost went under 30 years ago and how a band of dedicated volunteers and music types pulled together to keep it alive..
They included Holger Petersen & Tom Coxworth from CKUA. Then along came Terry Wickham.who took over leadership and he/they began to build the outstanding event we enjoy today.
Terry Wickham guests right at 6PM.  He brings the stories with him.
630 brings Danny Michel…who, after moving to Belize and recording with local musicians released an amazing album called BlackBirds are dancing over me.
It received so many plays on so many shows that it was declared the album of the year on the CKUA Top 100.
We’re going to talk to him about his latest project – the smaller calmer School Night Mondays at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto. and jamming with astronaut Chris Hadfield.

and then two highlights from last years Festival.
Daniel Lanois and Dan Mangan and Blacksmith

Enjoy!!  tdm

August 8th, 2015 – Exclusive interview with Russell Crowe!

hello

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner B

An exclusive interview with Russell Crowe who stars in and  directs his first feature film  The Water Diviner, opening this weekend !

Mike Bernardo goes full Beastie Boy with his Mike B Reisling!

Okanagan Falls pours in Vancouver..looking for profile and making new friends! We talk to 6 wineries.

And the return of The Napa Wine making Gunslinger Cameron Hughes.

THE SHOW

Mike Bernardo – Sommelier of the Year

Mike Bernardo - maker of Mike b Riesling

Mike Bernardo – maker of Mike b Riesling

Somebody has to open for Russell Crowe and we think there’s no one better than Mike Bernardo – Sommelier of the Year and maker of Mike b Riesling.

Mike Bernardo fell in love with wine in 1997, working at the five star hotel, the Balmoral, followed by The Atrium, in Edinburgh, Scotland. After returning to Canada he worked at Dock 503 on Vancouver Island as Manager / Sommelier. In January 2001 Mike joined Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala at Vij’s restaurant in Vancouver, where he worked with them to later open Rangoli, the Vij’s production facility for their line of packaged curries (Vij’s Inspired Indian Cuisine), as well as the Vij’s food truck.

Mike’s is currently Director of Operations and Wine Director for the Vij’s Companies. He has lead the Vij’s wine program to win several awards, including the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator and Gold Prize for best wine list from Vancouver Magazine. Mike was responsible for all the wine pairings in “Vij’s: Elegant and Inspired Indian Cuisine”, which won the 2007 Cuisine Canada’s Gold Award for Cookbook of the year. Mike also collaborated on the wine notes for “Vij’s at Home-Relax, Honey”, which won silver for best Indian Cookbook at the World Gourmand Cookbook Awards in Paris, France. In 2014, Mike won The Vancouver International Wine Festival and the Vancouver Magazine’s Sommelier of the Year awards.

In 2014, Mike opened his own restaurant called Sutra, in conjunction with Vij’s, in Victoria, BC. He now splits his time between Vij’s restaurants in Vancouver and Sutra in Victoria.

The Winner of said award is given the very special opportunity to make his/her own wine in partnership with Okanagan Crush Pad.

Mike decided to make a BC Riesling that would not only handle Vij’s half dozen spices in most dishes but would pair beautifully to make the meals even better.

He named the label Mike B in tribute to his favourite band – The Beastie Boys.

Russell Crowe – Actor. Director. Singer/Songwriter and Dad!

When I read that Russell was directing his first ever film I just knew I had to see if I could find him. Find him I did.

Was I Pushy. You bet. But I knew a little something about the man. He has a very big heart and values friendships.

I had the pleasure of being a cast member of Mystery Alaska when it shot years ago in Canmore Alberta.

Russell took me for a beer and included me in the cast and crew gatherings.

Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe

I found him in Chicago surrounded by police sirens and morning coffees.

This film is very special to him. The Water Diviner is part of Australian history…all those soldiers who were sent to invade Turkey at Gallipoli exactly 100 years ago.

Many many men died on both sides..and that’s the story that Russell tells in The Water Diviner. Lead by the tale of a Farmer  looking for his three sons who reportedly were all killed on the battlefield the same day. The film opens April 24th in Canada.

We also talk about his new music group in partnership with Allan Doyle and a couple of wine questions..like how come with acres and acres of farm land, he isn’t making wines.

Please join us for this exclusive phone conversation with Russell Crowe.  Enjoy the film.

Okanagan Falls Wineries pour in Vancouver.

Okanagan Falls

Every year BC’s various wine regions come into Vancouver  and pour with pride their new releases.

For the food and wine industry it’s a chance to stay in touch with the Okanagan and Vancouver Island, renewing friendships and checking out the wines.

For years, Okanagan Falls situated between Penticton and Oliver was the place you stopped for ice cream but not wine.

They’re trying to change all that by making better and better wines.

Adding food and restaurants to their wineries.

Vicksburg Call is Gogo’s fourteenth release and is poised to add even more acclaim to his already impressive inventory. Undoubtedly a rockin’ blues album, it was recorded at Rick Salt’s brand new studio in Gogo’s hometown of Nanaimo, British Columbia. Gogo has recorded several albums with Salt, and the new studio has a live, intimate atmosphere, which yielded an overall grittier sound with lots of feeling. The new album also has more of a “band feel” to it than previous albums, making the songs feel more like the live show. Additionally, Gogo was inspired to make use of a wider range of guitars from his extensive collection and experimented with his newly acquired Gibson Les Paul and a Martin D 35 that had him playing and writing outside of his usual approach.
Out September 4th. Pre-order August 14th.

It’s the kind of gathering you would expect in Vancouver but to see this kind of passion for our oceans in land locked Alberta is remarkable.
