Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew August 24th 2019-60’s and 70’s tracks

hello

The “plan” was to connect with today’s donor Toby and see what his favorite artist was.
Tony had other plans.
Please play tracks from the 60’s and 70’s.
I loved the idea. They were some of the very best years in all of popular music.
Of course I got carried away.
Hour one has new Robbie Robertson,  Small Glories, Shari Ulrich Sting, Terra Lightfoot.
Back to back
Stones, Tower of Power, ZZ Top, Keb Mo and Rosanne Cash.
Then comes Hour Two.
A wicked mix of 60’s and 70’s.
The Band
Dusty
Otis
Van
Beatles
Smokey
Dylan
Springfield
Bowie
Sam Cooke.

Enjoy!!!

Mulligan Stew August 17th 2019-The Bros Landreth Interview-dedicated to Monica Miller

hello

This show is dedicated to Monica Miller – fellow CKUA show host.

The Bros Landreth guest on today’s Stew.

We find them at the Bear Creek Festival co-headlining the first of two nights there.

FYI – Those 2 nights are the only Canadian dates for The Bros this year. They are the rest of this year to be road warriors in the USA, the UK, CKUAand Europe.  (Next year, they’ll be back in Canada with a vengeance)

David and his younger brother Joey come from an amazing musical background.

Father Wally was a serious musician in Winnipeg. The house was loaded with instruments and lots of music.

Naturally, the boys picked up guitars and listened to Ry Cooder, Little Feat, all the greats.

That’s why their music has so much soul and depth. Very few bands have had this kind of schooling or were open to it.

And that’s why I believe The Bros. Landreth will be loved all over the World.

They already have the most bizarre profile in the UK  and Europe.  How does a band from Winnipeg get to play in Norway or Sweden or Liverpool?

The Bros Landreth also have an ace-in-the-hole.

It’s Joey and his solo career. Boom. Through the roof. His current album Hindsight has fans jumping on the bandwagon.

After Bear Creek, the brothers are headed for the Americana Festival in Nashville. If anyone can steal a show its these guys.

As for the rest of  The Stew …

Van Morrison

Mulligan Stew Aug 3rd 2019- David Hood and Leland Sklar Interview

hello

When you think about certain classic hits or artists

I never loved a man- Aretha

I’ll take you there – Staple Singers

Brown Sugar – Stones

Wilson Pickett – Mustang Sally

Paul Simon – Still Crazy

Etta James – Tell mama

When a man loves a woman – Percy Sledge

You think of the bass player at Muscle Shoals – David Hood

Or When you hear  James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, Phil Collins, Lyle Lovett,  Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, Leonard Cohen and CSN and Youngyou think of that bass player – Leland Sklar.  Long white hair and beard.

They’ve never met or been interviewed together.  Until this Saturdays Stew.

Terry found both at the Vancouver Island Music Festival and turned complete fanboy.

Things they talked about

Difference between music’s crazy drummers and bass players.

“we’re the guys who hold the band together..even if the people around us don’t even know we do it.”  David

“we’re the glue.  The liaison between the melodic and rhythmic.”  Leland

Both talked about “how one bass note can change the character in a hit”

Both talked about Muscle Shoals, Booker T and Stax, The Wrecking Crew and the LA session cats.

Leland says of David  “David developed a style of music that defined a locale”

David says  “It’s not just me it’s the rest of the Muscle Shoals guys.  I just keep it simple”

Leland adds “ what’s the least I can do to make this work”

Leland describes being in the studio and putting on his headphones..what he hears is “Barbara Streisand singing in his ears with a full orchestra.”

And most interesting we ended up talking about Miles Davis and –  “the space between the notes”

Mulligan Stew June29th 2019- Canada Day Weekend and Jim Cuddy Interview

hello

July 1st is Canada Day…

I don’t think it influenced the first hour of The Stew because I had planned
to pay tribute to a lost friend..the Bard of the  Boards…Kelly J/Blake
Fordham.

