Mulligan Stew July1st 2023 – Remembering The original rock DJ Red Robinson (Hall of Fame) and Canadian donors in Texas

hello

Red Robinson died this year.  A sell-out crowd of fans and many friends filled The Commodore Ballroom to remember the man who singlehandedly brought rock and roll to Canadian airwaves. Millions of listeners truly loved him in and around Vancouver and  Red was directly responsible for the first wild formative years of rock on radio North of the Border.
Red also introduced black artists to a generation who had never heard of them.
Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Red was directing traffic at the Rock Crossroads.
He was recognized for his place in music history by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. (also called and hired me on the prairies and brought me back to Vancouver. Red changed my life.)
In the last two years of Red’s life, I decided to ask my friend to sit down on Zoom and allow me to ask questions about the artists he met and became friends with and the lives he changed in his audience.
Just think about it …Red got to interview and introduce
  • Elvis Presley
  • Roy Orbison
  • Fats Domino
  • Little Richard
  • Jerry Lee Lewis
  • Everly Brothers
  • Chuck Berry
  • Johnny Cash
  • Bill Haley
  • Buddy Holly
  • Ray Charles
  • Sam Cooke
  • Bo Diddley
  • James Brown
  • The Beatles
I interviewed him twice… March 2022 and October 2022.
I felt the first one was not his or my best and thus the follow-up.
Those were the last two interviews he did.
That’s Hour Two of The Stew – Hour One as donor-driven suggestions and requests. Connect Canadian artists who toured and recorded in the USA and American artists who chose to play live and record in Canada.  Plus we play the best of us
Joni. Neil. The Band. As many as we can fit in.

Mulligan Stew June 3rd 2023 – Special Guest Bob Rock on Gord Downie and their new album ‘Lustre Parfait’

hello

Two Canadian icons join forces and become partners in music.

One is/was Gord Downie. Lead singer and songwriter of The Tragically Hip.

Truly beloved. And hugely missed after losing his fight to cancer but going out in a blaze of the song with The Hip and the last Cross Canada Tour.

The other is Bob Rock. Known for his production work with Metallica, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Ron Sexsmith and The Tragically Hip.

Bob tells the story of how they became friends and how Gord contacted him and asked if he had any tracks he hadn’t used because he had  words he hadn’t used..” so let’s put them together”

The album took years to complete but when they last met. Gord says to Bob “Please finish it”

Bob Rock on Gord Downie and their album Lustre Parfait Saturday on Mulligan Stew.

Mulligan Stew May 27th-It’s Festival Season – Here’s 5 reasons to celebrate!!

hello

Five interview guests. All Artistic Directors of their festivals.

They spend a year preparing their festivals so we can sit on a hillside, drink Slurpees, inhale a burrito, and have world-class music wash over us.

Four of them are in a group discussion about surviving the Covid years, this year’s artist lineups, and celebrating the renewal of live music. The fifth guest in hour one is the artistic director of The Edmonton Folk Fest,  Terry Wickham.

Fiona Black –  Vancouver Folk Music Festival (July 14-16) Thefestival.bc.ca

Chris Frayer –  Winnipeg Folk Fest. (July 6-9) Winnipegfolkfestival.ca

Sue Panning – Canmore Folk Festival (Aug 5-7) Canmorefolkfestival.com

Kerry Clarke – Calgary Folk Fest (July 27-30)  Calgaryfolkfest.com

Terry Wickham – Edmonton Folk Fest (Aug 10-13) Edmontonfolkfest.org

We’ll find out how Vancouver Folk survived a near collapse of their festival.

How they all worked together, as a community, to support one another.

Also, their talent lineup and who they think could steal the show.

The Complete discussion on Mulligan Stew Podcast and TerrydavidMulligan YouTube Channel.

Thanks all

Mulligan Stew May 13th 2023-Special Guest, Paul Janeway – leader of  St Paul and the Broken Bones.

hello

Can a 3-year-old change the direction of a band?

This week the return of the force known as Paul Janeway – leader of  St Paul and the Broken Bones. (checking in from Birmingham Alabama.)

We’re going to be talking about their latest album Angels in Science Fiction

Paul tells us it’s a turning point for the band after 10 years together.

Even though the core members are mostly unchanged,  this is not the soul band that swept over all of music in 2012 with the EP Greetings from St Paul and the Broken Bones.

Now 5 albums later they’re taking their fans in another more introspective direction., The funk and groove can still be found but now Paul is writing and singing about being a father and his conversation with his wife about

“do what kind of  world are we bringing our daughter into?” They had a daughter.

Songs with lyrics like

Dust to Dust”

“Try your best to make a difference. Starting with the people around you”

Songs about denial, fear, and acceptance.

There’s a renewed sense of spirituality throughout the album.

One question I wanted to include was

“How will these songs mesh live with the horn/soul band songs that you were playing over the past 10 years”.

Lots of stories and discussions.

Two things – they play the Saskatoon Jazz Festival July 8

And the Calgary Stampede July 9

AND

Her name is Marigold.

Mulligan Stew May 6th 2023- Very special Guest Bruce Cockburn – On Gord and New Album

hello

It took Two Zoom Calls to create the feature interview with Bruce Cockburn

The first was May 1 late afternoon. Talk with Bruce about his latest album

O Sun O Moon.

Brilliant songwriting, playing, and singing.

We hung up and got on with our days.

Then the World heard that Canada’s voice,  Gordon Lightfoot has passed away.

A call to Bernie Finklesteen – Bruce’s long-time manager, put us back in touch on May 2 and we had an engaging conversation about the Gord/Bruce relationship and Gord’s place in the world of music.

Played Bruce’s version of Gord’s Ribbon of Darkness.

I’ve put both interviews into hour two of The Stew.

Bruce Cockburn finishes with a nice reach out to the CKUA audience, reminding them there are very few stations as creative as  CKUA and it needs your support.

Both hours of The Stew contain promised tracks from the last fundraiser.

The complete Cockburn interview can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and seen on the tdm YouTube Channel