Leader of Crowbar, one of Canada’s grandest bands.

When all others were wimping out behind Tony Orlando and Dawn/Osmond  wanna
be’s, bands like Crowbar carried the flag of rock and roll.

All passion and grit..belief in the mission they were on.

And at the head of the parade was Kelly J…Captain Canada.  All Fire and no
brake.

Great chops as a lead singer but World Class as a boogie piano player.

Well, the fire finally burned itself out. What we are left with is memories
and his music.

So we play the music..a remember the man.

First, four tracks go

Crowbar with King Biscuit Boy

Then King Biscuit Boy with Crowbar

The Band

And the band Crowbar would open for at Fillmore East Joe Cocker.  Mad Dogs
and Englishmen.

There’s 2 of the greatest voices…Aaron Neville and Mavis Staples – singing
together.

Avett Bros

John Fogerty

John Prine

Norah Jones

Funky Nassau

Jimmy Vaughn

The second hour of the show is all Canadian…

Starting with an Interview with Jim Cuddy who, with the Cuddy Band, just
released their 5th album Countrywide Soul.

Recorded in just 3 days in Jim’s barn in southern Ontario.

Only the very best musicians can create this magic.

Some of the songs are Jim’s from previous Cuddy Band albums and Blue Rodeo
as well.

He didn’t re-record them to claim ownership. He did it because he felt they
were different songs now. They needed a different shape and texture.

8 of the songs are Jim’s

2 cover from George Jones and Glen Campbell (Rhinestone Cowboy)

And two new songs were written for the album.

Life is crazy busy for Jim Cuddy.  He’s playing dates with the Cuddy band
and at the same time hitting the road for a very busy Summer with Blue
Rodeo.

Some songs like  Everybody Cries are unchanged  but they’re deeper and more
meaningful.

Some have quietly transformed such as All in Time. It used to rock like a
truck. Now it glides like an Air Stream.

Just like the guy who wrote the song.

The Canada Day Stew finishes with an all Canadian line-up

Leeroy Stagger

Colin James

Whitehorse

Serena Ryder

Dan Mangan

Then – the finish…

Two outstanding tracks. Two outstanding moments in music history.

First The Last Waltz at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco
Thanksgiving 1976.  I was there.

There came a moment when this all-star American spectacle was taken over by
The Canadians.

Four of the 5 Band members were proudly  Canadian

Neil Young sang

Joni Mitchell sang..then they all sand together on the one song  they
identified with – Acadian Driftwood

Goosebumps my friends.

We finish The Stew on another stage – The Commodore Ballroom. Almost  2
years ago

A concert honoring John Mann of Spirit of the West. John was fighting
Alzheimer’s

Happy Dominion Day  – enjoy every minute

Mulligan Stew June 22nd 2019- Ewan Currie Interview

hello

There’s a Sheepdog in The House!!

His name is Ewan Currie and he’s the lead singer and principal songwriter of
Saskatoon’s Sheepdogs.

In 2011 they were the first unsigned band to appear on the cover of Rolling
Stone Magazine. They outplayed and outlasted 15 other bands/artists to walk
away with one of the biggest breaks any new band could have imagined.

According to Ewan it’s been a blur every since.

This very year, The Sheepdogs have played over 70 shows.  It’s June. There’s
a whole Summer to go and The Fall.

These guys are the Rock version of the Energizer Bunny.

The Sheepdogs play the Calgary Stampede July 7th at the Big 4 Roadhouse.
With Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Corb Lund, The Sadies, and Whitney Rose.

Ewan Also brings with him new music from his latest solo album Out of my
Mind.

As for the other 90 minutes of The Stew  these are all  LIVE tracks

We kick off with Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton and Howlin Wolf’s Forty
Four.

Van Morrison – Twice

Tom Waits.

There are several sets I’m really liking..hope you do to.

Throw is Leeroy Stagger and The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer and it’s
